Dear Sir or Madam,
I write regarding the position of language school receptionist advertised in last week’s edition of Language School Receptionists Weekly. I am a former steamboat engineer currently unemployed as a result of the recent invention of the diesel engine; hence my applying for this job.
As my work has required extensive travel between the continents, I am well acquainted with a number of cultures and their respective languages. To name but a few, I am fluent in German, Japanese, Esperanto and, of course, English; you will find a complete list of the languages I speak in the enclosed curriculum vitae, in which I also helpfully provide a summary of relevant personal qualities.
Furthermore, through my interactions with the crews of various ships, I have developed extraordinary social skills. Among my friends, I am noted for my ability to handle topics of conversation of great diversity, ranging from the craft of steamboat engineering to the proper care and handling of steamboats - a skill that will surely prove useful.
In addition to the curriculum vitae, you will find enclosed a written character reference from my former colleague Jules Wells. Although he has since passed away due to lead poisoning, and is therefore currently unavailable for contact, I believe his letter will satisfactorily prove that he would have vouched for my suitability for the job, had he still been alive.
I will be available for interview at virtually any time, seeing as I am unemployed and do not engage in recreation.
Yours faithfully,
Herbert G. Verne
