HG/SS My Team... help/critique wanted

Chief Zackrai

pingpong wixard
Is it weird to post two threads in the same section on the same day? Sorry if it is.

I've got a team I'm working on for Hg/Ss.

Clefablew/ flame plate A:Magic Guard
Magical Leaf
Meteor Mash
Flamethrower
Fire Blast

Don't ask me why. It's unexpected.

Kabutopsw/ expert belt A: Battle Armor
Stone Edge
Slash
Surf
X-Scissor

Just a full-aggro beast. Surf is a good, strong move, okay?

Dragonitew/ leftovers A: Inner Focus
Draco Meteor
Fly
Dragon Claw
Substitute

Not sure with this one, except for the fact that it is Dragonite. Substitute's there for show. Fly, It's the strongest physical flying type move I could find that Dragonite can legitimately learn.

Amparos w/Lax Incense A: Static
Power Gem
Thunder
Discharge
Signal Beam

It's an electric type with move type variations. Rock and Bug are decent types.

Breloomw/ toxic orb A: Poison Heal
Swords Dance
Sky Uppercut
Seed Bomb
Thunderpunch

That last move is kind of random, but effective. Breloom is a beast. with the ability poison heal, the toxic orb is a great thing.

Gliscorw/ bright powder A: Hyper Cutter
Guillotine
Earthquake
Stone Edge
Sky Attack

Come on. A Gliscor that knows two 100 power moves, one 140 power move, and a one-hit KO move. What else can I say?

thanks for the help in advance!

Don't have time for a full rate, so I'll just give a few suggestions for each pokemon.

Clefablew/ flame plate
Magical Leaf
Meteor Mash
Flamethrower
Fire Blast

Don't ask me why. It's unexpected.

You'd much rather have Life Orb here. It gives more damage boost, and it doesn't hurt you thanks to Magic Guard. Unless you have Cute Charm. In which case go get a Clefable with Magic Guard.

Kabutopsw/ expert belt
Stone Edge
Slash
Surf
X-Scissor

Just a full-aggro beast. Surf is a good, strong move, okay?

Surf is a good, strong move, but not on Kabutops. He has a base 115 Attack, compared to a 65 Sp.Atk. Waterfall is immeasurably better. And Slash isn't really that good, considering it gets you no additional type coverage. Put Rain Dance, or something like that. Aqua Jet works too.

Dragonitew/ leftovers
Draco Meteor
Fly
Dragon Claw
Substitute

Not sure with this one, except for the fact that it is Dragonite. Substitute's there for show. Fly, It's the strongest physical flying type move I could find that Dragonite can legitimately learn.

Well, if Fly is the best it gets in the Flying-type department, wouldn't it make more sense to use something that NOT flying type? Fire Blast and Flamethrower are both more powerful, even with STAB. Also, if you really want a Flying type attack, Aerial Ace is better, it takes one turn for 60 BP, compared to Fly's 2turn 90BP.

Amparos w/Lax Incense
Power Gem
Thunder
Discharge
Signal Beam

It's an electric type with move type variations. Rock and Bug are decent types.

Why both Thunder AND Discharge?

Breloomw/ toxic orb
Swords Dance
Sky Uppercut
Seed Bomb
Thunderpunch

That last move is kind of random, but effective. Breloom is a beast. with the ability poison heal, the toxic orb is a great thing.

Ehh, nothing wrong here.

Gliscorw/ bright powder
Guillotine
Earthquake
Stone Edge
Sky Attack

Come on. A Gliscor that knows two 100 power moves, one 140 power move, and a one-hit KO move. What else can I say?

Ewww OHKO moves. If this is truly a competitve team, then I'd remove the OHKO. Most people ban them. Replace it with something like Roost. Sky Attack is a horrible move, simply because of the charging turn. Once the opponent sees you charging Sky Attack, they can simply switch in something that resists it. Either Swords Dance or U-turn could go in its place.

I was going with magic guard for the Clefable, anyway. That's an interesting combo.

With Kabutops, waterfall is actually a good, unpredicted alternative. I know that Slash doesn't get me to many places. I was going with battle armor on him, so Rain Dance won't do much. Maybe I could teach him Aqua Tail or Brick Break.

Dragonite, I thought about aerial ace. I won't go with a fire-type moves because that's the point of Clefable.

Ampharos, yes thunder and discharge, because discharge hits more often, but thunder is for more of the big bad water/ flying types if applicable. And besides, am I supposed to run an Ampharos that knows only one offensive electric-type attack?

I really like breloom.

Gliscor: He's more of an aggro freinds battle pokemon with that moveset. I haven't been on WI-FI in the first place, so I wouldn't know about the whole OHKO thing and the Sky Attacl thing. Mostly he knows Sky Attack because I've never had a Pokemon who can use it before. he has more defence, so perhaps Swords Dance for Guillotine and maybe Steel Wing or Ice Fang for Sky Attack.

really? I would have thought differently. But like I said, I have never been on WI-FI, so I wouldn't know. Would you recommend discharge over thunder or vice-verse?

EDIT!: Also, I forgot to put the abilities of my pokemon before... so this edit is practically pointless... I'll go do that now.

Umm... that's kind of random, but it works. any suggestions as to the new move for Ampharos (from here on whom shall be referred to as Trevor) and then my Kabutops as well? can't decide.

thunderdance? that doesn't make any sense. And like I said, any suggestions with the last move for Trevor and my Kabutops?

Thunderdance refers to combining thunder with rain dance, giving thunder 100% accuracy. Seeing as the rest of your team doesn't really benefit from rain dance (especially if kabutops doesn't have swift swim), you're better off not wasting a spot on it. Replace one of the two electric moves with thunderbolt; you could try focus blast to replace the other one (as your ampharos has little way to deal with ground-types should it be stuck against one, and a lot of them are also rock-type anyway), or you could try a non-offensive move like magnet rise or something.

Also, waterfall on kabutops is about as predictable as it gets, precisely because it works so well. If you aren't battling competitively then I guess your friends might not see it coming, though.

I pieced that together like right after I shut down my computer. I had thought about magnet rise before. Something that is occurring to me now is that if I am stuck using my Ampharos to battle ground-types, it might be better if he knows magnet rise, and if I get rid of power gem, seeing as though two of my other pokemon know Stone edge, and teach it something else offensive of a different type, like focus blast, or iron tail. Focus Blast being preferred because of Ampharos' higher Sp.Attack stat.

Kabutops with waterfall might be predictable, but isn't Dragonite with Draco Meteor also just as predictable? I suppose I could use Aqua Tail, but it is both less accurate than Waterfall, and can be used less times. Similar thing with Aqua Jet. It can be used more times, but it is so much weaker. Other than that, we have brine, with its 40 power and less PP, Water Pulse and Surf, which are S.Attacks, Dive, which is a two-turn and can be used less, and rain dance, which has no power. Those are all of the Water-type moves that a Kabutops can learn. What Water-type move do you suggest I use? Waterfall is the best choice by what I see.

EDIT!: Maybe Gliscor isn't right for this team... perhaps

Mamoswinew/ Icy Rock A: Snow cloak
Hail
Earthquake
StoneEdge
Blizzard

The last move might be better if it were ice fang. What do you think?

Last edited:
i thought so. Why else would Red have three pokemon that know it in HG/SS?

EDIT!: OR, (and this just occurred to me) I could run a
NidokingW/ Muscle Band A: Poison Point
Sludge Bomb
Earthquake
Stone Edge
Megahorn/Ice Beam

I like the Idea of that.

Clefablew/ flame plate A:Magic Guard
Magical Leaf

life orb. maybe replace one of your fire moves with softboiled. use return, probably over magical leaf - it's a solid base 102 move with STAB.

Don't ask me why. It's unexpected.

not exactly the best reason, but fair enough.

Kabutopsw/ expert belt A: Battle Armor
Stone Edge
Slash
Surf
X-Scissor

Just a full-aggro beast. Surf is a good, strong move, okay?

waterfall is better on tops. replace slash with return if you nee the normal/water coverage - 32 extra bp is much better than a measly 1/8 extra crit chance. x-scissor gets no extra coverage; better replace with swords dance, or rain dance if you can get exchange for swift swim.

Dragonitew/ leftovers A: Inner Focus
Draco Meteor
Fly
Dragon Claw
Substitute

Not sure with this one, except for the fact that it is Dragonite. Substitute's there for show. Fly, It's the strongest physical flying type move I could find that Dragonite can legitimately learn.

definitely try to get one with extremespeed and superpower over substitute and fly. STAB flying is mediocre at best. non-bulky dragonite without extremespeed or superpower is outclassed by salamence.

Amparos w/Lax Incense A: Static
Power Gem
Thunder
Discharge
Signal Beam

It's an electric type with move type variations. Rock and Bug are decent types.

lax incense is often banned, and two electric moves are a bad idea. dump thunder for focus blast if you don't mind the inaccuracy; thunderbolt is typically better than dischage, but sometimes the paralysis helps.

Breloomw/ toxic orb A: Poison Heal
Swords Dance
Sky Uppercut
Seed Bomb
Thunderpunch

That last move is kind of random, but effective. Breloom is a beast. with the ability poison heal, the toxic orb is a great thing.

you can dump it for spore, but this should be fine.

Gliscorw/ bright powder A: Hyper Cutter
Guillotine
Earthquake
Stone Edge
Sky Attack

sky attack is painfully bad. guillotine is painfully bad.

Come on. A Gliscor that knows two 100 power moves, one 140 power move, and a one-hit KO move. What else can I say?

100 power moves are fine. sky attack is 140 power over two moves, when you can still be attacked. free switch into resistor.

thanks for the help in advance!

want natures and EVs.

did you not look at the other options I gave for my team? I'm not too big on the whole Gliscor thing anymore. I also gave the option of

Mamoswine w/ icy rock A: Snow Cloak
Earthquake
Stone Edge
Hail
Blizzard

or

Nidoking w/ Muscle Band A: Poison Point
Earthquake
Stone Edge
Sludge Bomb
Megahorn/ Ice Beam (but probably Ice Beam)

Also, how would you get a Dragonite with extremespeed?

X-scissor is on Kabutops for those nasty psychic-types, and also the occasional dark-type that isn't Drapion or Skunktank. Same thing with Signal Beam on Ampharos.

I'm not going to get rid of any of Clefable's moves, because it's my main fire-type pokemon (that's is why it's unexpected) and my backup grass for Breloom, because he is a good fighting-type, but more of a sub-par grass type in my opinion. Mostly because he has below average Sp.Attack, which is most grass-type moves.

Also, did you read any of the other posts? I was going to go thunderbolt-focus blast-power gem-signal beam on my Ampharos (yes, it's not stated out right, but it is kind of implied).

For those who care, I chose Brick Break for Kabutop's last move.

I want my Dragonite to know a flying-type move. Aerial Ace stays. I'm flexible on Substitute, however.

I'd have to choose the natures, and I do not know how to get the EVs. also, seeing as some of those pokemon don't even exist yet, I can't really give them to you in the first place.

Mamoswine w/ icy rock A: Snow Cloak
Earthquake
Stone Edge
Hail
Blizzard

nobody should ever be using hail or sandstorm. put ice shard, superpower, and life orb or something. also, you don't need edgequake if you use ice/ground.

Nidoking w/ Muscle Band A: Poison Point
Earthquake
Stone Edge
Sludge Bomb
Megahorn/ Ice Beam (but probably Ice Beam)

earth power/ice beam gets nearly-perfect coverage. drop sludge bomb; use earth power if you want special STAB, or thunderbolt. ice beam > megahorn.

Also, how would you get a Dragonite with extremespeed?

hgss dratini, or breed in hgss. hey, you said hgss.

X-scissor is on Kabutops for those nasty psychic-types, and also the occasional dark-type that isn't Drapion or Skunktank. Same thing with Signal Beam on Ampharos.

kabutops will destroy psychics and darks with waterfall anyway, because they generally have relatively poor defenses. ampharos can use it, I guess, but psychics and darks are kind of rare anyway; but focus blast covers darks, and electric/fighting is great coverage.

I'm not going to get rid of any of Clefable's moves, because it's my main fire-type pokemon (that's is why it's unexpected) and my backup grass for Breloom, because he is a good fighting-type, but more of a sub-par grass type in my opinion. Mostly because he has below average Sp.Attack, which is most grass-type moves.

grass type moves are mostly supports which just needs speed or bulk. neither of which breloom has, but eh. clefable does not need two moves of the same type.

Also, did you read any of the other posts? I was going to go thunderbolt-focus blast-power gem-signal beam on my Ampharos (yes, it's not stated out right, but it is kind of implied).

yes. and the first two obsolete the third, and mostly remove the need for the fourth. competitive battling isn't about super-effectiveness, it's about winning.

For those who care, I chose Brick Break for Kabutop's last move.

I want my Dragonite to know a flying-type move. Aerial Ace stays. I'm flexible on Substitute, however.

okay, fine.

I'd have to choose the natures, and I do not know how to get the EVs. also, seeing as some of those pokemon don't even exist yet, I can't really give them to you in the first place.

you battle stuff. that's all.

Right, but how do I check them?

You do know that Nidoking is a poison-type and a ground-type, right?

Also, I'm making these pokemon in my platinum version. And then I want to trade them to my diamond version because that's the one with all the TMs. And then I will trade them to my Heartgold.

What else would you suggest my Clefable know? As for Ampharos' other moves, I suppose I get the final decision, don't I?

I've got to go right now, but I'll edit later.

Right, but how do I check them?

... you have to keep track of them while training, unless you know the IVs beforehand.

You do know that Nidoking is a poison-type and a ground-type, right?

... that has to be one of the most insulting comments I've ever read, especially to sreservoir. Offensively, the Poison type sucks. It sucks no matter what Pokémon is using it. Even in cases of STAB, the Poison type sucks. You don't want Sludge Bomb even on Nidoking.

right, I felt that that whole post was just rude. Sorry to you, Sreservoir. It was inappropriate for me to have said that. I tend to think in an abstract way when creating movesets, and I like to include at least one move of the pokemon's type(s).

Anyway, as far as natures go, I was thinking:
Nidoking: Sassy. I'm lowering Speed, but raising Sp.Defense, which for some reason I find to be more important.
Kabutops: Adamant. He'll gain more in attack, but won't lose much in the Sp.Attack department.
Clefable: Relaxed. It's defense is lower than its Sp.Defense, and its Speed is decent enough as it is.
Dragonite: Brave. Once again, with the speed. I figured that sense its attack is already outrageously high, so why not raise it more?
Ampharos: Bold. I don't really need Attack, so I'm raisin its Defence.
Breloom: Careful. Sp.Defence is low, and Sp.Attack is almost unnecessary.
