Offscreen Activities

Nip poses as staff to get into the gala, not wanting to be involved with either side, in part due to not trusting the Mayor but not wanting to risk being associated with criminals and compromise his position. His goal is to keep an eye on things to make sure no one is out in serious danger.

Kalas has gotten some information from Corey and or Clover ( @Neirdae , @Mr.RMA ) regarding the group's consensus, or lack of, regarding how to act during the Gala.

Since he's otherwise been unfocused and lazy the last few days, he decides to sort out his thoughts and act out on his own to prepare. First, he sends Corey and Clover a message:

In this land we are uninformed guests, and at the mercy of others. If we want to wrestle any control of the situation so as to avoid discomfort or... deaths, we have to do it before the gala, where it's not fully Ignatius' turf. What do we know of Sonora's goals? Could we steal Ignatius' attention, of which we already have some, away from her?

After that, Kalas recalled how he and others in the group were offered the advice to try and get invites or "sneak in" on their own ... and ponders how much if any shop tenants like Lorenzo are invested in the gala. It is certainly "The Event" around town. He decides to ask around town who is preparing food, water and entertainment for the gala. Just in case he can sneak in that way...

Finally, the Spearow heads to the Wanderin' Zera and asks if anyone knows how to find a Cyndaquil of name Lyle.

Andre goes to the Sun Stone Saloon to find Odette, but is sidetracked by a handsome gothorita by the name of Morgan flirting with him and buying him a drink. Andre humors him, knowing that having more allies is always better, and is rewarded with an invite to the Gala as the gothorita's plus one.

[[ooc: this was coordinated with jackie and has GM approval.]]

Bellatrix fills Mhynt and Laura in on what she'd learnt about the wanted posters and justice system on the way back from the manor.

On the morning of the gala, a maus will appear in the rooms of Wes, Archie, Corey, Nip and Odette holding a letter from Bellatrix addressed to them. It says:
I have looked into several things and it appears that several things do not align, giving credence to Odette's claims. In light of this, I have reconsidered my stance on the matter and, while I will carry out Ignatius' request to act as bouncer for the Gala, I will ask that we allow for Sonora's escape. I will be able to provide a distraction if need be.
Below this are the details Bellatrix learned from her own investigations and the investigation of the manor.

Her handwriting is shockingly crude for someone with such a formal manner of speaking...

Human(-turned 'mon?) supremacy looking like (part of?) reason we were summoned. Mayor seems in on it. Son's aware of this. Either he's a great actor or he's deeply disturbed by it. "If you see a human, think of your creator, not your friends," is what he told me.
Dave reads the note, frowning. Yeah. Of course the mayor's in on it. Good to know the son's not on board, he supposes.

Professor Greenbough has an invitation but is far too busy and uninterested to attend. She gives it to Dave, and asks him to see if he can't find any investors who might want to put some capital towards her project without too many strings attached. @Butterfree
Dave wouldn't have been interested either, but... This human supremacist shit is definitely what they're here for. And while he's not exactly wild about trying to get funding for Greenbough's legitimate research from racists, he can at least use that as an excuse to approach some of them and see what he can find out by probing.

First, though, he needs to find out what constitutes formalwear in Forlas. Not going to show up there inadvertently looking like a hobo off the street. Looking at the library, he manages to surmise that in just his belt people would assume he's the plumber, and fancy talking Pokémon will wear bowties or armbands or jewelry.

Fuck it. Fine, he will be a dog in a bowtie. The universe has led him inexorably to this point. Why even try to fight it.

[[OOC: Leaving due a family emergency so I'm setting this post as a cop out as explained in chat, maybe to be replaced with proper activity at the Saloon later]]

After providing escort service for Ignatius' arrest, Kalas went to the Saloon and was surprised everyone was having ice cream. As far as he knew, this eatable was part of some sort of rite of passage for children in the human world, where they gathered around a truck machine and ate ice cream to prove they could endure the pain.

Well, if anything this was as good a time as any for Kalas to find out the truth, and so he got an ice cream and gave it a try.

"Hmmm... it doesn't seem too ba—" was all Kalas managed before his face made ugly gestures and he flopped on the table, stopped responding.

Kalas is: (BRN)FRZ!
2 turns days left.

Once Corey is well enough to be dismissed from Drungfield's, he quietly makes his way back to his room, still wearing the torn remains of what had once been a nice outfit, along with a set of bandages wrapped all around his face, and any other exposed skin that had gotten particularly burnt from the Flash Cannon. His mind has been stuck pondering the surreal incident he'd underwent while still unconscious, a part of him still questioning if the whole thing had just been one very-real-feeling dream... and if it wasn't, he can't help but wonder if this Cloud had any awareness of it... Hard to say when he could barely fathom the situation himself, but the message he'd been given nonetheless stuck in his conscience... and it's something he figures he'll have to remind himself of when faced with the inevitable threats that await in the near future.

Ch02: Offscreen Activities
In the wake of Mayor Ignatius' defeat, Laura hurries from the mayoral residence to the offices of the Gazette. She explains what just happened to Shiftry Nathaniel, who after a brief panic, is ultimately grateful that he's no longer being blackmailed by Ignatius into non-reporting of the Empoleon's shady dealings.

Laura drafts a front-pager on the night's events, and makes the decision to reveal the party's true nature to the people of Frontier Town, admitting in print to being an offworlder, and a human.

"Are you sure about this, Ms Laura? It's rather a weighty thing to put in print."
"Well, it's the truth, isn't it? I just don't think keeping it a secret will work for long, if it's even still a secret to anyone not living under a rock. Better that we put it out there when we'll get the most good will for it, than have it sprung on us at a bad time."

Sonora accepts Gerome's job offer, to be the Zera's new bouncer, pending the nullification of her warrants and the elimination of Ignatius' remaining 'prison labour' caravans.

Las Picaras' future remains uncertain.

Lucien admits his father to the town gaol, and orders that he should receive no other visitors save for his lawyer. He then goes home, dismisses the security guards, and spends a fraught couple of hours politicking the guests and massaging their bruised egos by encouraging base gossipmongering about his own father. It isn't a difficult task in terms of skill – just difficult emotionally.

He doesn't leave his room in the morning, but the mayoral staff can hear muttering and the scratch of his fountain pen.

The cloud-voice that summoned the party to Forlas soon fades, as auras settle and the connection weakens. Distracted by a thousand other matters, few heroic spirits maintain conversation with the entity long enough to hear much more than a plea to find a mystery dungeon, to strengthen the connection again.

As they fade out, they promise the party that they'll be there any time they fight alongside each other.

Despite having no idea if anyone's linked Nova to what happened at the gala, he decides to take a chance and ask around the railyard about any Commonwealth visitors Ignatius might have brought by, as well as who actually runs this railway system. Because if Ignatius was really that insistent on getting the project finished to link up with the Commonwealth, Nova figures someone (or several someones) on the other side must be with the supremacists.

(Stuff Koa has/will get up to)

Koa spends a morning doing any further research he can about the Escarpa clan, their history and ascendant legends like Wandering Light and Stormbringer; specifically if there's any clues about the Wanderings Lights mortal identity, how Stormbringer died, and what can kill a saint A thought which frightens him but he needs to know. [no need for a GM response unless its different from previous answers here, this is so I mentally know Koa is up to speed on Escarpa etc].

He also specifically asks around town and anyone he can if they've heard any legends, myths or rumors, tales etc about ascendant legends articles of their power left behind, and where.
[Wouldn't mind a GM response for this]

Koa also pokes around the various shops in search of a jacket to wear. Nothing fancy or expensive, just something familiar.

Koa spends some more time practicing his moves, and asking around town for any quadrupeds who knows a thing or two about fighting technqiues, specifically martial arts related knowledge [I don't need a gm response urgently, this is just for my own head to know that Koa is actively training in fighting, but if he does find someone thats cool]

Koa spends some time hanging out around the towns outskirts to see what the 'feral' pokemon are like. Can they be befriended or taught simple commands, do they enjoy some training/sparring, or does it just scare them off? He's curious how much they differ from pokemon back home, and see if he can befriend any.

Following the scene at Grand Station Construction Site, Ridley speaks with Odette and she catches him up with what she knows about Terminal Two and the experiments.

Prim pokes around for a job offering as a ranch hand or cattleherd. She occasionally probes the locals to find out what she can about the land of Tsainan.

[LLLONG OVERDUE offscreen post oh boy here we go]

After his scrap with Koa, Wes visits Drungfield again for more treatment for his aggravated injury and gets a scolding from her.

The next day, Wes then runs the errands for Drungfield that she requested and gets a taste of what a mystery dungeon is like. He…does not care for them and they give him a headache trying to understand how they work. 😂 However, perhaps he is able to connect with the voice again while there and can ask it a few brief questions?

In search of a more sustainable job, Wes meets Alejandro and proves his skills with mechanical tinkering. His methods aren’t the most refined, and he values efficiency over aesthetics, but his results are effective all the same.

ask around the railyard about any Commonwealth visitors Ignatius might have brought by, as well as who actually runs this railway system.

One of the visitors was, apparently, a rail tycoon and their entourage. Doesn't sound like anything special, though – just a captain of industry with typically avaricious business practices.

The railway system exists in a precarious case of state capitalism – it appears that the actual network itself is nationalised, but the service operators are generally private industrial companies. One shudders to imagine the amount of palm-greasing going on to arrange its inner workings.

research about the Escarpa clan, their history and ascendant legends like Wandering Light and Stormbringer; specifically if there's any clues about the Wanderings Lights mortal identity, how Stormbringer died, and what can kill a saint

The Wandering Light is not well-known in Frontier Town. Some seem to think it's a title of the current chieftain, others think it's another name for the Stormbringer. One of the Sanctum acolytes claims the Wandering Light used to be an Escarpa chieftain – but centuries ago. A couple random townies think Koa is asking for directions to the Wanderin' Zera.

As best as Koa can find out, the Stormbringer passed away of natural causes, and not in battle or during a great catastrophe. He doesn't know whether 'natural causes' means senescence, ill-health, or taking their own life, however.

any legends, myths or rumors, tales etc about ascendant legends articles of their power left behind, and where.

There are plenty of fairytales and children's stories about legendary pokémon bestowing magical items upon mortal 'mon, but Koa is hard-pressed to find anything that points him to real divine artefacts for the time being.

asking around town for any quadrupeds who knows a thing or two about fighting technqiues, specifically martial arts related knowledge

There aren't exactly many martial artists in town. "Fighting techniques" are the fare of bounty hunters, feral clanners, and outlaws. Or rangers, some suppose... One or two townies also mention a monastery in the Obstinea Mountains, west of the frontier, that practice what sounds to Koa like martial arts.

hanging out around the towns outskirts to see what the 'feral' pokemon are like. Can they be befriended or taught simple commands, do they enjoy some training/sparring, or does it just scare them off? He's curious how much they differ from pokemon back home, and see if he can befriend any.

This seems like it'd be worth a scene.

In the meantime, most are pretty skittish. They don't seem as cognitively sophisticated as the wild 'mon from Koa's world. Some will battle him, but it seems to be more of a territorial behaviour than he is used to – which may track to him, considering he is an Electrike rather than a human right now.

Prim pokes around for a job offering as a ranch hand or cattleherd.

It's not hard to find work as a pastoral farm hand. There are a lot of domesticated wild 'mon out in the wider frontier county.

probes the locals to find out what she can about the land of Tsainan.

Tsainan is, apparently, a distant land across the western ocean full of unheard-of luxuries, impenetrable foreign etiquette, supernaturally potent martial traditions, and exotic foods. It is, also, full of desperado mercenaries and impoverished immigrants coming to Luctemar in droves to make a life for themselves. It is unclear whether Tsainan is a single imperial state, or if it has a more complex political makeup, but it is said to have been ruled since ancient times by descendants of the divine phoenix, emperors and empresses with vast temple-palaces, harems, treasuries, armies, and so on.

The Tsainanese residents of Frontier Town seem to find this characterisation of their homeland either amusing or irritating to various degrees.

Wes visits Drungfield again for more treatment for his aggravated injury and gets a scolding from her.

Wes seems to be healing nicely now – a week or so in Forlas, and he's already substantially more physically robust. His Aura must be acclimating to the world.

She still calls him a 'damn fool boy', though.

runs the errands for Drungfield

The Indeedee thanks Wes for his assistance, considers this payment in full for her services. She manages to avoid praising him directly, or even smiling, but she does give him a surprisingly generous tip.

However, perhaps he is able to connect with the voice again while there and can ask it a few brief questions?

Wes gets a faint feeling of the voice's presence, but not strong enough to converse with. He can feel it more strongly during battle, but that's when he's focused on surviving – some of the wild 'mon in there are tough.

Needs a scene and accompanying friends to be more successful. Other opportunities may turn up soon.

Wes meets Alejandro and proves his skills with mechanical tinkering. His methods aren’t the most refined, and he values efficiency over aesthetics, but his results are effective all the same.

The old Galvantula is impressed with the practicality Wes shows – aesthetics are for artists and the rich, and the rich don't buy spare parts and thingamajigs. He's hired.

The arrest of Ignatius Voclain is still fresh news for most, and will take time to settle. Many have questions about the offworlders' true motives, or whether the next mayor to take office will truly be better for the town, or whether Voclain was framed. The party still needs to prove itself to such sceptics. Even so, many more townies have expressed their approval and gratitude, and the editor of the Frontier Gazette is likely to continue to be supportive of the party, given he was himself a victim of Ignatius' blackmail.

Given all this goodwill, it's no surprise that the party begins to receive offers of support and aid from various members of the town community.

  • Professor Greenbough, the Dolliv horticultural scientist, is happy to supply the party with uncanny berries and seeds from her experimental orchards, providing they give her detailed feedback on their effectiveness.
  • Whimsicott Greasewood, proprietor of the Sun Stone Saloon, is willing to give reasonable rates on rooms and board, and to allow the party occasional use of the venue's event space to host team meetings.
  • Spidops Lorenzo, local tailor, is delighted with the indirect publicity his services have received and has much-improved business, especially with the more charming Clover taking orders. As such, he and his apprentice are now offering their bespoke services at affordable rates, and will even craft uncanny garments for the party that will improve their performance in combat.
  • Galvantula Alejandro claims to be working on 'doohickeys' and 'thingamajigs' for the party's use, with the help of Wes' skills as a mechanic, using new innovations in the application of dungeon dust. Nothing's ready just yet, but he's sure they'll come in handy later...
  • Polteageist Nocwell, owner and manager of Nocwell's General Goods & Wonders Mercantile Emporium, has extended the same favourable rates on food, geo pebbles, wonder orbs, TMs, and other essential supplies that he's arranged with the Ranger Union.
  • Wattrel Nico and Gligar Xoco, the rangers whose patrols take them into town most regularly, have offered to give basic combat lessons, and help the offworlders learn new moves. They may not be expert fighters, but all rangers know how to practice and train!
  • Ledian Thalia, an acolyte at the Sanctum of Wishes, has invited the offworlders to meditate and rest at the shrine in the centre of town, whether for simple recuperation and counsel, or because it may help them focus their energies and temper their auras.

The Item Shop, Gear Shop and Build Shop are now available.

Gerome makes good with his offer to Sonora, and has a position open for her as a bouncer at the Wanderin' Zera. He seems to have a transparent ulterior motive of asking her about the trafficked Pokemon, for one reason or another.

--

Mhynt tries to research further into saints, legends, and other tales, seeking out travelers and foreigners to the town to see if their tales are at all different from more common stories.

--

Occasionally, that strange Nidoran is seen around town. He doesn't leave footprints for long. Some assume he's some new cryptid... especially Dayle.

--

The Bulletin Board, which is totally normal, is still being regularly updated. Most of the missions appear to be typical in nature. After the recent laws that had been looked into, after the Sonora incident, a retroactive check on the board would note that most outlaws on the board were for known roadside bandits, rather than Sonora's more targeted antics. Whatever agenda the bulletin board follows appears disjoint from Frontier's priorities.

After getting some rest, Corey heads out to town the next day to purchase himself a new, more outdoor-activity practical outfit, and one that wouldn't irritate his lingering injuries, using the funds he'd built up working with bounty hunters and taking odd jobs from the bulletin board. Along the way he decides to purchase a few goods in preparation for any upcoming conflicts, wanting to be prepared for anything. Once these errands are in order, he proceeds to the Sand Veil Archives to see what new information he can potentially learn about the town, its people, and, most ideally, any clues about what might pose a threat to the community enough to summon a whole hoard of "heroes" to deal with...

Lyle has been a bit out of the loop since the big battle with Ignatius and been focusing more on his apprenticeship and has been looking for Kalas in town in between his trips to the local taverns. A few days afterwards, he overhears a few townsfolk mention that their present land is on a continent called Luctemar and remembers Ignatius' commentary about being a bastion of civilization. It prompts him to start looking around for maps of the continent, specifically to try and gauge just what the known boundaries of the continent are. He also asks around idly of what, if anything lies may lie further beyond.

Since her nothing-short-of-disastrous conversation with Laura, Bellatrix appears more high-strung than usual. She appears to be keeping a close eye on the outskirts when not entrenched in her work. When the wagon volunteers return, Bellatrix is nothing short of horrified. She seems to have a few thoughts to share with them, especially Koa.

Meanwhile...

Jaak is finally ready to take a group to Blaguarro with the train. Of course, things may need to be delayed while the injured recover but he's more than happy to wait for now.
