• Welcome to The Cave of Dragonflies forums, where the smallest bugs live alongside the strongest dragons.

Guests are not able to post messages or even read certain areas of the forums. Now, that's boring, don't you think? Registration, on the other hand, is simple, completely free of charge, and does not require you to give out any personal information at all. As soon as you register, you can take part in some of the happy fun things at the forums such as posting messages, voting in polls, sending private messages to people and being told that this is where we drink tea and eat cod.

Of course I'm not forcing you to do anything if you don't want to, but seriously, what have you got to lose? Five seconds of your life?

Offscreen Activities

After finishing their business at the Sunstone Saloon, Archie and Corey make a pit stop at the bank - where Archie, at least, opens an account as the mayor recommended. Then the pair head to Lorenzo's shop to tell the Spidops that they've achieved entry into the gala - though as security rather than guests.

Corey opens an account at the bank as well, before he goes along with Archie to Lorenzo's shop to tell him the news.

After leaving Nina's Place, Felin had gone on to do some digging. She visited other bars and less well off parts of town to hear what other mon have been saying about the upcoming gala, how they feel about the way it'll affect their town and she especially keeps an ear out for how the common folk feel about Lucien and Ignatius.

Felin didn't distrust Sonora much, but she wanted to see and hear what she could. Whatever she learns from this, she'll still play along with the plot.

what Frontier town's main source of food is and where it is stored.

A lot of the food in town is brought in from outlying agricultural settlements dedicated to maintaining farms and pastures. Many 'mon supplement their own households by gathering uncanny berries and local crops from the outskirts, by fishing, by cultivating small personal gardens, etc. Some of the wealthy residents have small estates that produce a little food. There's one significant local producer, Greenbough's Empirical Orchard, that supplies the local general stores from time to time.

There is no central community food storage as such. The town has a fairly sophisticated distribution network.

eavesdrop on anyone passing by.

It's quite hard to eavesdrop successfully by her methods, but perhaps she'll get lucky one day.

information on the Sun faith he learned about from the wardens in Sunward. What are the followers' beliefs, what virtues does the order preach, how popular is the faith in Sojavena? He also tries to find any literature about the history of Sunward, or any stories of the Sun's sacrifice told by others outside the faith.

The faith of Sunward is not well-documented by local scholars, perhaps because it is somewhat insular, but Steven does find journals published by early Commonwealth explorers. These recount the following:
  • Much of what Steven already knows from his previous encounter.
  • That the culture has remained stable for at least the past several generations.
  • That the Wardens have a policy of training together with organised groups of outsiders operating in the region, as they believe this is the best way to maintain understanding and peace. This accords with their arrangements with the Ranger Union and the Commonwealth Army.
  • The villagers of Sunward have a faith leader. The word used is 'shaman'. The shaman is not expected to proselytise.
  • The villagers have a lot of impenetrable superstitions and aphorisms.
  • The faith values continual exertion. Devotion might be the best word. Not to to the Sun, but like the Sun.
  • The faith is very localised in this specific form to the so-called 'Ward' itself. Formal religion is uncommon in Sojavena, but some of the idiosyncretic practices in various scattered villages apparently do involve making a 'salute' to the sun, at least. There are occasional pilgrimages from other regional cultures to the Ward, and sometimes they settle in the village. If Steven is perceptive, he may notice a common theme in local beliefs of great heroes sacrificing themselves to protect others.
  • There is no precisely corresponding tale in other local faiths of the Sun's Sacrifice, but there are allusions in some of these journals to other local myths that sounds vaguely relevant.
  • Perhaps if Steven keeps studying diligently and finds new sources, he might be able to piece fragments together to form a clearer picture...

rumors or gossip about the Commonwealth, particularly anything legally dubious.

Nova has spent enough time with local labourers to overhear a lot of griping by now, even with his head down. He will not be impressed with either labour rights laws, or the lax enforcement of them in the Soja'. Nobody stiffs the intimidating Graydians for their pay, but it's apparently a local 'tactic' of certain labour bosses to delay paychecks to make it hard to save up or leave.

Nova also hears tell of a lot of potential investment coming from the east once the railroad is complete. Some rumours are probably nonsense, but it's clear that there could be sweeping changes in the town's future. Many of his colleagues are talking about finding work even further west in new colonies, once labour is no longer as scarce.

Gladion's employer has no idea what to make of it. It's not that it's some magical super-material or anything, it's just very idiosyncratic, not at all like the living metals you find comprising steel-type 'mon.

anything documenting species that aren't from the area or are particularly rare

Gladion does gain a better idea of the ecological landscape of the Soja' and Landsverd regions, but he finds nothing about Nulls. He learns about some species considered rare, but it either accords with what he's familiar with back home, or it doesn't seem relevant.

A scene will be available next chapter that may interest you.

Rodion might spot a member of Las Picaras depending on which watering holes he frequents and how inconspicuous he is. We would need to do a scene for this to amount to much.

Lorenzo seems – very quietly – pleased with this, and will be very satisfied to fashion suitable attire for dashing security agents such as these two.

We should do a scene. Please let me know your availability and suggest where Felin might go to ask around.

The rumour mill turns.

Rodion looks out for any information about crime in the area. In particular about organized crimes, like bandit groups.
Kalas' interest in outlaws may soon pay off, or draw attention, nonetheless.
Regulars at the board start to recognise Archie and Corey as worthwhile extra hands and eyes
Kalas' detective work
@Inkedust @Mr.RMA @Weazel

You learn about some more local outlaws that show up in wanted posters.

Wanted posters in town vary wildly between 'local drunk', 'small-time con-'mon', and outright invasions of smaller settlements.

Hawthorne's Fiends are a particularly vicious gang of marauders that have mostly been active further out in the frontier. They aren't local – they're originally from Landsverd. They are notorious for terrorising entire villages and occupying them to live off their food and labour – and mess with the inhabitants – before moving on.

Unlike Las Picaras, locals are very happy to shit-talk the Fiends. Nobody's seen them within a week's travel of Frontier Town, though.

Those of you who converse with bounty hunters who work the entirely ordinary and mundane Bulletin Board will have picked up by now that bounty hunters in the Soja' try to maintain a reputation of being fearsome, but also noble. Otherwise, you might not survive the lean times without the trust and admiration of ordinary folks, who are indispensable for shelter, tips and leads. That, and the Rangers might come for you if you're too ruthless, or try to make a living off of politically-motivated bounties.

Odette may learn interesting rumours as they pop up while working at Sun Stone.
The locals respond well to Bellatrix's highly articulate lexis and she will have no trouble ingratiating herself with the local gentlefolk in particular.
Silver has access to a source of gossip, which may pay off in the future.
@Sinderella @Cresselia92 @Inkedust

The Gala is apparently a very big deal. A lot of what you hear is just moneyed 'mon complaining about each other, or about their staff, or about whatever. You also hear speculation about all sorts of nonsense, some of which is hard to make sense of... You hear that the Mayor is "reforming candidate registration, yet again", whatever that means.

You also pick up that Ignatius Voclain has apparently been buying up as much land as possible, surreptitiously, and that savvy investors ought to be prepared for land values to climb hard in the coming seasons. Some landlords are planning to sell up to business interests when the going rate gets good and use the proceeds to set up somewhere else.

Lucien takes note of Nova's efforts than that he is in the black very much faster than the rest of the party.
@Ambyssin

Lucien writes Nova a short letter. It's in somewhat circumspect language, but Nova believes it to be both a thanks and an open invitation to correspond, perhaps even meet.

He's not sure whether Lucien means to make overtures towards some alliance or scheme, or if the Prinplup is in fact courting him.

Since agreeing to help Sonora, Ridley's been keeping an ear out for what people in Frontier Town think about the mayor and his son. What does he learn?

Corey shuts himself back into his room and, after getting some rest, decides the next morning to stay in and meditate some more, both to refine his powers further, and to calm himself down and return to reason. He's no moron, he knows that his personal grudge against criminals is clouding his perspective, and all the information that's come to light so far about Ignatius makes him look shadier and shadier, but he's still nowhere near ready to go turncoat and help a bunch of outlaws. Perhaps he should turn some of his focus away from the band of thieves and more toward some of the other criminals that have been showing up on the wanted posters...

In the meanwhile he eyes his new outfit, forcing himself not to wear it until the gala, much as he wanted to. He figures Lorenzo wouldn't want him dirtying it up before the big event after all... He's quite thoroughly impressed with its design. He can't recall ever once having anything nearly so fancy in his wardrobe in his human life... The pants will certainly be a slight issue with his weird legs, but he's adamant on wearing them. No way in hell is he going to ever get used to wearing nothing down there...

(As for what his outfit looks like? Imagine a tiny little baby version of what this gentleman has on)

Jade had skimmed a lot while reading those newspapers, looking for information on the Escarpa. There were some parts of the pages that she just plain didn't bother looking at at all. Mostly anything in the headers.

While wiping down tables at the restaurant she had gotten a part-time gig at, she glanced at the posters hanging on the walls to see that there was going to be a gala on Sunday. Oh yeah, she'd heard the others mentioning something about a gala...

Then she saw the ad for half-price drinks on Faesday nights and paused.

Faesday? What--

Maybe she'd look at those newspapers more closely after work...

She listens in on if their odd powers are starting to get known around town.

Yep.

He asks around at the library about who in town might be working on scientific discoveries, or something related to biology, maybe even medicine.

Finally scene.

keeping an ear out for what people in Frontier Town think about the mayor and his son. What does he learn?

It's not been enough time to learn much. Lucien is stuffy but tips well. Nobody will admit to voting for Ignatius.

wiping down tables at the restaurant she had gotten a part-time gig at

Jade is always welcome to pick up hours in various venues, because of a belief that Meowth get people to spend more (and tip more).

Faesday? What--

Maybe she'd look at those newspapers more closely after work...

Looks like it's Faesday today, Sunday tomorrow. Sunday the 27th of Stone, 181 CE, to be precise.

Once their meeting has ended, Bellatrix spends the rest of the night looking into Sonora and the Las Picaras in an attempt to prove out Odette's claims. She's tries to find some pattern in their choice of targets in particular. Her method of doing so is zorua.

Some landlords are planning to sell up to business interests when the going rate gets good and use the proceeds to set up somewhere else.
When Bellatrix learns of this, she decides, if she has time, to look into the Sohavenian legal and justice system in an attempt to figure out more about the mayor's dealings alongside the typical punishments for crimes such as banditry. I am open to scene this if doing so works better/is feasible.

Mhynt makes regular contact and checkins with Bellatrix to compare notes on what seems to be amiss with the mayor, general popular opinion, and actual implementation of the law.

In the meantime, Mhynt tries to find subtle ways to scout out the Gala. If questioned, she simply says that she is looking for vulnerabilities that could be exploited by the outlaws. Therefore, she makes no effort to hide, and simply acts like she belongs, as part of the bouncer and security crew. While searching for vulnerabilities, she also looks for odd clues that a normal eye may not see--particularly if she notices any hollows in the wall she could Teleport through. Hidden passageways, unprotected documents...

After leaving the Breakfast Hall, she puts on her big girl pants and goes to The Wanderin' Zera, where she relays what she knows so far to a drunk Dave, and also meets Steven (which will be scened).

After this, she begins to go around and collect notes on the mayor and the land-buying practices she learned of--she asks some local shopkeepers about their landlords and rent, she asks locals about past mayors and how instating a political figure works here, she asks some drunks at Sun Stone about anything they might know about Ignonpareils. She even asks some working folks about Sonora and rumors about her.

If time allows leading up to the gala, she might also try to find Sonora again to ask her more about what she knows about Ignonpareils herself and her other ventures.

She also puts some of her money toward a fancy shmancy dress for the gala. Just in case. Because she has to fit in, you know?

She tries to find some pattern in their choice of targets

All you find out is that most of the highway hits attributed to Las Picaras are very poorly documented. Plenty of eyewitnesses will attest to their having happened, the gang embraces their reputation, and there are listed wagons that have arrived bereft of goods, but nobody seems to have kept a cargo manifest, or even noted the contracting companies who own the wagons.

look into the Sohavenian legal and justice system
checkins with Bellatrix to compare notes

Bellatrix will already have realised that bounties aren't determined by a mathematical formula or by laws determining appropriate amounts. They're issued by allocating from a budget, and allocation depends on prioritisation according to considerations such as how urgently the goverment (or the rangers, or a private corporation,) want an outlaw dealt with, how big the perceived threat level is, or if the outlaw has unspent wealth that can be used to pay down costs, etc.

The "wanted alive" vs "dead or alive" distinction is based on whether the party paying the bounty prefers to guarantee a trial, or if they're fine with receiving a corpse. The government generally asks for criminals alive, unless they have particularly violent reputations. There is a strong correlation between violent crime and earning a 'wanted dead or alive'.

Sonora's 'wanted dead' poster is genuinely abnormal. Robbery may carry the threat of violence, but she's not on record as having seriously injured or killed anyone.

The mayor's certainty that she'll be hanged is also sketchy. There are so-called "hanging judges" in the Soja', but there hasn't been a hanging in Frontier Town in nearly a year. The threshold for "grand" larceny is not high at all, and while it is legally punishable by death, most judges choose to instead impose other punishments, such as hard labour.

That's too much to achieve in so short a time!

However, Odette does learn that:
  • The town mayor is an elected office, but terms are long and elections infrequent.
  • There has been one previous mayor, Empoleon Oriane. She was mayor for decades, and succeeded by her son.
  • He is sometimes jokingly called King Ignatius I.
  • Most commercial tenants pay rent to companies rather than an individual.
  • Working folks are very uncomfortable talking about Sonora to someone unfamiliar. One janitorial custodian asks Odette if she's working for the town marshal.

Despite the late hour, Koa is still feeling thoroughly uneasy, and would try and go to the Sanctum of Wishes.
The Wishing-Star, who receives offerings in Frontier Town's Sanctum of Wishes. She is a popular patron 'saint' for the kind of person who would trek thousands of miles to make a new life.
Mostly he wants to see it for himself, see what the 'shrine' is like. But he doesn't make a wish. He has heard tales of the risks of flippant wishes and doesn't want to carelessly say anything, nor does he have anything of value to offer.

Its getting late, so he doesn't spend long, but if its quiet and no one is around, he'll spend a few moments 'talking' to Jirachi (or at least, the saint he suspects is like his worlds Jirachi) about the situation and his worries, and his hopes that the team can be united, and figure out whats going on in the world, and hoping they can stop whatever bad things are happening here.

Finally, if there's no indication otherwise, he muses out loud what kind of offerings the Wishing Star might want (if anything) - not what is traditionally offered her, but if she wants something.

To get her mind off of the gala, Isidora mostly spends time in the library looking into trivial things. Her time with Ridley reminded her of a fairy pokémon that is said to hide underneath a disguise of cloth, and through that she discovers that he is called a mimikyu, though she's still confused as to why he uses a cleffa disguise. (On a somewhat related note, she had earlier figured out that Gladion and the other 'mon like him were chimeras. The newspaper had referred to them as chimeric, and once she realized that's what they were, Gladion made a whole lot more sense to her. The voice must have a screwed up sense of humor to turn a human into a chimera though. And if there are no humans, then how could they be native to Forlas? Unless something else is making chimeras for some reason...)

Looking into the Common calendar, and brushing aside some of the odder aspects (The hell does Seeyee mean?), she notices a few important similarities to the Liberian one, and using the Summer Solstice as an anchor she manages to pin down the time of year as being in the Month of Kakura, (in the back of her head she knew that this would put them on the edge of either the seventh or eighth month of the human calendar, but she didn't know or care how to convert it properly). This information is completely useless, but at least she won't miss her birthday.

The one pertinent thing she checks is on the mayor himself. She searches the library for sources on Ignatius' history in this town. She also looks into how the position is granted and whether or not he answers to anyone higher than him. (note: she has not yet put together that this is a democracy)

There are a few other things she would like to look into, but her stress keeps her from focusing on any one subject for too long. She makes a mental list of stuff to research on a better day.

Koa does some snooping around around main street and Sun Stone, as well around town, to find out if they're still hiring for the gala. He offers his general knowledge and he's a quick learner. He can serve tables, he's efficient at cleaning and has some rudimentary general knowledge around cooking and food if they need extra paws, as well as inventory and service.

Also points out, if necessary, that Lucien himself saw fit to sponsor them and he's been diligent in his work.

If possible, he will also recommend a friend (@Phoenixsong ) named Leaf who is very good at offering a hand. Hoof. If she wants to join him.

After returning from the Saloon, Nova discretely slips notes under Dave and Mhynt's room doors:

Human(-turned 'mon?) supremacy looking like (part of?) reason we were summoned. Mayor seems in on it. Son's aware of this. Either he's a great actor or he's deeply disturbed by it. "If you see a human, think of your creator, not your friends," is what he told me.

He's not sure of a good way to disseminate this information to the others, especially since some of them have proven to be both loud and loose-lipped. Nova figures this is a good enough compromise.

Nova returns to the photography studio the next day and pays for the photo that was accidentally taken of him. He also manages to acquire some old turquoise cloth. Nova fashions it into cloth anklets, like the ones he used to have back in the days before the mask.

She searches the library for sources on Ignatius' history in this town. She also looks into how the position is granted and whether or not he answers to anyone higher than him.

Isidora learns a little about his time as mayor, in which he has apparently focused on improving the town's image, accumulating prestige, and securing investments. He is locally elected, at least in theory, and subordinate to the Governor of the Sohavenian Territory, who is in turn subordinate to the executive cabinet of the Commonwealth government. Or at least, that's what it looks like the gist is. It might be more complciated in all the small print...

if they're still hiring for the gala.

Yeah.

pays for the photo

Kricketune fellow was paid by the Gazette, but is happy to take Nova's photo if he insists on paying.

There is a charity raffle event at Sun Stone sponsored by several local businesses, and some of the top prizes are Gala invitations. This can be a means of getting into the Gala by sheer luck.

Professor Greenbough has an invitation but is far too busy and uninterested to attend. She gives it to Dave, and asks him to see if he can't find any investors who might want to put some capital towards her project without too many strings attached. @Butterfree
