That's true. However, as the observed state of their world is inconsistent with the laws of physics in our own, an explanation other than them being in the same universe must be necessary. I'd tend to go with "as a fictional universe they don't have consistent physics", myself.

And that would be perfectly acceptable, if they didn't try to force a shared universe. But since they do, there needs to be an explanation for a blatant disregard of basic physics
 
I'm reasonably confident their universe isn't so much ours as one with some very close semblances arising by, presumably, incredibly unlikely chance. Well, or we're just looking in on a universe that's similar enough and ignoring all the others that aren't, if you like multiverse theory.

If we're talking about religious reasons, that's different for every religion. From a creative standpoint, directorial sin can cause disconnect in viewers and decrease the overall value of the narrative. (Not just physics, also including various expositional sins)
