• Welcome to The Cave of Dragonflies forums, where the smallest bugs live alongside the strongest dragons.

Guests are not able to post messages or even read certain areas of the forums. Now, that's boring, don't you think? Registration, on the other hand, is simple, completely free of charge, and does not require you to give out any personal information at all. As soon as you register, you can take part in some of the happy fun things at the forums such as posting messages, voting in polls, sending private messages to people and being told that this is where we drink tea and eat cod.

Of course I'm not forcing you to do anything if you don't want to, but seriously, what have you got to lose? Five seconds of your life?

Pal Park (v 3.0)

What alternative would you suggest? Because just letting the masses do what they want would be sheer chaos. Literal anarchy.

There's "ice burns", theres "the living dead", and there's "good grief". So why can't my style be my absence of style?

I have no idea what those are.

"Ice burn" isn't a real burn, it's frostbite. The "living dead" were never dead, just infected with a parasite. "Good grief" is an exclamation of exasperation, not an actual emotion

Fine, I'll do another example. White is the absence of color and thus not a color, yet almost everyone calls it a color. So why can't my style be the absence of style?

Actually, in quite a large number of interpretations the living dead are in fact biologically dead, either before the virus/parasite/magic/whatever makes them get back up or as part of the process of converting to a zombie. And I don't see how any of that relates to your point.

Google defines color as "the property possessed by an object of producing different sensations on the eye as a result of the way it reflects or emits light"; white qualifies. It's an achromatic color, having no hue, but still a color. And it's only the absence of other colors when you have a white background; on black paper, or hey, computer screens, having no color would make something black. On red paper, the absence of color is red. And so on.

So, I guess white and black aren't colors, since they have no specific wavelengths. Instead, white is all of the wavelengths of visible light combined, and black is none of them, making them not colors.

Yes, but the most realistic and plausible ones don't

and white's wavelength is that of its component's

Stryke
What? No. Did you read that definition at all? White things reflect or emit red, green, and blue equally, black things don't reflect any of them, and both of those things produce sensations in the eye that are different from those of other colors. Thus, colors.

Generally speaking very little zombie media is realistic or plausible. Biting is a terrible way to spread a disease, just to start.

I will admit that white is a color, but not black; it absorbs all wavelengths and reflects none. For it to be a color, it reflect at least ONE wavelength. Just because it produces a sensation in the eye doesn't mean it's a color.

Wargle
That's a different thing. That's not a disease using biting as its method of transmission, that's a creature harboring bacteria to make its bite worse. Consider instead rabies. That spreads by biting, and you might notice that the dog population isn't currently 99% rabid with the other 1% huddling in a basement somewhere.

If you insist on using a definition that excludes it thus, then sure, it's not a color. But by at least one official definition and in the common use, black is indeed a color, since it acts like one for practical purposes; insisting on that definition is, generally speaking, only going to cause inconvenience.

Rabies doesn't have the same spreading potential of a zombie virus, which isn't solely contracted by biting

It's not enough to make up the difference. Also, zombies would die off almost immediately to quite a number of factors. Hot weather, cold weather, maggots, accumulated damage, and, if we're assuming the outbreak is in America, thousands upon thousands of lunatics with guns who have a target they're not only allowed to go all-out on but encouraged.

A lot of zombie viruses that I've seen are transmitted by any bodily fluid, quite similar to HIV, Hep B and CMV which are all rather contagious, even if both parties are careful. If one party is intentionally attempting to infect....

On the other hand, zombie-movie protagonists often end up practically bathed in miscellaneous zombie ooze after big action scenes with not a hint of infection.

It would require a fluid to fluid contact for an infection, and most protagonists hardly ever get a paper cut

Even when they realistically ought to be badly banged up. And besides, the eyes, nose, and mouth are nice easy transmission vectors for a person coated in zombie slime.
