    We begin in the Honjo neighborhood of Sumida, Tokyo: a ward that casts its shadow across the clouded Sumida River. Home to corporations and families alike, these streets bustle by day but grow hazy and somber by night. What secrets have been swept away by the river's current, I wonder?

    This is the twilight of the Showa era, filled with all sorts of striking new technologies. By now, a color television can be found in nearly every household. Not only that... If a person should wish to contact someone while they are out of their home, they use public telephone booths that can be found all over the city. Can you imagine a time of such plenty?

    In fact, there is no need to imagine! You will be the main characters of this tale. You, not I, will decide who lives or dies. What's more, if you desire to draw on the power of the curse stones among us... well, I surely couldn't predict what you might do!

In an age of science and technology such as this, we are aware that the length of the day changes over the course of the year due to the tilt of the Earth's axis relative to the sun. Yet night still scares us. When the sun dips below the horizon, we leave the domain of humans and enter the domain of the fell, the eerie, and the haunting.

    Here, in the former Yasuda Gardens, dusk comes with a chill wind, and the wind stirs the pond into gentle waves. The trees seem to whisper to each other. Their branches and leaves shiver. And... is there a wavering light in the distance, or is it simply my imagination?

    This bridge, the second-oldest of those spanning the Sumida River, was built after the Great Fire of 1657, in which many people drowned attempting to escape the flames. Hokusai, perhaps the best-known Japanese woodblock artist, depicted it as part of his Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji series in the 1830s. At that time, swarms of people traversed the bridge on foot; today, cars whiz by, even in the early hours of the morning.

    Dear guests, I must admit this: Kinshibori Park is just a park. It was built a few decades ago, in the 1950s; whatever came before lies forgotten beneath thick layers of concrete. In another few decades, it will be Sumida's 107th best attraction (out of 333) on TripAdvisor. Playground, phone booths, statues. Nothing special.

    That is one story. There is another story here, if you would seek it with me.

    Sumida does not itself adjoin Tokyo Bay, but as I have mentioned, rivers flowing from the bay mark its borders. It is a land of waterways. For instance, Kinshibori Park was built over an Edo-period canal where many townspeople fished. And one night not long ago, when the water still ran clear and the fish shone silver under the moonlight, a lonely girl whispered...

    Oh! I nearly told you something which would have spoiled the story. Please forgive me.

    Suffice it to say that, on most nights, those with strong spirit sense might notice a presence here. A shape in the shadows, a sigh without source. Tonight, however, anybody can tell that Kinshibori Park shudders under an otherworldly storm. Suspicion and resentment seep into every thought. The metal structures twist and warp, the unnatural haze presses in, the wail of curse echoes grows and grows.


    But you, my honored guests, you don't shudder. Your determination has led the tale here. Bloody though the path may have been.
