Platinum/HGSS battle tower

is it beatable without cheating ?

i was talking to this guy who used to be big on competitive battling and knows all the ins and outs and used to be a member at smogon and all this shit, i talked about how i had attempted to beat the battle tower for roughly 2 1/2 years with no success with various teams (starmie/dragonite/blaziken, starmie/lucario/salamence, starmie/lucario/garchomp) despite KNOWING HOW TO EV TRAIN AND HOW NATURES WORK (my timid starmie had a 31 IV in speed so it's literally as fast as possible plus a 26 IV in sp attack and surf/thunderbolt/ice beam/psychic with choice specs). For 2 1/2 years I tried to get a 100 streak. It's literally the one thing I have left to do to consider the game truly completed. I own all 493 Pokémon and I've gotten the second-highest trainer card (highest being 100 streak on the Tower). I've beaten the Battle Arcade and the Battle Castle - haven't seriously attempted the Hall or the Factory but I'm sure Garchomp would destroy the Hall and Factory I just need to choose my Pokémon better. I've gotten as close to 100% on a Pokémon game as is humanly possible without actually being there.

Anyway, the guy I was talking to thinks it's literally impossible without cheating. Which I don't want to try but goddammit I want to beat the game. I got all 493 legitimately so I'd prefer not to cheat if I don't have to but is it even fucking possible

I've gotten a 100-streak in Sapphire, but not Pt/HGSS (Gold print, though). That said, I don't see why it wouldn't be possible. You really can't approach 3v3 like 6v6, though, which to me seems like is what you're doing with your team setups. It's not enough to just have 3 bred/effort trained sweepers.

Then what is the key? I'm shit at team-building so all I do is throw together three strong sweepers of different builds with different typings and type coverage and hope it works.

A good bulky water pretty much tears up all of the teams you've listed there. You need a deeper synergy between your three Pokémon than just type coverage (yeah I know that sounds unhelpful). I've had pretty good success with Baton Pass historically, but there are a wealth of support options. Basically, you can make your team like the AI can't.

Got any decent suggestions? Like I said, proper team-building is just not my strong point :/ I did ask blazhy to breed me a Gyarados/Infernape/Scizor combo so I could play around with those options but it seems like a bulky water might fuck that up too, huh. Idk I just really can't approach the tower without getting all my ideas elsewhere.

Scizor is primarily a revenge-killer and far less useful in 3v3 than 6v6. Not that it can't be useful, I just don't see it working on this team. Gyarados is somewhat of a risky lead, given how many Pokémon can learn electric attacks (the thing about Battle Tower is you don't know until it's too late) and you don't really have anything to safely switch to.

All that said, I really haven't done serious Pokémon in awhile, so nothing's jumping out in mind. A recent team I've used in HG I think, though, was Lopunny/Gallade/Togekiss (Agility, Swords Dance, Nasty Plot respectively).

Wasn't necessarily gonna lead with Gyarados (that was just the order i typed them in), but that's true. idk i just fail at thinking through these things ~_~

hmm i'll have to tell my boyfriend that so he can fuck around with it. (at this point i'm just waiting for him to be met with some level of success so i can steal his pokémon and use them himself.)

Wobuffet kills everything but physical ghost and special dark pokemon. And other Wobuffets.

One person managed to use the AI to his advantage and beat the Tower with a very specific team... I think s/he got a streak of 300? The thread's on smogon somewhere, and it was some weird stuff I don't remember too well.

One thing I do seem to remember is having a Gengar tutored Counter in Gen 3, and given that "OHKO survival" item. If it's hit with a physical attack, it will survive and counter. If it is hit with a special attack, it can Destiny Bond the next turn. The key is how fast Gengar is. That would pretty much ensure the death of 1 Pokemon, and two if you're lucky.

Of course, I'm nowhere near as good; I never even got a Gold Print. So take whatever I say with a grain of salt. I love being hyper offensive, except with my Prankster Volbeat in generation 5. But we can't have that, now can we? In any case, good luck to you.

It's definitely possible. As you can see from that list, the most successful teams are ones that exploit the failings of the Tower's AI, using teams that would lose to most human players. They can be rather boring to play, though. It's possible to use a more standard "beat-em-up" team as well and win--see the very bottom of the list, Fatum's 101-streak team--but miles more difficult.

Checking out the linked teams in that thread should give you a much better idea of what it will take to succeed.

I found that thread earlier. Only problem is that I have no access to good legendaries and like 90% of those teams feature a legendary so my options are quite limited ~_~

I'd love to find a strategy for getting dual 49 streaks on the Battle Subway...I can't seem to, even with a salamence and garchomp.

Pokécheck. If you have access to wi-fi, you have access to all the excellent legendaries you could ever want. Unless you need something *really* out there, maybe (adamant Zapdos?). (Also, for most of those teams, the statistics of the legendaries are fairly irrelevant, outside of, sometimes, speed.) Plenty of them don't require legendaries either, of course.

Well... don't put salamence and garchomp together on a team, for starters. (Not sure if that's what you're doing, but the way you phrased it definitely sounded like that.) There's also a thread for that. But Subway doubles actually seems to be super-variable; I often get to 40+ wins with a team, then end up not cracking thirty a couple of times after with the exact same team, and that seems to be a lot of other people's experience as well. So, if you have something that doesn't seem to be working, it might not necessarily be a team problem.

neg: well i got a deal of sorts lined up with Nobody for some legends and a better-IV Garchomp so ^^

also just dropping in to say update: i beat the battle hall around 3 am this morning with the garchomp I do have. funny lol argenta's first Pokémon was a Uxie that I beat with SEVERE LUCKHAX (garchomp happened to wake up on the second turn of being asleep) so I was totally expecting to lose to her final Pokémon after coming all that way.

thought process: "what's her last pogey? latios? latias? actually no i can take those. articuno? maybe. suicune? OH DEAR GOD PLEASE DON'T LET IT BE A SUICINE"

argenta: *sends out houndoom*

me: "really? okay I'm not complaining :D EARTHQUAAAAAAAAKE"

I only have two more things to do to fully 100% complete Platinum: Get a Gold on the battle factory (which should be fun ._.) and a 100-streak on the Tower. Then I'll have 900+ hours of play time but an accomplishment I can brag about forever :D
