• Welcome to The Cave of Dragonflies forums, where the smallest bugs live alongside the strongest dragons.

Guests are not able to post messages or even read certain areas of the forums. Now, that's boring, don't you think? Registration, on the other hand, is simple, completely free of charge, and does not require you to give out any personal information at all. As soon as you register, you can take part in some of the happy fun things at the forums such as posting messages, voting in polls, sending private messages to people and being told that this is where we drink tea and eat cod.

Of course I'm not forcing you to do anything if you don't want to, but seriously, what have you got to lose? Five seconds of your life?

Prison

The thread title sucks but whatever.

What do you think about prisoners being allowed to learn new skills and gain qualifications while they're in prison?

You know, gardening, carpentry, mechanics, electronics, some academic courses etc. Anything that'll improve their prospects upon getting out of prison, basically.

I'm totally for this. I expect most of us here will be in support of this, but it's worth a try since we do have a few people who I'd expect to be against this ("PRISON IS FOR PUNISHMENT NOT LEARNING" etc).

Yes? If they get out of prison after being in there since they were a teen and never got to finish school, for example, they won't have the skills to survive in the world. At least prisoners who get these kinds of programs can survive once they get out; otherwise, they're better off staying in jail.

Also, I beg to differ on the "punishment not learning" thing. It can be used for both.

Who puts teenagers in prisons and denies them education? If anything they get sent to reform schools where they still have to complete their basic education.

For me, it all depends on the criminal.

Theft, some forms of criminally negligent homicide and manslaughter, possessing illegal substances (i.e. drugs) other crimes where the criminal was driven to it by real external factors or were genuinely accidental, I would be all for rehabilitation and education and whatnot.

Selling illegal substances (i.e. drugs), fraud, some forms of homicide and manslaughter (those not covered in the first section), crimes where there was a negative effect on a person's life but the person could, in theory, be rehabilitated, or it was spur-of-the-moment and they are remorseful, I would give forced labour and rehabilitation and limited education.

Rape, some forms of homicide and manslaughter (those not covered in the first or second section), crimes where there was serious and lasting damage done to someone's life and the criminal was either deemed unrehabiltatable or was completely without remorse, I would condemn to solitary confinement and the bare minimum resources necessary for health.

Crimes committed due to mental defect, depending on the crime and defect in question, I would either have them receive psychological treatment, be put permanently in a permanent secure prison for the mentally deficient or, once again, in some cases I would have to go with solitary confinement and the bare minimum resources necessary for health.

Also, not strictly related to the topic at hand, but while, in theory, I am against the death penalty, in practise, there are plenty of times I have supported someone's sentencing to death.

But it's because they don't have any education that people commit crimes in the first place, why would you deny them this because they had shitty circumstances?

I'm for this and I also think there should be a major renovation to the prison system, especially in the United States because there it is just fucking awful.

Erm, educated people commit crimes too.

Yeah.

And the only renovation that needs to be made in Irish prisons is to get their fucking flatscreens smashed.

prison is supposed to be a deterrent from crime, so it should be less enjoyable than outside life. I fthis is maintained, though, they might as well...
