"Can you hear me? What is happening, you appear dazed."
Virga's words snapped Jade out of where she'd stood, eyes fixed on the beast ever since that Shadow-laced arrow had flown from her outstretched palm. What was...?
Jade shook her head. "It's... it's nothing." Shadows. She hadn't used them much. She hadn't needed to, not with the light at her fingertips and all its burning, driving energy. But this place, this cavern where the air was soaked with Radiance and Shadow... She could feel it getting to her...
The beast endured the strikes thrown its way, barely reacting to any of it, the firepower building and building until finally, an explosion of white-hot flame enveloped the grotto and everything that had the misfortune to still be standing inside.

A whirlwind of fiery strikes, each one quicker than the last, until its movements abruptly froze in place. The beast clutched its face as whatever it had instead of muscles twitched. Their attacks hadn't gotten through already, had they...?
But then to Jade's horror, a wave of dark-light flames swept over its constructed body, mending whatever little damage they'd managed to do.

Jade jerked her gaze away from the beast and back to the task at hand. She reached for the light, feeling for the impulse to ignore everything else when only the mission existed. No thinking, only doing.

The first strike hadn't done much, but the second one, the one infused with light, completely shattered the cluster of shade crystals. Jade crossed her arms over her face as blackened shards radiated out from the impact, tinged with numbing darkness. At once, a screech of alarm and rage rang out from the larger cavern behind her.
Jade tapped a fist to her palm. "These are what's powering it! I think if we break enough of them, then it won't be able to..."
Her words trailed off. Still shaking its head in disorientation, the beast had dropped to all fours, claws digging into the cavern floor. The flame-belt around its waist suddenly flared up with a blinding flash of golden light and its back legs coiled, as if preparing for a breakneck, unstoppable charge.
Jade's stomach plummeted. "It's coming this way!"

Shadows and Radiance buzzed in his veins in a cold duet as he took ragged breaths. This was... Slow down. One thing at a time. They had to destroy the crystals. Destroy the crystals and not get fucking obliterated in the process. The Incineroar was aiming something Radiant into the passage, and the Shadows within him quailed at the sight.
Focus. Focus. Destroy the crystal and then get behind cover and fucking breathe.

Jade's pulse pounded in her ears as she made a break down the winding tunnel, echoes of paws striking earth and boulders crashing to the ground behind her. Out of the corner of her eye she spotted Koa and Silver following a similar path, and Virga keeping pace from the air. Dave, Brisa, and Jesse must have been further back, and for a moment her brain generated the image of the beast tearing through them—red-hot claws cleaving through flesh and bone as easily as—before she drove the image from her head.
The passage widened up ahead. Jade emerged into an open cavern and her instincts immediately yelled that this was too open, she had to get out of the line of fire. But then her eyes locked onto another set of crystals pulsing with that same deep violet hue. Bracing herself for another wave of dark shrapnel, ignoring the echoing rampage behind her, she called on the light, feeling that burning drive to keep going as the energy flowed down her arm, a straight line from paw to target—
Something collided with Jade, knocking her sideways. She caught herself before hitting the ground, but then she heard the crack! of splintering crystal and the high-pitched whoosh of shards cutting through the air, but in her place was—
"Virga?" Jade said stupidly.
"Were you just going to stand there after seeing what happened last time?" Virga snapped, wincing from the wisps of Shadow seeping through her feathers.
Jade glanced away, brow furrowed. "I had it under control," she muttered.
Her ears flicked toward the tunnel. The beast was coming this way. Before Virga could say anything else, Jade shoved a paw into her bag and dug out a Protect Orb, shattering it.

It took an instant for the grotto to turn into a compressed inferno, with that giant feline towering everyone like some nightmarish lord from hell. They had stunned that beast, at least, but Silver knew the reprieve wouldn’t last long. Gritting his fangs in concern, Silver peered through the sea of fire and spotted Brisa and the two fire ‘mons, standing and ready to fight back. But Lyra was nowhere to be seen.
“Gods damn it!” he hissed, squinting his eyes in a more desperate attempt of finding her. He had half a mind to run back and dive into those flames, burns be damned, and his body quivered with darkness. He couldn’t afford to lose her, he couldn’t—
‘I-I-I’m okay! I’m okay… I’m okay…’
Hearing her voice in his brain, followed by the sight of the wheezing Buneary digging herself out of a mound of blackened dirt, did far more to soothe his anxiety than he was willing to admit. She was obviously shaken and charred in some spots, but still very much alive.
Lyra shook her body to scatter the dust. ‘Oh m-my! This is an excellent day to be a digger species, heh… hehe…’
Silver felt such a confusing flurry of emotions that he didn’t know what to do. The more spiteful side of him wanted to berate Lyra for being an idiot and for making him worry and feel emotionally weak, but the quieter yet stronger side made him hold back his tongue, and he felt sheer relief and something soft and warm, realizing that Lyra was only worried about his safety.
Silver heard Koa calling for him, dispelling some of his mental cloud, and he nodded in appreciation. He glanced at Jade, then at the shattered crystals, his mental gears turning. There must’ve been other clusters further ahead, but that meant leaving Lyra behind. Some of his discomfort must have seeped into her mind since she giggled back at him, despite the terrifying circumstances.
‘I’ll be okay! It’s not the first time I’ve avoided getting barbecued by a big, rampaging Fire-type, y’know?’
A sharp spike of Radiance thrummed in the air, and Silver grew alert when the Incineroar lowered on all fours, ready to chase after her prey. But then, another gleam of Radiance shone through, and Silver was surprised to see Lyra standing her ground, her pink tufts alight with a golden hue.
“We might be here to help you, Starr, but I’m not gonna let youkill OUR friends!!” she declared boldly, her Radiance intensifying, and her aura outstretched to create a golden wall of light in front of herself and the others.

…Yeah. Yeah. She was gonna be alright. Silver knew that, underneath that cheerful and carefree smile, Lyra was surprisingly tough.
“C’mon, Koa!” Silver sharpened his claws and flashed a smug smirk at the Electrike. “Time to do what we can do best: break some stuff!”
As such, the boys rushed deeper into the cavern, Koa running ahead (being a quadruped definitely had its perks, he had to admit). Silver sensed a strong pulse of Shadow ahead of him, followed by a golden flash and the boom of destroyed rocks. He glanced briefly at the fragments of radiant crystal, only interested in reaching the source of the other glitters, and soon found the Electrike punching more crystals.
“Hey! Leave some fun for me, too!” he exclaimed teasingly, holding out a pair of claws gleaming with a Radiant light and the other pair shrouded by a Shadowy aura. And with a battle cry, Silver pummeled dark and light crystals with opposing energies, ignoring the horrid sensation of his wounds opening and closing with each explosion. Before long, all that was left of those ominous crystals was a scattered pile of dull debris.
Heat washed over his pelt as an inferno consumed the cavern. Flame filled Koa's vision and his heart skipped a beat. 'Anubis!' His mind jumped to horrible visions of shadowed flames swallowing Anubis, of him him burned away or turning against him
'It's ok! I'm fine, Alpha!' His voice in Koa's head cut through the buzz of fear and he registered finally that the flames were ordinary. Terrifyingly powerful but still fire, fire that could be absorbed. As they faded, Anubis stood unharmed. Embers danced around him and his eyes glowed with energy. Come on, fire can't hurt me! I've stood up to an Entei, remember?
Koa growled. 'Listen to me next time! We don't know what we're dealing with. ...Lay low, avoid anything thats not fire.'
There was a moment of silence, as if Anubis was considering what he said. 'Understood. We must rescue those trapped as well. I'll look for a way in.'
Anubis did understand Alpha. But that didn't mean Alpha was right, and it didn't mean he had any intention of hanging back and not helping. Whatever this thing was, it could not be defeated by brute force. They needed to understand how it hunted in order to gain the advantage. His mothers voice whispered softly in his mind. Know your prey.

Koa turned away from the cavern. He'd have to trust Anubis to handle himself.
Silver's attitude was infectious. "Try and keep up!" he howled, taking off after Silver. Racing past, he pushed down his worry and fell into familiar rhythym and struck. Here it was easier than ever to call forth the cold shadow, let the energy strengthen him as he struck. And there was no need to hold back against these "enemies".
He slid to a halt beside Silver, panting, then gave him a friendly nudge. "Hah, not bad!"
Somewhere in the distance, Anubis' howl echoed.

She braced herself against the flash, the shock to her nerves, the smell of singed fur. Painful as it was, something in her thrilled at it, at the sensations she'd missed for so long. Nostalgia filled her lungs along with the smoke and heat. She could almost pretend it was a sparring match, were it not for...
"I'll get you back," she hissed between gritted teeth.
There had to be room in her head for battle, and naught else. Fortunately for her, that came naturally. Even wreathed in flame – especially wreathed in flame.
Brisa surged up from her injured posture, paws flying with redoubled strength, lightning at her side. Yes, this was where she was strongest! When others would flinch away, her blood roared and her heart sang. Starr knew that. If she was still in there, she'd want this. She'd want this.
Brisa struck a pair of blows strong enough to knock dust from the fucking ceiling, and the Incineroar – the beast – just readied something new and fierce for her. For all of them—
"Better brace yerself, Pa!" she shouted, not looking away from her foe. "This is gonna hurt!"
Yeah. It was gonna hurt. But the more it hurt, the harder she'd fight.

One by one, the crystals shattered under the assault, radiating piercing shards that pelted the attackers with lingering Radiance and Shadow seeping into their bodies. From the caverns they'd left behind, another echoing screech, this one longer than the last. The crystal relay going down had definitely had an impact.

The Beast is not a cerebral fighter, and it cares only about dealing as much damage as possible to as many targets as possible. Its attention is easily swayed from one target to the next, with particular notice given to anyone who would destroy the crystals acting as conduits for its power. Now that all the crystals have been destroyed, it will likely forge a path of destruction deeper and deeper into the tunnels until it can progress no further and is forced to change tactics. Furthermore, the Beast seems utterly unconcerned with self-preservation thanks to its Blacklight Regenerator, and that recklessness might catch up with it as the battle goes on...

Brisa and Jesse emerged into the twisting passage, taking up a defensive position alongside Dave. Behind them, the blazing Radiance had reached a fever pitch until finally, the Blacklight Beast exploded into motion, a golden streak tearing gouges through the walls as it went.
It kept going, a tangled pile of flailing limbs and claws tearing paths of fire with every blow. Searing heat stung in the wake of each strike, even the ones that normally would have been clad with cool darkness. Its movements were deadly accurate, letting it string blows together without losing momentum.
The rampage slowed for just a moment. Just long enough for the beast to turn its head in the direction of the lower grotto. More warm bodies that way. Warm bodies that had ruined the source of its power.

Blacklight Beast's Fire Blast!
Jade coughed hard, the wind knocked out of her from that rush of blazing strikes, the first one tearing through her Protect shield, the second one searing her fur. She picked herself up from the rough cavern floor, squinting through blurring vision. Her stomach lurched as the beast aimed a torrent of scorching flame at Koa and Silver. And then, just to make everything more horrifying, those dark-light flames swept over its body again, healing what little damage they'd managed to do.
It couldn't keep doing that forever, there was no way. There had to be some way to break through, even if it just meant keep tearing away at it until it couldn't restore itself any more.
The beast's flame-belt pulsed with corrosive darkness. It dropped to all fours again, preparing for another blitz.

In the ruined passage the beast had left behind, the air was thick with dust from the clatter of boulders falling to the ground. It wouldn't stay intact for much longer...
Silver breathed deeply once the last accursed crystal had been smashed, his fists stinging with residual pain. And yet, he barely registered his wounds as his mind was buzzing with the exhilarant feeling of his adrenaline rushing and relished the aftermath of his successful attacks and it was so gods-damn glorious!
Silver smirked back, far more easily and widely than he would have if his mind wasn’t literally tripping with Radiance. “Hell yeah, youcan say that again! We freaking wrecked those useless pieces of crap!” he exclaimed, wagging his tail. (Gods, I hate doing this… Why does it feel good and pleasant, though…? Aaagh! Get ahold of yourself, idiot!)
The earth suddenly shook after something heavy rammed or fell not too far from them. That was enough to bring Silver back to a slightly more stable mindset, and he stared cautiously at the passageway they had left behind. A hot breeze blew through the corridor, making Silver even more wary. “…D’you hear that?”
Another crash followed, and Silver saw with horror as Jade was rammed by a massive fireball. And then, as if unsatisfied with the assault, the Incineroar turned toward them, jaws aflame. Now panicked, Silver looked frantically around, finding only cold walls and an extremely steep cliff. No easy (or fast) way out!
“Koa, look out—!”
Violent flames raged across the boys’ stony prison, so intense and merciless that Silver couldn’t hold back his agonized squeal as they ate away at his pelt and skin and ripped chunks of life force out of his body.
Strips of malevolent fire burned all around them and Silver hacked and coughed, the crystal dust scratching his throat and his muscles burning from the inside out. His eyes and nose stung, now watery from the smoke and the burning dust, making it hard to breathe and keep his bearings straight. It took all his stubbornness and willpower to keep standing, refusing to let his ego become as bruised as his charred and screaming body.
“Nnngh…” was all he could muster as he glared at the titanic Incineroar, who probably would have sported a sick smirk of dominance as he would have. But despite his defiant stance, fear was crawling up his spine.
Was that how his targets felt like whenever he bullied and beat ‘em up, whether it was with a Pokémon battle or with a physical confrontation? Scared, pathetic, weak. And now his mirror match was doing the same to him, making him realize what a trulyscared and pathetic and weak delinquent he really was—
“SILVER!!!”
Still somewhat dazed, Silver stared at the cliff not too far from them, squinting his still blurry vision. But even with stunted senses he could clearly detect the familiar brown rabbit, who has slowly descending the cliff. Panic erupted again.
‘Kotone, what the hell?! Are you freaking nuts?! Go away!’
Instead of heeding his warning, Lyra dropped further down and fired back, ‘No way! You’re hurt and need help! And I—’ She took a wrong step and squealed in fear, before pressing hard against the wall. ‘I’m not leaving! I don’t wanna run! Not this time! B-because…’ She shuddered. ‘I… I care a lot about you, Silver! You’re a great guy, one of my best friends, probably the best, a-and…’
“Kotone…” Silver whispered, shocked by her words. There she was, risking her life over and over again… for him. Why, though? He didn’t deserve it…
Lyra didn’t move anymore, too frightened to take another step, but her mental voice brimmed with undying certainty.
‘I believe in you. Always had. You’re so strong and brave and I know you can save Starr! You saved yourself once — you can do that again.’
Time seemed to stand still. Silver could feel every single thing inside his body, from the flames still searing his muscles to his hammering heart. He stared blankly at the Incineroar, who was dropping on all fours, cloaked in a dark aura. Something pulsed from within his soul, wanting to break free, a small bird than had been caged for too long. And now, Silver had found the key and promptly freed it.
A golden light poured out of his body and shot upwards, easily dwarfing the glow of the flames, and coalesced into a majestic spectral figure. Heavenly wings flapped noiselessly, scattering golden embers all around the area, and the soul of the ancient phoenix stared at the Incineroar with unflinching eyes, daring it to challenge his legendary might. The Ho-Oh wrapped his wings around Silver, bathing him with a soothing rainbow light and restoring his tired and scarred body, which only glowed more and more brilliantly.
When the Ho-Oh removed his wings and hovered backward, the Sneasel was nowhere to be found. A taller mustelid was in his place, wielding long and dark claws, and a long feather waved behind his back. The Sneasler glowered fiercely at the Incineroar, his muzzle morphing into a furious snarl, and he held out his dangerously sharp claws.
In a blink of an eye, Silver racked his claws across the face of the giant construct, the swipe fully resonating with his aggressive yet heroic fighting aura, and he slashed relentlessly at the giant feline with his now faster and sturdier and stronger physique.
The beast was challenged by another beast.
Lyra could only gawk from her precarious spot, an overjoyed grin stretching on her face, and her heart fluttered with unbridled joy when a message from a certain redhead rang in her mind:
…Thank you for believing in me…
She didn’t reply back, knowing well that a distraction could be fatal, and instead focused on another important matter: How was she going to climb back up and rescue those scientists?
Thankfully she noticed Virga not too far from her and she waved her paw to catch her attention, smiling sheepishly. “Oh! Hi, Virga! Um… Little help here, please?”

Roiling endless flame razed Koa. Smoke filled his nostrils, heat choked his throat as a wheezing yelp of pain escaped it. Darkness began to pulse through his vision, he saw himself at the mercy of Entei, of a shadowed dragon. Cold shadow blanketed him, soothing, calling him deeper...
'I am here.'
Warm light pushed the shadows from his mind. Coughing, he forced himself back to his feet. His skin prickled and he blinked his eyes, fighting the sting. "That all you got?" he spat. He blinked. The gold light was still there, familiar - Ho-Oh? Silver!? In spite of everything, he grinned ferociously at the sight of his friends new form. "Get em Silver!"
In the back of his mind, Anubis steady voice lent him more insight. There were no tactics, no plan. She only wanted to hurt. So do you.
' We can do this Alpha. We can save them.'
They just needed to distract her. He could. If he harnessed the light. Whatever it took to save her, to save those trapped by her, so be it. She needed to be stopped.
The streaks of yellow fur on Koa's head and tail began to glow. First faint, then steadily increasing until within seconds, he became the light.
"You wanna chase something? Chase this!" His taunting howl echoed through cavern as he zipped nimbly through the chaos left by its rampage. Zig, then zag. He was a ball of light and power zipping across the floor, an almost irresistible target. Each strafe brought him nearer and nearer to the beast.
Then he vanished.
Shadow cloaked his escape as he left behind a golden sphere of light. With a sharp Crack! The light exploded like a camera bulb going off.
From the darkness Koa struck. A blow to the beasts' knee, a strike to its ankle, hammering his fist into its solar plexus (if it even had one) and tearing into its legs. Radiance sparked with every impact and golden light trailed from his eyes as he moved.
