The best game ever?

Eh... I really, really don't like the Pokemon games anymore, to be honest. They're just... badly made RPGs. Level grinding is a must, which is pretty much a sign of a horribly balanced difficulty curve, and... yeah. I can see why there's some appeal to it, but still...

though i actually agree with a part of your opinion, i find this ironic.

anyway, my favorite game ever is xenosaga episode III: also sprach zarathustra. i pick this game because its main character's struggle mirrored mine when i played it and what she did to solve her problems gave me the strength to keep sorting through mine. there are plenty of flaws with the game - a lot of the series' main characters get next to no screen time in favor of three or four of them - and i really wish the developers didn't have to cut the series down to three games instead of six, but it is still a fantastic game regardless and i am thankful to have played it. (unrelated, but why was episode II the only xenosaga to make it to europe? that was silly.)

there aren't really any honorable mentions. i must say i have not played many games in my lifetime..

My four personal favorites, are also the ones I'm biased towards; Chrono Trigger, Mega Man X, Chrono Cross, and Tales of Destiny Remake.

Mega Man X was the very first game I ever even touched, and I was 3 years old =O Granted I really sucked, but I've played the MM games so much, I can literally blow through them no problem. I'm still working on a no damage run of MMX though >.>

Chrono Trigger was the very first RPG I ever played. I think I was around 6 when it came out, and I remember thinking "I don't get it, but it's awesome."

Chrono Cross, I just really like altogether. I loved its extremely large cast, and its unique Element system, and how the battles progress.

Tales of Destiny, while it's got a rather cliche cast of characters, I really like the country bumpkin stereotype of the main, not to mention, it's leaps and bounds better than the original (Though I've got a soft spot for the PSX version), and it has an amazing story. Bonus points go to Director's Cut, since Lion Side shows just how tragic Lion's side of the story was.

Final Fantasy VII.

Okay, let me tell you why. :D I know many FF fans think it's overrated, and I agree that some VII fans are REALLY REALLY ANNOYING. Sometimes I wish AC hadn't been made for that one reason... but yeah, I was given it before I'd ever played a turn-based RPG (unless you count Pokemon, which I don't). I was about ten or eleven, and I completely fell in love with it. I didn't even know Final Fantasy was a series then. (yeah, don't ask why I didn't pick up the 'VII' clue...) I HAVE played other FF games - to name, VIII, X and I recently started XII. Maybe I'll play IX and VI and change my mind or something, but out of the games I've played SO FAR, VII is the best by far.

The game has a certain old-school quality to it that I just adore. The gameplay is my favourite out of the FFs I've played - the battle system was good, and the magic system was the best Squeenix have made. Materia was such a flawless idea to me, I think it was perfectly done. The music was absolutely epic - there were some pieces I don't listen to any more, but the rest I listen to a lot. "Anxious Heart", "Forgotten City" and "Judgement Day" were absolutely brilliant and so underrated. The characters were great, especially the main trio. The plot was confusing, but very well done.

I'm not sure what it is, but VII just has this wonderful... feel to it, I dunno how to explain it. The other Final Fantasies I've played don't have it. The way you interacted with NPCs on the field was just amazing, and the choices in responses to give was the perfect amount. There were too few in VIII and X.

I can see why some FF fans might disregard it as mediocre or overrated, but I love it for the nostalgia it has. I think it truly is the best game ever. Or at least, the best game I've ever played so far.

Okay. Rambliness over.

As for handhelds, I think The World Ends With You is definitely the best cartridge game I've played.
