Hello, and welcome to Zulo's Art thread (I'll make abanner sooner or later...)

Anyways, this is a suggestion thread. Not a request thread. And don't say, "I suggest you make a ..." because that will annoy me. If you really want to and have actually rated my work, you can ask for something, but this is a crit thread for now so I probably won't do it.

Yay! Sprite time!

Mah Fakemon!

It looks like a Huntail/Gorbress fusion! But, I have a folder focuaing on Quilavas, may I add your Quiloxys? Yes, it's that good!
Maybe fusing opposite types should make you better! Like a Quilossom(Quilava/Bellossom)!

Uh, sure you can, with credit of coarse.

It's not supposed to be a fusion, but w/e

I'll add my Linelesses now, so keep checking back!

New scratch!

It's a narwal/lamprey thingy that isn't supposed to have eyes.

I know, it was just shading and posing practise really.

Any suggestions for what I should do next? :/

Since you asked me to crit~

Seems like you're into fish. That's cool; fish are interesting. However, if you're trying for Pokemon-style, you're missing the mark a little.

First off: Pokemon D/P sprites are 80x80. Your Narwhal thing is over that in both dimensions, and really, it would more likely be easier to shade if you made it smaller. So start with the 80x80 canvas and draw from that.

Second: shading isn't just layered on there one on top of the other. It's gotta follow the shape of the body, and it comes from the top-right. In your narwhal, the highlight wouldn't be on the dies, but rather in the middle of the body, and circular. It's hard to describe in text, but... do you understand?

Third, and probably the most major problem your sprites have, is simply design. The idea is key to a fake; bland, colorless fakes impress none and aren't any fun to sprite to begin with. So before you launch Microsoft Paint, get an idea. Even if it's spriting other people's fakemon designs, or for practice doing scratches of existing Pokemon sprites. You want to have a creative idea, good details, eye-catching patterns, and back that all up with solid spriting mechanics. That is the key to scratching well.

Hope this helps, though I might have rambled a bit. ^^; Ask me to clarify if anything's unclear.

Ooh, I forgot about that in my second one.

It looks like it is to me, except for the darkest shade.

I understand I think, but what is a dies? Like the head or something?

Right, I have a new idea! And an evo for the lamprey-narwhal thing, but I might need to make the first one smaller...first.

Anyone have any suggestions for scratchy ideas?

Ooh, I forgot about that in my second one. *Shrug* Nobody's hating on you for it. Just keep that in mind.

It looks like it is to me, except for the darkest shade. No it doesn't. ughh I need a diagram. You know what? I'll do that.
shadingexamplezulosw6.png

That explain it? Also, wow, you have waaaay too many shades on that thing. o_o Does the word "contrast" mean anything to you? Make much more contrast between the shades, and have only three or so on the main body.

I understand I think, but what is a dies? Like the head or something? I meant to say "side." xD; Monster typos eat me alive.

Right, I have a new idea! And an evo for the lamprey-narwhal thing, but I might need to make the first one smaller...first. Don't bother editing-- you can revamp the lamprey at a later date, but right now, the Lamprey isn't exactly a solid concept so I suggest you move away from it or come up with some redeeming quality. Because, see, when making fakes you don't just make "a lamprey thing with a horn that doesn't have any eyes (becauseicantspritethem)." You come up with an idea, like, say, an electric/water Lamprey/Narwhal hybrid that learns Gyro Ball and evolves into a water/steel narwhal with armor. Or something. And you think of what similar Pokemon have done, and you sketch it out in your head (or on paper) before making it in Paint. It's a long process.

Anyone have any suggestions for scratchy ideas?

My replies are in bold. Anyway, if you want to make an evo for the Lamprey, then go ahead. But I suggest you study other peoples' fakes, and official Pokemon designs, and try spriting a wide range of fakemon types and styles.

Wow. Before Twitch shaded it, I thought the nose thing was a tusk.

Where'd you find that Zangoose you pixeled over? It looks like Suta-Raito, which wouldn't allow that.

Here I wasn't trying to steal, I did say it was a pixel-over, not a scratch.

And it is a tusk, not a nose.

EDIT: Here's his/hers

2 EDIT: Oh yeah, that one is olso his/hers, I'll go add credit nao.

...Actually the Zangoose looks more like it's from VN, but whatever. :/ That's not my concern.

The bird thing is... interesting. It's certainly got a better concept (although I don't quite see what a musical parrot has anything to do with playing cards). What you've gotta start working on is how these animals are put together. Birds aren't heart-shaped; they've got a definite head and legs and tail and wings and so forth. Try looking at some photos of birds and sketching their proportions on paper and then try making a different bird scratch. When you're at a loss for ideas, just pick a type you haven't sprited for a while and then an animal, and think of how you can incorporate those ideas into a Pokemon.
