Banned Moves: OHKO's, direct healers, perish song, baton pass

Terrain: Outside the Battle Arena

The battle takes place right outside the Battle Frontier's Battle Arena facility, out in the open air. The immediate area is covered in nicely manicured grass and a few flowers. The Arena building itself is surrounded on three sides by water and a small pond sits on the other side of the battlers, so water moves can be used and Water-types that need to swim can do so. The battlers cannot move away from the immediate area, so heading towards the plaza or another facility is forbidden.

Since this match is happening so close to the Arena, it seems such a shame not to follow Greta's rules... or, at least, a variation on them. As such, both battlers will send out their PokÈmon and attack for three battle rounds (a total of 9 attacks per PokÈmon) before the ref calls a halt. After the three rounds both PokÈmon are recalled and unable to continue in the current battle, and their current health, energy and status are noted for later. Both trainers will then send out their next Pokémon and continue for the next three rounds. At the end (which should be nine total rounds), the health and energy of all Pokémon is totaled and whichever trainer has the highest score wins.

The following rules also apply:

-If a Pokémon has fainted, either due to HP loss OR energy loss, the battle stops right where it is (even if it has not yet been three rounds) and both Pokémon are recalled. Fainted PokÈmon DO still count toward the final score, but as either their health or their energy is at 0% they won't add anywhere near as much.

-If, at the end of the three rounds, a battler is afflicted with a status condition, that condition detracts from their final score as follows:

Paralyzed, Burned, Confused: -10 points
Poisoned, Attracted: -15 points
Asleep, Frozen: -20 points

If the Pokémon has more than one status condition, only the first one they were afflicted with detracts full points; all others afterwards only detract five, no matter what they are.

A small patch of grass outside the Battle Arena has been roped off and currently stands empty beneath a clear blue Hoenn sky. The little flowers peppering the grass within the enclosure don't know just how lucky they are--their friends and family outside the boundary are getting trampled to death by the gathering of sweaty bystanders who've shown up to watch the upcoming match.

The heat in Hoenn's high summer is tremendous, and all present are fanning themselves with crumpled brochures about the championships, enjoying the breeze flung from battery-operated fans, or armed with water bottles and sun hats. There is more than one comment to the effect that this all could have been done
inside the Battle Arena, where there is actually air conditioning, and these are blissfully ignored by the league officials scattered throughout the crowd.

The bellyaching dies down as soon as the first trainer arrives, though; the crowd parts at the sight of the registration badge pinned to their shirt, and all gripes fall silent as they step over the rope and into the arena. Across the field from them, their opponent does likewise.

The flowers in the arena bob and sway as a light breeze whips through the crowd and a referee materializes at one edge of the field, raising flags. For the moment, they're lucky--but only time will tell how the battle might overturn their little paradise.

Re: Negrek vs Chiropter (ref: moon-panther)

All right then. Rook, you're up first!

Let's open with a Fake Out, then follow up immediately with two Faint Attacks. Replace either or both of them with Punishment if Present succesfully damages you on either action.

Fake Out ~ Faint Attack/Punishment ~ Faint Attack/Punishment

Awright, Present, let's see what you've got!

Ordinarily I wouldn't be bothered by a fake out, but I don't like the looks of that technician and STAB. I think we'll come out ahead if we throw up a quick protect here.

Then give Rook a withering mean look (bad kitty!) to stop those faint attack plans of his for a bit. Finish with a noxious toxic while he stands around doing not much, I guess.

:Round One:

Each Trainer chooses their first pokemon for the battle, issuing their attacks and stand back to see their small pokemon do their stuff. On one side of the field stood a small green and white toddler with a red horn on her head, on the other side stood a small cream-colored kitten with a golden coin on his head. Both pokemon look to each other and look for openings and weak points prior to the battle at hand.

Rook takes the initiative and issues his attack first. He charges at Present, a evil smirk on his kitten face as he closes the distance between him and the defenceless, puny, weak Ralts.

Then he slams face first into a unseen wall.

Rook rubs his face and looks at the green child within the wall. Present just stares at him silently for a few moments before her face split with a wicked grin as she looked at the foolish kitten. She sticks her tongue out at the kitten, as well as make other faces at the feline, before her barrier melted away when it finished it’s primary use. Rook hisses under his breath at the cheeky Ralts, the very shadows around him cloaking his body and starting to cause him to fade from view into the realm of darkness.

Present is taken aback from the sudden disappearance act, looking around her for any sign of the silly kitten from before. She nervously bites her bottom lips and starts to wonder if the monsters in the dark ate him up and were planning on coming after her next after they were done with Rook.

Thinking this, she lets out a ear piercing screech when Rook’s claws raked along her back and draws blood from the shadow cloaked attack. Rook let out a evil snicker as the screaming Ralts begs that the monsters don’t eat her, getting caught up in the embarrassing moment of the green toddler. Rook didn’t notice in time that Present moved until he was nose to nose with a very pissed, very angry looking Ralts giving him the nastiest look known to Pokemon kind. Rook lets out a audible ‘eep’ and backs away from the miffed toddler, tripping over a rock and landing on his rump. He could still hear his trainer’s command for another faint attack, but after facing the wrathful eyes of Present he wasn’t planning on moving in such away for a loooong time.

With Rook indecision, Present takes her chance and strolls over to the naughty kitten and starts to cough into her hand, drawing the toxins in her body and coating her hand in the vile ooze that came from her poison filtering organ. She reaches out and grabs Rook by the front of his neck and smears the awful purple ooze all over his face and body, then drop him and folds her arms with a triumphant smirk on her face. Rook hisses as he tries to wipe the horrid stuff off of his face, flinching when some of the ooze rubbed into his eye and made it sting horribly. He glare up at Present through one eye and spits in her direction, declaring she will regret the day she ever crossed Rook.

- From the Mean look, poor Rook was too unsure of himself to even attempt to use Faint Attack in the last action. In my mind, no energy was lost for the last action.
- Rook has been Badly poisoned, suffering 1% damage this round. It will increase to 2% next round.
- With the Mean Look in effect, Rook is under it’s effect for the next four actions
- For those at home. It’s either the liver that filters poison, or the Appendix that holds the poison and later tries to kill you when is bursts in your body.
- Negrek attacks first next round.

Okay, present, last-minute changes of plan haven't gone so well for us the past... two times they've happened so far this match, but let's see if the third time's the charm, eh?

Start off with a thunder wave to make us the speedier one in these parts; that's your default move. If you can't use thunder wave or Rook has a safeguard, instead use a psychic attack to hurl him into the deepest part of the pond you can manage; shove him down underwater as far as you can, too. No paybacks for him if he's just trying to get back to shore! If it would be impossible for you to get him into the pond, just hammer him with a brute-force psychic attack. If he tries to hypnotize you, pull him face-first into the ground with psychic and slam him with energy while he's open. Finally, snatch double team or substitute if it is used.

Now! If Rook's paralyzed but not in the water, it's time to chuck his butt in there. Paralysis should make it a lot more difficult to get out again. If he's already in the water, use another psychic to keep him there, shoving him back out to the deepest part you can manage. Thunder wave him if he isn't paralyzed and is in range; snatch if he double teams. If he sets up a substitute this time, or isn't paralyzed but is out of range of your other attacks, blast him with a straight-up psychic. Same deal as before if he tries the hypnosis.

Last action! If Rook is floundering around out in the water, eat your sitrus berry. If he's not in the water yet, now's the time to toss him there as per previous instructions, or use psychic as a direct attack if neither of the above will work.

Keep your ears covered as much as you can during this round, unless it would interfere with your attacks. Do not look into Rook's eyes.

Thunder Wave / Psychic / Snatch ~ Psychic / Thunder Wave / Snatch ~ Eat Sitrus / Psychic

Throw the meowth into the water with Psychic, huh? Seems to me I’ve seen this strategy somewhere before…

Well, Rook, we certainly don’t want you paralyzed, but being thrown in the water doesn’t sound too enticing either, so we’ll go with option three. Use Double Team twice, though only use enough energy to create a single clone each time, since you won’t be keeping them anyway. Then throw out a Swift attack and let Technician do its thing. You’ll probably be tossed into the pond then, so brace yourself for that and be prepared to swim out quickly. (Actually, if you can do that without it taking up an action, get out right away.)

Double Team (1 clone)x2 ~ Swift

(And don’t listen to them, you’re a good kitty. Yes you are.)

~Round two~

Rook smacks his face to get himself back into the right sense of mind, getting himself amp’d up for his next amazing feat that will rock this place to it’s core. He darts off in a burst of speed, dashing all round the arena to confuse and lower the Ralts’ chances of hitting him. What the speeding kitten didn’t see was the Ralts’ hand cloaked into a dark energy until he ran too close to her body and was swatted at with her paw and stealing his after image and converts it into a image of herself. Rook gapes at her in pure shock when he notices that all his work was wasted and stolen like it was candy. He then shivvers as his earlier aliment kicks in, stinging his insides worse than the last round. Present looks over her shoulder at the foolish kitten and smirks at him, a mischievous glint in her red eyes. She studies the copy of herself at her side and nods, approving of the copy of herself.

Rook shakes himself, loosening his joints and decides not to let this get him down. If she took his first effort, then He’ll just make another one, a better one than the last one. He starts to dart around again, enjoying the wind in his fur and starting to really feel confident in his action this time…until Present’s foot stuck out and tripped him, a familiar flash of black and green swipes at his left shoulder and drains away the energy he created to make another image of Present to her right. Rook collapses to the ground and lets out a mad howl as his work is yet again ripped away from him by this annoying little green girl! He then lets out a another whimper as the poison digs into his tender inner flesh, promising more pain later on. Present laughs at the kitten’s anger, her clones joining in on the taunting of her foe.

That was it. That was the last straw.

Rook jumps back from the three Presents and starts to gather a source of pure energy from his body into his paws. He then sweeps his paws out and to either side of him, releasing star-shaped projectiles at the three Ralts in front of him. Present lets out a surprised squeal and covers her face with her arms, trying her best to weather the attack of shooting stars on her person. She watched the clones on either side of her disappear in a burst of shimmering lights and energy dust. She hisses as the starts cut into her arms and body, leaving shallow but painful wounds on her form. Once the assault ended, she lowered her arms and glares at the nasty kitten. Her eyes glow a eerie purple and lifts her hand upward. To Rook’s dismay, he went with the hand and was now floating above the ground enveloped in a pale purple glow. Present sweeps her hand hard toward the pond, sending the Meowth reeling in the air toward the watery abyss. With a fairly large splash, the cat crushes into the center of the pond and starts to struggle in the water, mewling and hissing at the body of wetness around him. He yowls as his gut stings for the horrid toxins that were now burning the inside of his body. Present smirks and places a hand on her hip.

Now that was how a successful round is done.

I knew there was something missing in that Calc! Thank you for the hand, Negrek. It's been fixed.

Now it's 6% less than what it was before, though. XD Was that just a typo or had you forgotten damage from elsewhere that you wanted removed?

It’s okay, Rook, that was exactly how the round was supposed to go. Don’t lose your focus now.

Still, I bet you’re pretty angry at Present right now, aren’t you? You should go ahead and Taunt her a bit from where you are - make her lose her cool.

Now, if I’ve been counting the actions correctly, Mean Look will wear off around now, so use Faint Attack to get out of the water. Try to time it so that you disappear in time to avoid whatever Present tries to throw at you that action, then attack after she’s finished. You should be right up close to her now, so try to get her with a Toxic of your own before we run out of time.

If Present Protects on the first action, just swim out of the water - and if doing that doesn’t count as an entire action, use Feint as well. Use Faint Attack to dodge and attack as before, and then Toxic - unless she tries to hit you with a status condition-inflicting move that doesn’t deal damage (you shouldn’t have to worry about this if Taunt was effective), in which case you should Protect. If she tries to eat her sitrus berry on the last action, snatch it away with Thief instead. (These alternate instructions also apply if Taunt was used but didn’t work for whatever reason.)

Taunt/get out of water/get out of water and Feint ~ Faint Attack ~ Toxic/Protect/Thief

Let's bring it home, Present!

Don't know how effective Rook's going to be with his taunt due to all that flailing around in the water and such, but just in case, close your eyes and cover your ears as you attack. Use a psychic to force him underwater and make it even harder for him to concentrate on his attack; if you need to keep your eyes open to aim properly, be my guest, though.

Then wait until he attacks you with faint attack and toss him back in the drink with another psychic.

Finally, Rook should be well beyond the range that he'd be able to toxic you, so go ahead and chill if you're able. If you can't, more psychic vengeance.

-Round Three-

Rook spits and flails in the water, trying his best to stay above the water and carry out his commands only to hiss in pain as the poison increased from a minor pain to nails-in-you-eyeballs pain. He lets out a soft whimper when his mouth wasn‘t filled with water. Present on the other hand covered her ears and watched the drowning kitten flail in the water like an idiot. She didn’t quite understand why her trainer suggested her to close her eyes, when all the cat was doing was trying to stay above water. Presents eyes glow a pale purple, like before, and mentally pushes the cat under the water. For good measure, she attacked his pain receptors and kept him under water like she was told too.

Then suddenly, the being that was being pushed down stopped struggling under her metal smack down and the bubbles stopped. Distressed, Present begins to worry if she went to far and killed the foolish kitten, nervously fiddling with her hands. It wasn’t until a claw covered in dark energy when she considered pulling the cat out with her powers. Present cries out when the dark coated attack ripped open her back, causing her to fall to her knees from the stinging pain. Rook smirks down at his foe, living in the feeling of revenge with gusto. Present on the other hand, didn’t find the joke in the attack and slowly turned her head under her red eye was fixed on the Meowth. Before Rook knew what hit him, he was roughly jerked into the air by the neck as if a invisible hand was grasping him and was tossed back into the pond once more. Rook lets out a cry as he was tossed back into the water, his sides hurting as the poison attacked his insides again with a fiery edge.

Rook, once the poison’s attack lessened, started to collect all the poison in his system and tries to spew it out. He struggles at the poison attacked his tongue one last time before he could finish his attack on the water. He lets out a mournful sound as the poisonous ooze dispenses and disperse in the water around him, making his last effort a waste of time. Present chuckles under her breath and sits herself down on the ground, closing her eyes and starts to slip into a calmer lace of mind. She could feel the energy of the world slowly flow into her, giving her a boost to her vitality.

This is how you end a successful set in her mind.

The Ref then blows a whistle and calls to the trainers to return their pokemon to their balls and get ready for the next set as soon as possible. Both trainers draw out the orbs that house their beloved pokemon and return them quickly. The Ref then suggests the Trainer Chiropter to feed the Meowth with a Rawst berry soon after this battle.

Well... that didn't work out the way I'd hoped, but still, it's not as bad as it could have been. Don't feel bad Rook, you did great.

Now, to take over from here... Psychopomp, you don't mind fighting your old teammates, do you?

Not bad, Present, not bad. And, after overmuch consideration, I'll choose Acheron to serve as her replacement.

All right, Acheron, let's start it off simple. Strike Psycho no matter where he lurks with a faint attack, then blow him away with an ominous wind--widespread if necessary to shred through clones--and finish with another faint attack. Try to use your attacks to either dodge his (if possible) or, in the case of ominous wind, blow any kind of projectile back in his face; obviously, you're patient enough to wait for the right moment to do so!

Bounce status effects back at him with your magic coat, and if he protects, nasty plot.

Well, start off with a Mean Look to stop those Faint Attacks before they become a problem. (As, fortuitously, I recently learned that Mean Look can do that.) Follow up with Foresight, then hit him with a Focus Punch while he's stuck being corporeal. If for whatever reason Mean Look didn't work, use Body Slam instead.

:Round Four:

Both trainers think carefully about their next moves, selecting their pokemon with extreme care. After a moment of unneeded pause for drama that was never needed, they call out their next battlers and shout their commands. On one side of the field stood, or rather floated, a grim creature that looked like a minion for the Reaper himself. On the other side stood a smaller creature with eyes that glittered in the light. The Ref notes that passer-by’s groan as they see Negrek’s favored gremlin. The ref then announces the start of the next round and starts to observe the battle.

Archeon glances around at his new surroundings, taking in details on the arena and his opponent. He pouts when he sees that there wasn’t anything shiny or tasty around, not even a little diamond on someone’s finger to eat. As he pouts about the lack of food, Psycho takes his chance to phase out of view in attempts to get closer to his old comrade. Appearing once more, he rests a hand on Acheon’s shoulder, causing the gremlin to jump a bit before spinning around and facing the steely glare of his opponent. Even being a ghost himself, Acheon felt shivers run down his spine. Thinking quickly on what he is to do, he holds his hands at his side and tries to melt into the shadows on the ground…only to realize that he wasn’t melting anytime soon. Archeon, doing the next best thing, jumps away from his opponent and stares at his hands to figure out why he didn’t disappear into the shadows.

Psycho snickers darkly as his old friend, staring down at the fool. He cracks his ghostly knuckles and closes his eyes to concentrate. Archeon looks back at Psycho, studying him closer. He growls, knowing that this had something to do with him. While taking in notes on Psycho’s body, looking for weaknesses and blind spots, he didn’t notice the faint red light escaping Psycho’s one eye as it opened. A red beam sweeps the field in front of him, striking Archeon square in the chest. Archeon scratches where he was hit, finding the red light itchy and not sure what it did. He glare over at Psycho, confused on why he was playing nice and not even trying to hit him. Shrugging his shoulders, he holds his hands out ahead of him, muttering under breath a foreign dialect as the wind started to pick up around them. Archeon’s jeweled eyes flash as a army of spirits erupt from the realm of the dead and rain down on the Grim Reaper of pokemon, Psycho. The wind swirls around them as the spirits attack Psycho mercilessly with their claws and fangs. Though they seemed pleased to attack one of the pokemon that drag others to the spirit world, they weren’t as grateful as to help Archeon further and disappeared into silvered smoke. Archeon rolls his shoulders and smirks at his opponent, daring him to retaliate.

And retaliate he did. Psycho disappears from view for a mere second before reappearing inches from Archeon and slamming his fist into the Gremlin’s gut with full force. Archeon gasps as the wind in knocked out of him, flying a few meters into the air and landed with a solid thud on the ground. After a few moments of grace to catch his breath, Archeon gets back to his feet and looks incredibly confused. He thinks back to the earlier attacks, beginning to recognize what they really were all too late. The Grim ghost took away his ability to phase and disappear as well as the very aspect of being a ghost with this first two attacks. Archeon let out a enraged howl, curling his clawed fingers into a tight fist as he glared holes into Psycho. He knew his last attack would do nothing, so he just stayed his ground and took the time to calm himself. He needed time to think things through and find a way to reclaim his dignity with a cool head.

The Grim was going to pay

Ugh, sorry I'm late. Kept overthinking these commands. Anyway...

Well done, Psycho. Now let's try something a little different. Taunt Acheron a bit - be sure to stay close and talk loudly so that covering his ears won’t help. Once that’s done, I want you to phase out and possess Acheron’s body. Then just kick back (chill) for a moment and let the little guy waste energy and/or hurt himself.

If Acheron Protects or Detects on the first action, however, Calm Mind instead. Then try to Taunt again on the next action - if he tries to Protect or Detect again, chill. After that, use Confuse Ray if Acheron is Taunted, and try to Taunt him again if not.

Taunt/Calm Mind ~ Possess Acheron/Taunt/chill ~ Chill/Confuse Ray/Taunt

No sweat, Acheron. Here's what we're going to do.

Shadow sneak your way into the pool. If you can't do that, instead run and jump into it fake-out-like. We just want you underwater; no need to go too deep. Then, even if Psycho follows you and tries his taunt, loud as he likes, the water will distort his words so you won't be able to understand him anyway. But hey, may as well cover your ears too; no need to take any chances.

Next, if he's successfully followed you underwater and phased into you, brew up some nasty toxic. You're immune to your own poison, but I doubt Psycho's going to like possessing your body when nasty toxic starts to circulate through your veins... or... lack-of-organs, wherever you keep it. Just spit it out into the water around you after it's built up and hopefully poisoned Psycho; he's going to have to depossess you at the end of the round, so hey, maybe it won't have diluted enough for him to avoid poisoning that way if he did before.

If he hasn't succeeded in possessing you but you aren't feeling all raaage, pop your head up out of the water and blast him with a shadow ball. If you've been taunted, instead wait for Psycho to dematerialize and then shred the heck out of him with an ominous wind--he'll have no luck getting inside you if he's torn apart and blown away by some angry spirits.

Final action, snatch Psycho's chill if you can (look inside thyself, my son); otherwise, om nom nom sitrus berry. If you're feeling obligated to attack, tear some crap up with fury swipes to vent your spleen.
