Driftveil City has plenty of attractions: its picturesque lighthouse, its bustling marketplace, and, most important of all to trainers, its official gym. Surely any of those would have made fine sites for a battle and a worthy introduction to Driftveil's culture.

Instead, trainers and spectators find themeselves huddled, shivering, in a glorified walk-in refrigerator.

As it turns out, it's rather expensive to rent out Nimbasa's music hall for a few crazy trainers to have their battles in. And it's even more expensive when you have to pay for repairs after a couple of those trainers smash a hole in the stage and set fire to the orchestra pit. Over budget and facing a suddenly-inflated insurance premium on whatever location it decided to rent, the league found itself too strapped for cash to secure one of Driftveil's more desirable locales.

There was no way they could simply call off the battle, though, so they made do. And, with a bit of effort, they even managed to wrangle a local into teaching their battlers a unique bit of Unovan battle-style, the rotation battle. He's a heartbreaker... His name... Charles...

In a rotation battle, each player sends out three pokémon from the get-go, though only one fights at a time. Up to once per round, at any time, a trainer may choose to "rotate" their pokémon, swapping the one in battle for one of the two in reserve. Now, though the arena manages to avoid the iciest parts of Cold Storage, the floor's a little slick, and the pokémon being rotated in will need to take an action to get its footing. The act of rotating therefore takes a full action, but is otherwise unpenalized. A pokémon that is rendered uncapable of leaving the field under its own power cannot be rotated out.

The frigid conditions of Cold Storage are going to sap a bit of the fun out of this new battle style, though. It's so freezing that all pokémon in battle will lose 5% health and energy at the end of each round, whether or not they're currently in battle. Ice types, of course, love the cold and are immune to this effect--too bad they happen to offend Charles, who can't stand their shameless aping of his aloof and distant attitude. At the end of each round, any ice type actually in battle has a 10% chance (each) of becoming taunted, tormented, confused, or paralyzed as a result of suffering through Charles' intense, furious, and yet carefree stare for the entire round.

For these battles, the first player to post will post all three pokémon that they will be using, as well as which one will start in the active position. The second will then do the same, as well as issuing commands, and the battle will proceed as normal from there.

The chattering of teeth can be heard loud and clear as the trainers make their way through the cold storage, as well as grumblings and mutterings about the chosen battle spot. As they reach an area mostly clear of icy crates, a bearded, long-haired man can be seen waiting patiently, cool and aloof as ever. Charles takes a few moments to run through the rules of the rotation battle, sagely advising them to go "full-throttle", then settles back down again as things get underway. bulbasaur and Denryu are shivering badly despite wrapping up well, and they're starting to wish they'd also invested in a Frizard. Nevertheless, they both tense up as Byrus gives the signal to start things off, and they hastily fumble for their three Pokémon.

The storage is illuminated by multiple flashes of white light as both trainers unleash their choices, and the place is suddenly bustling with eager fighters. The Pokémon look a little less happy when they see and feel the conditions however, and a few disgruntled growls can be heard as they huddle together for warmth.

Round one

As the battle begins, Bromine and Caber both step forward, ready to start things off. Bromine growls at her brutish foe, then digs her paws into the frozen ground, searching for a fault-line. A spidery network of deep cracks begins to travel along the ice-coated floor, slowly snaking their way towards Caber. Intense heat begins to roar out from the widening crevice as Bromine works on stoking up the fires, and an orange glow reflects on the melting ice. Caber gives a low growl as he watches the fissure creeping towards him, then hefts his beam under his arm as he lumbers forward. He reacts just in time; Bromine’s eyes snap open as she gives a loud howl, and a raging column of fire erupts from the end of the trail of cracks. The fire falls just short of its mark, but Caber winces a little at the intense heat. Bromine snarls in frustration at her wasted efforts, then hastily tries to regroup as she plans her next attempt.

Caber grins widely as he sees Bromine’s disgruntled look, then takes a deep breath as he prepares to get himself pumped up for battle. He hefts his beam up high, then stretches out his bulky limbs as he mutters some words of encouragement to himself. Bromine watches sulkily as Caber begins to jog on the spot, his stumpy yet muscular legs thudding heavily against the tiles. As Caber slows to a halt, he finds himself feeling a lot peppier, not to mention slightly more warmed up from his little work out.

Bromine is not looking quite so chipper however, but she’s just as determined to fry Caber to a crisp. She whacks her paws against the cracks she’s already made, snarling and spitting out little spurts of fire as she works on heating things up. The cracks in the ice-coated floor slowly begin to light up again with simmering fire from deep below the earth, and Bromine eagerly savours the new-found warmth. Caber tenses up when he senses the danger, and as the fire surges forward through the cracks, he prepares to hurl himself out of the way again. This time however, he completely mistimes his retreat, and the fire erupts from beneath his feet. Caber gives a roar of pain as the raging inferno engulfs him in its fiery grip, and he drops his beam with a loud clang as he tries to shield his face. It does little good; the blaze leaves his coarse skin badly singed and blackened, and he can only flail about in pain as the fire rages around him. When the inferno slowly dies off, Caber is left growling and grumbling furiously to himself, and he winces noticeably as he attempts to pick himself up. An ugly black mark is visible on his chest, looking raw and red. The area around him is still smouldering slightly, and the icy patches are now covered with scorch marks.

Bromine grins triumphantly as she watches her charred opponent shuffle painfully forward. Success! Caber gives an annoyed grunt as he snatches his beam up again, gingerly testing the best way to hold it without aggravating the burn wound across his chest. He slams a heavy fist onto the broken tiles, causing Bromine to jump up with a startled yelp, then squeezes his eyes shut as he begins to concentrate. Bromine quickly tries to regain her composure after that embarrassing slip-up, but she can’t help but glance warily over at her opponent as she sees what he’s up to. A shimmering orb of orange energy is crackling to life in front of him, slowly taking on a darker tint as it grows in size and power. Caber slowly opens his eyes again as he surveys the process of his attack, then lets loose a loud bellow as he sends the energy hurtling forward.

Bromine gasps as the fizzling orb is sent careening towards her, and she scrambles madly to get out of its path. Unfortunately for her, she doesn’t react quickly enough, and the blast strikes her dead on. She gives a strangled howl as the energy traps her in its grasp, ravaging her small form with jolts of pure fighting energy. Caber sneers at the floundering Vulpix, a look of savage triumph on his clownish face. There’s plenty more where that came from too!

Bromine gives a small whine as she struggles to pick herself up off the cold floor. The sheer power of the attack has left her badly rattled and quite worried. There’s definitely no way she’ll be able to stand up to multiple rounds of that. She slowly drags herself into a sitting position, then glances warily over at her foe, trying to figure out what makes him tick. Well, he's certainly a muscular brute, and he's certainly imposing despite his lack of height. She narrows her eyes and growls gruffly, adopting what she hopes is a intimidating fighting stance. Caber stares blankly at Bromine for a few moments, wondering what prompted this odd behaviour, then tries to suppress a small chuckle as he sees the fluffy little fox stomping about. Obviously she’s trying to imitate him, and doing a horrible job of it in Caber’s humble opinion. He looks at her scornfully, then takes a heavy step forward as he prepares to show her how a real fighter acts.

He slams his fist into the ground with a rumbling growl, then begins charging up the shimmering sphere of dark orange energy. Bromine falters a little as she sees the familiar glow of the powerful energy blast, but she quickly puffs herself up again, muttering and snorting as she watches the orb’s progress. Caber grunts, feeling begrudgingly impressed with her courage. It isn’t going to help her much against this though. He grins widely over the shimmering sphere, then punches it forward, sending it hurtling through the air. Bromine glowers and tenses up, trying to time her dodge correctly this time; but her luck does not hold. The shimmering energy catches her in its blistering grip, causing her to writhe and howl in pain. As it finally fizzles out, Bromine is left looking worse for wear, and her expression is grim.

Buh, I'm uninspired, but whatever.

Start off with a Toxic, then Focus Energy, and finish with Focus Blast.

Toxic ~ Focus Energy ~ Focus Blast

I should really be doing this when I'm not feeling lazy.

Round two

Bromine slowly pads back a little, wincing from the pain of her wounds. As Caber takes a careful step towards her, she rapidly spits out small spurts of fire, trying to react as quick as she can. The embers cluster together, forming the crude but recognisable shape of another Vulpix. With that completed, Bromine hastily breathes over it, bestowing it with some of her own life-force. As the hollow eyes of the substitute light up with a silvery glow, Caber gives a harsh grunt, then spits up a mass of purple toxins, and the new creation immediately steps in to take the hit. The venom splashes onto the substitute, temporarily dousing its flames as it sinks into its body with a nasty hiss. Caber growls, and looks on irritably as the poison sinks into the creation’s body and harmlessly disappears. What a waste.

Bromine gives a small sigh of relief, then stomps forward, glaring over at her disgruntled opponent as she plants her paws firmly on the icy floor. She takes a deep breath, and the icy air she inhales immediately becomes blazing hot as she stokes up the fires for another scorching. With a howl, she unleashes the tremendous burst of flames, and it sails forward in the flaming shape of a kanji symbol. Caber bellows in pain as the fire blast strikes him head-on, engulfing him in a raging inferno.

When the blaze clears, he's left grimacing and clutching at his irritated burn wound, his bulky form looking blackened and scorched. He gives a pained growl, then gingerly sets down his beam and tenses up his muscles as he tries to concentrate. The nagging pain of his burnt skin makes things trickier, but a burst of fighting energy soon flares up around him as he regains his focus. He gives a low growl as he feels his mind becoming clearer, and eagerly flexes his muscles.

Despite her earlier success, Bromine can’t help but feel a little wary after seeing that display. Nevertheless, she hides her fear well behind her gruff, role-play charades, and waits patiently behind her substitute for her opponent to make his move. Caber furrows his brows as he sizes the two of them up, then swings a heavy fist onto the cracked tiles. Bromine tenses up as she sees the familiar orb of orange energy slowly building up, and she gives a low growl as she retreats back further behind the crackling embers of her doppelganger. When the orb starts darkening in colour, Caber pushes it forward with a rumbling snarl, and it streams straight towards Bromine like a comet. The stationary substitute springs to life as Bromine cries out, and it leaps forward to meet the attack, leaving a blazing trail in its wake. The focus blast collides with it forcefully, immediately blasting it apart in a scattering of fiery pieces. Bromine winces a little, and turns her head away from the dazzling display, blinking rapidly to clear her field of vision.

When she turns her head back again, she narrows her eyes and focuses intently on Caber, much to the fighter’s discomfort. He frowns, shifting from foot to foot as he returns her gaze with a nasty glare, but it does nothing to dissuade her. Worse still, he can feel a nasty tingling sensation creeping across his head, leaving him feeling disorientated and slightly muddled. He grumbles to himself and drops his beam with a loud clang as he scratches at his head, looking perplexed and irritated. Bromine’s snout twitches a little as she tries to suppress a smile at his comical expression, and a gray spark suddenly flashes across her eyes. Caber freezes in place for a moment, then abruptly comes back to life, looking even more annoyed and disorientated than before. The tingling sensation has passed, but now he’s left with the nagging feeling that he’s forgotten something. As Caber scowls and scratches his head, Bromine just looks on with a barely concealed grin.

Fire Blast, Extrasensory, then Chill in succession (and make sure you successfully complete and make each one hit each one before proceeding with the next). If you see him trying to Bide on the first action, Chill twice then Fire Blast; on the second action, Chill twice; on the third action, Fire Blast If Caber tries to set up a Counter, just wait it out before attacking. Oh, and if he sets up a Protect shield, let's Chill on that action. If he has Double Team Clones, maybe try to sweep a Fire Blast around?

I checked the AaAG, and I was surprised by how little a burn will effect me. Let's try and finish her, Caber. Two Hammer Arms, then Focus Punch. If Bromine uses a damaging attack on the last action, Hammer Arm instead.

Round three

As Caber continues to grumble perplexedly to himself, Bromine gives a low howl before she breathes out another tremendous burst of fire. The raging inferno billows forward in the familiar symbolic shape, then engulfs Caber in its burning grasp, effectively distracting him from his problem. Caber gives a pained howl as he flails about, struggling to shield his face from the blaze as he waits for it to die down again. As the fire blast is reduced to its last simmering embers, the scorched and blackened fighter is left looking more than a little disgruntled, and his heavy beam looks distorted out of shape.

With an angry bellow, Caber stomps forward and abruptly brings his fist crashing down on his tiny foe. Bromine lets out a strangled howl of pain and surprise, squirming madly to get out from under Caber’s heavy fist.

Caber grunts, then lumbers backwards, shifting his beam to his other arm as he examines the battered looking Bromine. The Vulpix gives a feeble whimper as she examines the array of bruises on her ruffled hide, but tries her best to regain her formerly tough demeanour. She takes a deep breath, then closes her eyes and concentrates on tapping into her psychic abilities. The steady throb of pain reverberating around her body makes things trickier, but she eventually manages to reach out towards Caber’s mind and give it a mental shove.

Caber jolts forward suddenly, his eyes widening as he drops his beam with a clang to clutch at his head. An agonising bolt of pain sears through his mind, leaving him doubled over and holding his head. The pain soon passes, but Caber is left feeling weak-kneed and head-achy, and his mood has become downright foul. He scowls over at the haughty Vulpix, then snatches up his beam and lumbers forward with a growing roar, heedless of the painful protest his burn wound gives. Bromine gives a muffled gasp as Caber’s fist comes crashing down on her again to deliver another punishing blow, and she has to fight even harder to free herself from his heavy hand.

Caber draws back his fist as the crushed looking Vulpix limply scrambles to get away. She retreats back as far as she can, her six tails trailing lifelessly behind her. Caber watches her carefully for a few moments, but she seems to be intent on taking this opportunity to gather her wits, and she simply slumps down onto the cold floor with a groan. That suits Caber just fine, and he grins nastily as he prepares his next attack.

Bromine looks up with bleary eyes as she hears the sound of her foe’s heavy footfalls booming out from across from her. She’s too tired to pay them much heed though, and she closes her eyes tightly as she silently hopes that he’ll leave her alone for a bit.

Caber crouches down and stares at her intently as a bright aura of fighting energy flares up around him, coating him in its orange glow. The aura steadily grows in intensity as Bromine remains completely oblivious, before Caber suddenly rushes forward with a deafening roar, his blazing fist outstretched. Bromine jolts forward, her eyes widening as she sees the heavy fighter lumbering towards her, but she is helpless to defend herself from the tremendous punch he delivers right to her gut. The Vulpix is sent flying backwards like a rag doll, then lands roughly on the icy ground with a loud thump. Caber gives a small grin as it becomes clear that she is out for the count, then slumps forward heavily as he allows himself to momentarily give in to the growing pain. As much as he hates to admit it, the tiny fox certainly didn't go down easily.

Well done, Caber. Only two more experience points until you have two beams.

Now kill it with fire.

Hammer Arm ~ Focus Blast x2

As bulbasaur hastily zaps Bromine into her Pokéball, he calls up another of his waiting fighters to take her place. Caber furrows his brow as he hears the trainer's words, wondering if the cold is messing with his brain. One of the waiting Pokémon happily answers to his words however, and Ampharos is awesome eagerly bounds forward. The Larvitar breathes out a plume of icy breath and hops from foot to foot, trying to warm himself up a little. Waiting out in the cold storage has robbed him of some of his strength, but he's still more than ready to finish off the muscular brute in front of him.

Caber looks on disbelievingly at the tiny Larvitar, then gives a dismissive snort as he grabs hold of his beam.

Round four

Caber looks on grumpily at the misnomer bouncing about in front of him. He has no delusions about defeating him, but he's definitely up for giving him a good punch to the face before he goes out. It would at least ease the shame of getting finished off by a measly Larvitar.

Caber grimaces as he strains to get his aching muscles moving, his eyes narrowing as he concentrates on the tiny little rock beast in front of him. Just as he manages to heave himself upright however, he's abruptly knocked right off his feet again as the earth below him begins to tremor and crack. Caber gives a muffled grunt as he lands face-first on the freezing floor, his jaw smarting and his head ringing. As he looks up blearily, he sees Ampharos grinning over at him, before he stomps his tiny foot onto the ground with a grating howl. The web of cracks in the floor beneath Caber suddenly splits wide open again, and a burning blast of fiery energy hits him right in his face.

Caber struggles to raise his quivering arms to shield his face, but the blazing flare has already sapped the last of his strength. His bulky arms thump down heavily, and as the blast fades, he remains lying on the cold floor.
