Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!
World War 3 was brutal.
In the beginning, it was a series of skirmishes, erupting battles in the Middle East and Africa over the usual things: corrupt politics and religion. Soon, other countries became involved, and the reasons became more and more numerous, until finally, the inevitable occurred: the war went nuclear, and within a matter of months, the face of the earth was scarred and damaged beyond immediate repair. Many humans died, but some of the more inventive predicted this, and began work as soon as rumors of the war began to spread. Their project, Fire-Bird, was kept a close-guarded secret, and it took several years, but in the end, it was well worth it.
The result of their hard work, luckily completed before nuclear warfare became prominent, was a beautiful reward. As humanity slowly but surely destroyed itself, a select group of humans reclined in a paradise that was unimaginable to those who toiled in gritty, bloody warfare: Infinite.
It was truly a sight to behold, and indeed could only be believed if it were seen with one's own eyes. A sprawling city, resting on a giant, broad mechanical base, hovered lightly over the clouds, perched in the air. The glowing walls of the buildings, constructed of pink-swirled white sandstone, glowed in the sunlight. A huge, sweeping palace dominated the city. It's walls were red, constructed of red sandstone. A huge stained glass window portraying a phoenix (obvious symbolism for how humanity would rise again) was centered in the building's face, and several of its tall towers featured this as well. The city and its population, all intelligent, strong humans that had been hand-selected before the building of Infinite, prospered for generations, living in wealth and peace and surviving on a two hundred-year store of food and water, awaiting the end of the war in comfort. They were oblivious to the violent reality of World War 3, but Infinite's creators were not. They set about in secrecy, constructing beings of mechanical body and sentient mind that, unbeknownst to them, would be the most terrible thing to happen to the city. They worked tirelessly on these monstrosities, keeping themselves hidden in the bowels of the platform that the city rested on, not stopping until they were completed. Then, when the war eventually ended, and the Earth was left barren and dead, they released these beings, both to the world and to the public. They were christened Guardians of Life, ten in total: The Wolf, The Whale, The Kodiak, The Eagle, The Serpent, The Leviathan, The Stallion, The Badger, The Boar, and The Lion. They were massive creatures, built of reinforced metals and gifted with intelligence equal to that of their creators, were made the guardians of Earth's tattered remains, put there to care for the blasted planet, and also to protect it from future warfare. And for a long, long while, they performed perfectly, cultivating the blighted soil and encouraging growth of new life, even steadily reintroducing wildlife. But, as with all perfect plans, they had a fatal flaw.
At the end of their two-century-long reign over the skies, the people of Infinite were becoming less and less happy. The stocks of food and water were running low, and rations had started being enforced. The creators, desperate to keep their people happy, sent a small team of well-trained, logical citizens down to Earth to check on its condition, wondering if it could finally be recolonized.
They never returned.
It was discovered that they had been slaughtered brutally by something that was much more of a clean killer than any wild animal. Horrified, the creators discovered a terrible truth: their beloved beings, the Guardians of Life, had gone rampant. They had taken over Earth after years of no influence from humans, and were under no circumstances ready to hand it back over to the creatures whom they saw as less than competent. Humanity had, after all, been the cause of the Earth's near destruction the first time, and they were smart enough to know that should they allow humans to return, the same would be inevitable. Pair that with their dangerous, violent nature, caused by rampancy, and the human's return to Earth (and therefore survival) seemed impossible.
Unsettled by this news and angrier than ever about the rations, the citizens of Infinite began to get unsettled, rebellious. Greatly frightened by the thought of another war, the creators began seeking new answers. And, smart as they were, they succeeded in finding a solution.
A group children were taken from their mothers at birth and raised in secrecy. The mothers agreed to give up their children, wishing for the city to be saved, willing to sacrifice for the greater good. The children were kept from society, raised only knowing each others and the beasts they were gifted as partners when they were six years of age. They were trained to be hardcore killers and survivors. These were the hope of humanity- the ones who were to defeat and kill the Guardians.
