your blood flows through my veins
Since I got rejected from Cambridge in January, my grades started slipping because I really couldn't be bothered. It was right before my exams, which didn't really help, and to top it all off I was just feeling like shit in general, which is pretty normal for me because my main talent is whining.

But to be honest, I'm in the middle of a bad bout of bronchitis which has given me time to reflect and apart from the obvious (I have no reason to complain because of how privileged I am etc), I've just sort of come to the conclusion that I'm doing okay.

I just got an offer from St. Andrews with a pretty manageable average, my teachers were very generous with their praise during the parent-teacher thing, my logo for the school Summer festival won the contest, I've got more friends than I ever did (even though sadly I don't hear from my online friends that much anymore because they're busy and I've been off the internet more) and I've reached the conclusion that in whichever direction I take with the weird-ass relationship I have with the guy I love, I'll have to learn to deal with it. I love him very much, but there's no reason to torture myself with it, because if I have to be totally honest the other reason why my grades are going down are because I spend most of my time wallowing in depression because of some bullshit love-related reason.

I'll just have to tell him I love him and hope we will remain friends.

So yeah.

Life is okay.

hey, I sympathise with you. I was incredibly bitter for ages after I got rejected from Oxford. just remember that absolutely loads of people got rejected, including many people who would've probably gotten in normally, simply because so many people applied this year due to the fee rises. besides, undergad isn't everything: if you want to pursue an academic career later, then you can still do a postgraduate degree at Cambridge and that counts far more than just doing an undergrad there. besides, oxbridge is just a bunch of boring posh nob public schoolboys :P

Why don't you take a gap year and reapply next year with some experience in the field you want to take a degree in? Which degree did you apply for btw?

Yes, exactly! Oxbridge have not rejected you permanently. Although really, St Andrews is perfectly acceptable, especially depending on the field you're going into! It's a very prestigious university in its own right, and well done for getting in (can you tell I didn't :c).

As for this guy, you will get over him, and eventually meet someone else. This is how these things go. At least you're sensible enough to value your grades over pointless, unhelpful angsting.

I'm doing History :o and yeah I'm pretty pleased with St Andrews, make no mistake! The thing is that I got a NOPE from Cambridge in January and I just heard from St Andrews a few days ago, so for the past two months I've just been really depressed because I didn't think I was worth anything :v it is a great attittude to have.
I'm not sure I'm good enough for Oxbridge but I might reapply in the future.

I've been having angsting about that guy since this time last year because I love and I'm pretty sure he loves me too but we're both too awkward and cowardly to do anything about it v:huh:v so welp

St. Andrews is very prestigious as well - and you get reduced fees by virtue of being in Scotland!

And hey, at least you're further than I am in my love for another guy - yours actually reciprocates (maybe) your feelings. Just don't be afraid :)

ETA: With the History degree, perhaps it might be a good idea to do a gap year and do some kind of history experience, like applying for work at one of the big museums in London, or across Europe or something? My Classics teacher took a gap year before she got accepted to Edinburgh for her BA, and she went and did some work on archaeological digs in Italy.

Thanks guys :o and yeah now whenever Oxbridge is mentioned I just go THEY'RE ALL A BUNCH OF UPPER-CLASS TOSSERS ANYWAY a bloo bloo bloo ;___;

I do this, it's excellent fun! It makes opal go "No we're not how can you say that now excuse me I'm going to get my formal robes for the candlelit dinner this evening in the Great Dining Hall!".

Plus, Scotland is awesome. I've never been, but everyone I know who's visited is basically in love with it, so. Although, thinking about it, it would be nice to have you more nearby for TCoD meetups and such :D?

But in seriousness, university as an experience is awesome. Once you're there, it doesn't really matter which uni you're at; you'll get out of it what you put in, so you'll have a great time wherever you end up going. And when you've settled in and made amazing friends and adore your course (which will happen as long as it's not exam term), you won't be able to imagine studying anywhere else. I was sad when I missed Durham, but I am so happy I ended up at Kent. Even though I have to put up with my sister mocking it all the time.

Oh my god, you are never going to let me live that down, are you? It was one! time! Also it's simply 'Hall', the fact that it is Great is inherent. 8D

No fees, in fact. 8)

It's because Scotland approves of people being able to afford higher education :D

And heyyy, St. Andrews! I can come and stroke you and Ruby's faces in your sleep if I wanted to. Ohoho.

with respect, this is possibly some of the worst advice you could give. the fees will be tripling next year, but if you accept your uni offer now you'll get to stick with current fee levels for the rest of your undergraduate degree. which is why I'm rofling at the gappers and year 12 kiddies. :)

I'm doing History :o
respec' bro! :D

and St Andrews is very prestigious and gives a top-class education, but if it's posh people you want to avoid you may have picked the wrong uni. :P

don't take my word for it, but I'm fairly sure no fees applies only to Scottish residents going to Scottish unis. otherwise every tom dick and harry from England would be trying to apply there. :(

no, let's edit that statement a little.

It's because Scottish MPs voted for uni fees in England whereas English MPs can't lay a finger on Scottish policy.

there, that's better now. remember kids, devolution is a one-way process.

^ I had completely forgotten about the fees rise. Bloody hell now that's reminded me that I'm probably going to be paying £9,000 a year by the time it comes to me going to university.

Scottish residents and other non-UK EU citizens.

you say that now, but when the hordes of furious English students invade Scotland then we'll see who's laughing. :3

Yyyyeah sorry about that, but our plan is pretty much to charge you guys more to study here! And English people couldn't invade a plastic bag if it jumped up and begged them to, but that's not the issue.

I'll stop clogging up VPLJ's thread now though ♥
