Lucas vs. Whirlpool

I'm going to go against my better judgement and send out Wisp against a Steel-type (again).

Well. I really dislike those stat boosts, so Haze them away. Will-O-Wisp until it works; if she Protects, Sunny Day. Finish with a Fire Punch; if she Protects, Substitute (10%).

Haze ~ Will-O-Wisp/Sunny Day ~ Will-O-Wisp/Fire Punch/Substitute (10%)

why is this the same exact thing i did with our ref

Haze, eh? Well, as long as that's going to be on the field, use Swagger. After that, use Thunder Wave and then Thunderbolt to really reinforce the paralyzation even more.

Yeah, it's a field. There's... grass. And hills. And... a stream in the middle. That's about it.

Pre-Round

In a red flash, Whirr disappeared. Whirlpool, after a moment, settled on avoiding the obvious way, and he grabbed a Dusk Ball on his belt, and threw it with might. The device cracked open and exhaled a black mist that hung up in mid-air, before finally dissipating and revealing Wisp the Gastly. Lord of the Fireflies waved at him and he grinned back. Quite a formidable opponent he had been, and the Gastly was ready to prove its worth again.

Turning to his foe, Wisp instantly lost his smile. Another steel-type – he glared at his trainer. Whirlpool’s only answer was a short, nervous laugh. Wisp sighed and concentrated on the battle. If he lost the other one, he was growing used to steel-types, their low speed and painful physical attacks. This could only turn to his advantage.

Round XIV Start

Wisp quickly analyzed his foe. The Ferroseed’s thorns were far pointier than he had ever seen before, and his armor was noticeably thicker. Surely, this Pokémon had reinforced his natural weapons earlier in the battle - and Wisp had exactly the right answer to that. Using his natural affinity with gases, he spewed a strong breath of frigid air, which plunged the entire battlefield in a thick fog. The humid air quickly attacked Ferroseed’s metallic composure, blunting his iron spikes and rusting his otherwise though skin. The Pokémon showed no sign on discomfort, though – this little guy had a real future in poker.

Enjoying the new temperature, Wisp was happily floating about, careless. He was only paying little attention to his opponent when he heard a very vindictive remark – surely it was addressed to him. He turned to Ferroseed, who was as always motionless (and expressionless) and gazing in his direction. Since he lacked an apparent mouth, it couldn’t be him… could it? The Gastly looked around curiously, but besides the battlers and the humans, no one was frolicking on the plain. Another insult flew to him, and this time Wisp was 110% sure it was the steel-type. Once more, he turned to him in anger, and Ferroseed kept on jabbering like crazy, but he had no mouth. Sounds were only… coming out of him, as if he was a living speaker or something. Nevertheless, he was quite offending for a mouthless Pokémon, and soon Wisp found himself in a blind rage, wanting to shred the thing apart.

And the Gastly knew what would hurt. Steel-types hate fire, don’t they? And unlike his previous foe, Ferroseed was far from comfortable with fire. Madly laughing, Wisp spitted a formation of small fireballs, which flew lazily over Ferroseed. Being so motionless, he was unable to avoid even the slow Will-O-Wisp – the purple flames landed on his side and left searing marks. If it wasn’t of the humid fog, I might have just caught in fire. Still, he stayed emotionless, and preferred to replicate with a status attack on his own – generating a small amount of energy, he released it in a shockwave, which swept the field before striking Wisp directly, disrupting his nervous system and rending his movements somewhat jerkier. As if it wasn’t enough, Ferroseed began to charge another electric current in his metallic organs – a much more important one, this time. Before Wisp could even realize what was happening, he was struck by an electric arc, spreading sparkles all over and making him hiss in agony.

The Gastly took a few moments to regain control of his organs, and stared at Ferroseed, red-eyed. The worst part was the Pokémon’s blank look, as if he didn’t give a damn about his opponent. Wisp’s confidence was dwindling, so decided to take a more offensive approach. He concentrated and activated the volatile gases deep within himself; effectively putting himself on fire. Now surrounded by a fiery cloak, Wisp rushed to his opponent, raging. He heavily crashed on the Ferroseed, spraying fire but also viciously wounding himself on the iron thorns. Quickly forgetting his own pain, he searched for a sign of response in the steel-type. After a few seconds, when the smoke finally vanished, Wisp caught the sight of Ferroseed’s face.

He was frowning.

Use Swagger once more to try to make that confusion a little more severe. After that, use Payback twice, as long as he's moving before you. If not, just use Thunderbolt. If he Protects, make a 10% substitute, but not when you already have one up.

Swagger/Substitute (10%) ~ Payback/Thunderbolt/Substitute (10%) x2

How much longer is the haze on the field, anyway?

Let's blow that Haze away with an Ominous Wind, then phase deep enough into the ground to avoid that Thunderbolt. Chill (x2) underground to try to lighten up the confusion (and paralysis).

Round XV Start

As the fifteenth round opened, Wisp was once again first to move. Trying to overcome his rage, he began gathering ghostly energy into a deep breath – only; the sight of the emotionless Ferroseed was ruining any attempt at focusing. As much as he tried, he was unable to muster the shallowest of Ominous Winds, and soon he had to give up, head filled with increasingly numerous dark thoughts towards his nemesis. Ferroseed himself was very pleased of the effect he had on Wisp (of course his face didn’t show it at all but-) and kept on bragging about his merits over those pitiful ghost-types, as poker-faced as ever.

The Gastly, red-eyed, made a last attempt at destabilizing him – he hurled himself towards the steel-type and phased through him at the last minute, diving deep into the ground. Ferroseed didn’t seem scared at all – his heart was beating like crazy, though. He tried to hit him on the way with a swift Payback, however his body was unresponsive and he was unable to move – soon, Wisp was too far away for him to touch it. Meanwhile, the ghost-type had found a very convenient spot and was relaxing, slowly regaining his lost senses.

Having no idea where his foe was and whether he was moving before him or not, Ferroseed tried another strategy, letting loose a strong thunderbolt that spread through the battlefield like a spider net, roasting the grass that remained in a matter of seconds. The target, however, didn’t feel the attack the least, and was keeping on clearing his mind of nasty ideas. Ferroseed growled – a hiding opponent wasn’t fun to battle at all.

Why didn't he hurt himself in confusion? And there is no status on Wisp at the beginning of the round, so it's unclear if it went away or not.

Confusion in ASB can either fail an attack or cause recoil. Notes say the confusion went away, but not sure about the paralysis.

How could Ferrothorn be looking at Gastly's body?

Impossible.

For the statuses, I don't know, something must have happened when I copy pasted the descriptions... Anyways, it is fixed now.

Whirlpool is right: Usually when you confusefail you have only a 50% chance at hitting yourself.

When Wisp is attacking you, just point your helmet at him. That should aid in him actually hitting it. Anyway, if he moves before you, use Payback. If not, Iron Head.

Round XVI Start

Wisp sprung out of the ground as fast as he had entered. Feeling calmer and at the same time fiercer, he was ready to face his opponent like a man… ghost… thing. Ferroseed was looking back at him with his blank stare, but the Gastly wasn’t as intimidated by the trick as he had been earlier in the battle. To him, the emotionless expression was more a proof of stupidity than nerves now. The two enemies glared at each other for a long time, trying to figure out what their nemesis was thinking. Of course, it was obsolete, as the two Pokémon had mastered the art how showing absolutely no emotion, and both of them failed to discover anything about the other.

Wisp, abandoning the idea of reading through Ferroseed’s gaze, decided to take on a slightly more offensive approach, and the steel-type did the same on his part. Wisp’s gaseous body once again caught on fire, while Ferroseed’s was surrounded by a dark aura, waiting for the ghost to come closer. It was a real massacre.

Wisp took a deep breath and hurled himself towards his foe. He crashed on the Ferroseed like a meteor, nearly exploding on contact and spraying scorching flames all over his iron-clad armor. Of course, the spiky Pokémon was prepared, and Wisp felt the combined thorns from Ferroseed’s helmet and body foraging his delicate flesh, and he screamed in pain. The steel-type didn’t wait for his foe to regain his composure, though, and he smacked him with a headbutt filled with vengeful dark energy, throwing the poor Gastly backwards and sending him rolling in the mud.

He recovered slowly, levitated up and stared at his foe once more, bursting in flames again. He sure wasn’t done with the fun. One again, he threw himself to the Ferroseed, leaving a blazing track behind, and the meelee continued; Wisp tackling his foe with his flaring body, restlessly - and trying to ignore the searing pain from the thorny recoil, while the steel-type retaliated with body slams shrouded by a searing dark veil.

As the round came to an end, both Pokémon were scorched, bruised and indescribably tired. They had the feeling the battle could only end by the death of one of them, plain and simple.

Round XVII Start

The feeling the battle was lost was slowly growing upon Ferroseed. His faster, healthier, harder-hitting opponent was something to deal with. He trusted his trainer, though, and he would follow his orders until the end. He was a real soldier, after all – and if he couldn’t defeat the Gastly, he could certainly make him remember his name. As the green energy shield shimmered in front of him, he glared at Wisp. The longer he would survive, the harder it would be for the cocky gas to dispose of him, right? Right?

Wisp smirked. The Ferroseed was slowly sinking, and there was nothing he or his trainer could do about it. He blew a cloud of sickening gas, similar to himself, actually, and orbs of life energy began to clog out of the Gastly body to sink in the ominous cloud. Its core thickened, forming a sphere, and all of a sudden eyes popped out and a mouth opened wide – it was a nearly exact replica of Wisp. Ferroseed eyed his new foe. Sighing, he let his energy shield vanish in mid-air – things were quickly getting worse.

Things also worsened when Wisp burst on fire for the gazillionth time. The steel-type couldn’t do anything to escape, since he lacked legs. At that moment, he wished he could turn into a Ponyta or something, and just run the hell out of that place, anything to escape the searing sensation of fire devouring his skin. But of course not, he had to stand there, attached to the ground and helpless. He sighed and closed his eyes shut, and once more the Gastly collided with an explosion of demonic flames washing over him.

Wisp, while the iron spikes and craggy helmet had dug in his skin, was grinning like there was no tomorrow. His helpless opponent, sinking into desperation; it was an invigorating thing to see. When Ferroseed made an attempt at mocking him again, he nearly fell for it. But the sight of his decoy just popping in the way and mocking him in return, it was just too amusing to bother getting mad, and Wisp couldn’t help but burst in laughter at the discomfiture of his formerly scary opponent. Once again, he gathered volatile gases and lighted up. He stayed there for a few seconds, just to admire the mortified look of Ferroseed – he wanted to be sure he would remember this for a long time – and hurled himself towards the steel-type in a blazing explosion.

Ferroseed, left smoking by the fiery tackle, grudgingly began to gather static electricity, and released it in a small shockwave. Unsurprisingly, the substitute just appeared there and took the blow like nothing, smiling sadistically. Ferroseed let out a roar of rage, red-eyed. He couldn’t do anything at that point, except stand firmly where he was, waiting for the blow that would finally take him down.
