Halan the Riolu.

Halan, lets start out with a nice and gooey Toxic, so we can have a advantage in status. Then, lets follow up with a Shadow Claw, then finish with Force Palm.

Now, if the star tries to block your attacks with Protect, switch to a Feint.

Toxic/ Feint ~ Shadow Claw/ Feint ~ Force Palm/ Feint

Okay then. Halan is going to try to cover you with some awful toxins, so set up a nice Substitute (10%) to block them. Then, immobilize him with Thunder Wave. Now, barring a critical, your copy should survive Shadow Claw, so use Water Pulse and hope for confusion.

Somehow managing to remain upright without limbs, Ruse keeps its ruby centered on the riolu as it begins to secrete water from its topmost point. The water oozes out, dripping down onto the platform – and growing upwards. It stretches out, shaping itself into a nearly exact copy of its creator. The water stops flowing and the second staryu solidifies; at this point it’s nearly impossible to tell the difference between the two.

Halan bounces on his feet, annoyed. He coughs, acidic liquid rushing up his throat to his mouth, and he spits it out at one of the staryu. His accuracy is somewhat maimed by the bright shine emitted from the staryu’s ruby center, but the toxic still hit its target – not that it mattered. The viscous gew slid right off the dummy staryu, who remained completely unharmed. Clearly, it hit the wrong staryu.

Not that Ruse is complaining. The staryu doesn’t even pause to think of what could have happened; instead it beings to spark, tiny flashes of electricity snaking across its watery body. Somehow it controls its enemy type enough to release it at its opponent in a controlled wave; the electricity discharges unto the riolu, locking his muscles into place.

It only lasts for a short while, however, before the riolu manages to regain control over his small body. Growling, he stumbles forwards, still lacking complete control over his body. He’s good enough to attack, though, and his small paws fade out as ghostly energy envelope them, granting them power beyond their normal means. With a spasmic witch, Halan dives towards Ruse and slashes at it with his claws – only to be intercepted by the other staryu, the one he hadn’t aimed at. His claws strike true, unhindered by the staryu’s blinding ruby, but don’t seem to do any noticeable harm. Halan regains his footing and glares at both staryu, while neither of them seem to pay much attention to him.

He was completely unprepared for what came next. A powerful, extremely cold jet of water struck him too fast for him to see it coming; he braced himself, digging his toes into the platform, but the water still managed to push him a few inches backwards with its tremendous pressure. Once it died down, leaving him rather nicely soaked, he knew quite well it had come from the staryu. That damned Pokémon was just asking for it.

Snarling, Halan ran forwards, his left palm out and glowing with pure physical energy. He slammed it down, prepared to strike Ruse on its red center – but instead hit the solid platform. He yelped in pain and cradled his paw to his chest; the staryu’s brightness had blinded him enough for it to dodge his attack, along with his slower movement. He swore under his breath. The staryu was turning out to be more trouble than he’d expected.

Excellent work, Ruse. Your still having a substitute is very lucky on our part.

Since you still have a copy, lower his accuracy with Flash. If he protects or otherwise prevents you from hitting him, use Barrier. Next, fire off two Water Pulses, using Cosmic Power if he prevents you from hitting him in some way.

Flash/Barrier ~ Water Pulse/Cosmic Powerx2

Ok. Let's see if we can pull this off, my dear.

I want you to get to the target as fast as you can. Combine a agility with a bullet punch, hopefully once that substitute is gone, the true opponent will be standing right behind it. Once you break through the doll, hit the real deal with a Drain punch!

Let's see what will happen.

While Halan is recovering from his miss, a sudden bright light flashes throughout the arena, stunning the riolu so much that he falls onto his behind. He covers his eyes with his paws almost immediately, but it’s too late – he’s momentarily blinded. All he can see is white, even with his eyes shut and even after the flash fades.

And, even worse, he’s completely unable to move. His muscles lock into place, blocking any attempt at movement – let alone an agility or bullet punch. Even if he could move, he wouldn’t be able to see well enough to attack, so he doesn’t really complain.

Ruse focuses on its opponent; the riolu is still all-too-close to the staryu, so it would be nearly impossible to miss, so the staryu releases a powerful rush of water it hits Halan at maximum force, pushing the stunned riolu several feet backwards. Halan falls onto his back, unable to support himself; due to his small size and weight, the water pulse still pushes him rather far.

Just when his eyes are beginning to regain some focus, another stream of water hits him in the face, pushing him back even farther. Since the previous water pulse had made the platform beneath him rather slippery, he finds it harder to gain traction, and moves even further than before – only stopping several inches before the edge of the platform. He sighs with relief when the water pulse stops coming.

Carefully, he gets up off the ground, his eyes barely able to see and his muscles twitching occasionally. He walks towards where he thinks Ruse is, his fist beginning to glow slightly with pure energy; as he nears the staryu, he slams his fist into it – but hits nothing. Luckily he doesn’t hit the platform, instead simply stumbles forwards before regaining his footing, though this doesn’t comfort him very much. He glances around, trying to spot the staryu, but he simply can’t find it… his eyes are really failing him.

Hmm...this an't good...lets see..

Well...how about we start off with a Foresight...hopefully it'll help your vison. Finally, I want you to combine Agility with Drain Punch.

Hopefully...we can pull this off.

Since I doubt Foresight will do anything and I don't like your energy, Chill on the first action. Next, use two Water Pulses - that confusion might yet happen.

Though it doesn’t feel very tired, Ruse doesn’t object to its command, instead releasing its hold on gravity and dropping gently to the platform. The staryu can immediately feel itself calming down; it’s barely noticeable, since it was hardly exhausted, but no one really objects to a break.

Except for Halan. The riolu grits his teeth; he stands only a few feet away from the resting staryu – not that he could tell – and yet is unable to move an inch. He was quite sure that this move would have cured his pesky blindness, but noo, his stupid muscles have to object! He curses under his breath, wishing vengeance.

Slowly, Ruse rises from the platform, easily finding Halan and focusing on him. The staryu quickly releases another burst of water, accompanied by a high-pitched echoing scream; both hit the paralyzed Halan, knocking him onto his back and pushing him ever closer to the edge of the platform. Luckily he stops several feet away from it when the water dies out.

Halan shakes himself, water droplets jumping off him and landing everywhere. Clearly his paralysis has lifted for now, though he doesn’t take this for granted. The riolu is already feeling downtrodden, so early in the battle. He frowns, closing his eyes, and focuses.

With his eyes closed, it takes him a few moments before he can really see. The arena comes to focus within a few seconds, a gentle blue aura surrounding him; since the platform isn’t alive, the aura is weak, barely noticeable. But in front of him glows an incredibly bright aura – in a shape he knows quite well, by now. Beside the staryu, though, is another star; this one glows much less bright. Halan shrugs this one off, figuring it to be unimportant. The star-shaped Ruse is crystal-clear to Halan now, which is all that matters; the riolu gets to his feet, finally grinning.

Perturbed, Ruse waits a moment before releasing another burst of water towards the riolu. This time it’s more powerful than even Ruse expected; both Pokémon hear the screaming accompanying the water, and the crash as Halan is knocked onto his side once more, pushed way too close to the edge of the platform for comfort. He winces as he carefully gets to his feet, his eyes still closed; he nearly slips, but manages to stand straight, easily finding Ruse.

And much to the staryu’s dismay, the riolu charges. He seems to have no difficulty aiming this time – even with his eyes closed! – and reaches Ruse within seconds, too fast for the staryu to see anything. Its fear is quickly replaced by relief as its substitute jumps in the way, taking the attack; Halan crunches down on the substitute’s ruby center, liquid black energy leaking from his jaws. He shakes his head aggressively, tearing the substitute to bits; the broken substitute fades back to its liquid form, creating a puddle on the platform below. Wiping his mouth, Halan opens his eyes at last, squinting at Ruse’s bright illumination. He finally feels some confidence.

Ruse, on the other hand, is stunned by his display of aggression. Its coolness gone, the staryu is instead startled and even annoyed; that crazy riolu could have killed it. It should be locked in a cage or something. Crazy, crazy riolu.

Okay, this should be easy from now on. Just fire off two Water Pulses at first, but if your opponent uses Protect or something similar, chill. Finally, Surf him, and chill if he protects or does some equivalent.

Also, if you're using an attacking move, try to move after he does, especially on the last action.

Obeying its commands, Ruse waits patiently for its opponent to attacks first, hoping the riolu will miss or fail to attack at all. Unfortunately this is not the case; despite his weak eyesight, the close quarters make it nearly impossible to miss and Halan rushes towards the staryu, flailing out with his little arms and kicking with his legs with as if returning all the damage Ruse had done to him throughout the battle. But despite the overall aggression of the attack, it seems to do little damage; while Halan steps back, glad he hit at all, Ruse is simply stunned by his brutality – not by the damage itself.

Quite glad that its attack will distance him from itself, Ruse spits out a powerful water pulse, pushing Halan quite a ways away. The loud, high-pitched screeching that accompanies the water attack has finally achieved its purpose as well – Halan covers his little pointy ears, whimpering in pain more from the noise than the water. As if the paralysis weren’t enough!

Despite his newly found affliction, it’s still the paralysis that does him in, preventing him from doing anything at all. He can’t even blink or swallow – it’s worse than it had been any time before. Though Mind Reader would be a simple attack to perform, even when paralyzed, it’s just too much for him.

Ruse practically sighs with relief when the riolu doesn’t attack again. The thing is a bloody monster. More confidently, it releases another water pulse, pushing Halan uncomfortably close to the platforms’ edge – once again. The riolu attempts to move away but, of course, it’s no use; he can’t move at all.

Though he still can’t move, Halan is comforted by something else – his eyes have grown accustomed to the lighting in the arena once again, the flash from before having faded long ago. The riolu would smile in relief if his mouth could move, but instead he just does so inwardly. When I can move… I’m gonna kick that staryu’s ass. Or whatever it has that constitutes an ass.

Ruse, however, is much less satisfied. It seems the staryu is stumped; its commands instruct it to use surf, but when Ruse searches for the water it needs to do so, it finds none. It can feel moisture in the air, sure – and there’s certainly water in its own body for the water pulses – but no lakes or rivers or anything nearby to use for a surf attack. The staryu stares Halan down, neither Pokémon doing anything at all and both equally pleased about it.

Great work, Ruse. Now that he's confused, we can focus purely on dealing damage. Just do your best and we will be close to the end.

Your orders are simple; use Waterfall three times, and make sure to always move after he does - we might as well avoid as much damage as we can.

Ruse stares blankly at Halan for a minute before turning to stare at its trainer. … Waterfall? But… The staryu is completely dumbfounded. It had just shown that there was no water to be summoned; how on earth is it supposed to create a waterfall of all things? Halan seems quite pleased at his opponents’ confusion, or perhaps it’s the fact that he isn’t confused or paralyzed for the moment – either way he runs towards Ruse, landing on the staryu and knocking it to the ground. The riolu begins to kick and punch furiously, screaming in anger as he releases all the pain he’s received during the battle back onto his opponent; as it had before, the attack leaves Ruse completely stunned, even more than it already was.

Halan kicks off Ruse and lands a short distance away, staring at it with relentless anger. Ruse slowly gets up off the platform, unable to return the riolu’s glare nor the damage he had inflicted – as once again, Ruse is left with inoperable commands. Fortunately for it, Halan finds himself losing sight of his opponent as his eyes blur and loud music takes over his mind. All he can hear is the sound of trumpets and drums playing, and bright lights dance before his eyes, distracting him. There’s no way he’d be able to pull off any sort of attack.

Ruse feels little comfort at this, as once again, it has no idea what to do. It’s growing used to this by now, even expecting it. Battles are just sitting around doing nothing and being confused, as far as it’s concerned. And Halan seems to share this perception, since his muscles are now the ones preventing him from moving. At least now he knows that he should be attacking and isn’t, which serves to anger him quite a bit. Whenever his paralyses lightens up, there’ll be hell to pay.
