Open My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic

Ember wrung her paws anxiously as Chrome approached the book. "Be careful..." She started to follow him slowly towards the ominous green glow, curiosity getting the best of her, but her curiosity instantly evaporated when Chrome attempted to lift the book and was blown back by a white beam of energy, and she sprung up into the air in fright.

Crash!

A bolt of lightning struck the book, setting the grass aflame and causing Ember to scurry away and dive behind Chrome, cowering and covering her head with her arms. "Putitoutputitoutputitout!"

~

Spike was on top of a ladder by the bookshelves, organizing some of Twlight Sparkle's books for her while she was reading a book of old spells. He was more focused on what he was doing than the spell she was actually working on it, though. Without warning, his concentration was broken by a series of cracks and pows coming from outside, causing him to flinch and drop the book he was holding. "What's going on out there?!"

Spike slid down the ladder and followed Twilight Sparkle to the window. "Look at all that smoke!" He leaned in towards the window and continued to watch it as Twilight turned around and started writing a note at the desk behind him. A couple moments later he felt a rolled up scroll hit the back of his head. "Agh!"

"Send this to Princess Celestia!" he heard Twilight Sparkle say, and he turned around and she was already out the door.

"Um, okay," he said to no one, picking up the scroll and blowing a green sparkling smoke across one end of it. The entire scroll turned into a glittering green cloud, twinkling its way through the air and following Twilight out the door to find its way to Princess Celestia.

Watching the dark cloud come closer, the young silver dragon glared intensely at it, her red eyes and light grayish fog glowing intensely. She would take a few steps backward but mostly held her distance, backing into one of the ponies behind her. It was odd that, despite the colors being different... dark gray and green for the ominous cloud, and light gray and red for the young dragon, the form of the two mists seemed to be oddly similar... perhaps both mysteries had a common theme?

As the dark cloud progressed closer to Ponyville, Pinkie took a step back. She felt the dragon bump into her. She turned around to Dinru, who had come running over to her and the dragon. She then looked at the dark blue pony and frowned at the both of them.

"Maybe we should go back to the bakery. We might need cover."

The black cloud began condensing over Ponyville, sending down questing tendrils of smoke, apparently looking for something. It encased a tree, and the tree appeared to wilt and sink away in only a few seconds. Suddenly, the cloud contracted and began racing down into Ponyville. It flew through the streets until it reached the bakery, then slowly began to for a dome over it, encasing it in an eerie, green light...

~

Twilight Sparkle reached the the spot where the smoke had seemed to rise and was surprised to see it was somepony she knew- Chrome, a pony that worked for the Ponyville Records department. They were casual friends.

"Chrome? What are you doing here? And what in Equestria is THAT?" she gestured up to the receding cloud in the sky.

"I don't know!" Chrome responded, getting shakily to his feet. "The book just fell open, and then that... thing came out!" Chrome looked around at the dragon who was still looking shakily at the book. "Are you alright?"

Twilight trotted over to the book and her horn began to glow. Immediately, Chrome ran over and yelled "No! Don't!"

Twilight stopped and looked over at Chrome. "Why not?"

"Trying to use magic on it last time... let's say it didn't end well." He gestured over at the patch of burnt grass. "Maybe I should just pick it up."

"No, I have a better idea!" said Twilight Sparkle, her horn glowing again. This time, the ground around the book seemed to pull away from the earth. Soon, the book was lying on a small patch of ground that was floating in mid-air. Twilight magicked the book over to Chrome and tipped it into his saddlebag. Chrome felt the book brush against his skin and he shuddered.

"I suppose the next thing we have to do is get to Ponyville" Chrome said. "Ember, hop on!"

Lili's eyes grew wide, and she jumped back in surprise.

"What sort of dark magic is that?!" She shrieked, before slamming the door to the bakery shut. There was no way that she would let that reach the other ponies inside. She waited for the ebony cloud to dissolve or disappear, but it didn't seem to be going away. She started to panic. Was Pinkie okay? What about her mother? Was she still asleep? She wanted to go home, to run to her mom and nuzzle up next to her. But she couldn't go out with that... thing... out there.

Meanwhile, Pinkie Pie started following the smoke. She didn't run after it, but seemed to follow it with her trademark bounce in her step. She wasn't afraid, but she was very curious. It seemed to be heading back to the bakery. When she arrived, she noticed the door was locked and shut.

"Lili? Are you in there?" She knocked twice with her hoof, though it seemed Lili didn't want to answer. She simply sat at the door, watching the black smoke swirl around her.

The dark blue pony watching at the pink pony disappeared, right behind the smoke. He didn't know what else to do, so he followed her.

As the dark smoke came in close, Starlight suddenly began to act even more oddly. She began to make very high pitched squawks and arcane sounds and scamper around frantically, very erratically, around the bakery as the smoke started to surround it. Then, Star leaped up on top of the whole building, following the black cloud. Tendrils of her own mist flew up at it, and the two 'clouds' of mist, one light and one dark, would start to mix and swirl together. Shrieks, almost painful screams would be able to be heard from the roof.

She still stood out there, staring at the smoke. And then... at that... thing. Arylett's suspicion towards the bizarre dragon was increasing. Her eyes followed it as it jumped onto the roof, also espousing mist...

...What if it was the source of the darkened shroud that had taken ahold of Ponyville?

The sounds it made were particularly disturbing... it had acted cutesy... it was trying to lure everyone into a trap! It all made sense. But now, what was she going to do? Oh dear... should she tell someone? No. Too much effort, that involves talking. Should she try to stop it?

...Hmm. First off, she couldn't fly. Secondly, what if she screwed something up? But she was the only one who knew that this thing was no good, she had seen it with her own eyes. And she wouldn't tell anybody. So... it was time to quit sitting around and DO something.

She closed her eyes, dropping her pencil and notebook as she focused all of her magical energy into her horn. A small red beam of light was aimed at the bizarre dragon, hoping she would hit it... but she knew she'd probably miss.

As most of her attention remained focused on the strange black smoke, the little hatchling was totally unprepared for what happened next...one of the ponies, one that she thought she was defending, suddenly betrayed her. A magical red beam flew up at her and suddenly pounded against the dragon's side, causing a small explosion of mostly steam. The hatchling gave a sudden high-pitched scream and fell down from the blast, landing on its other side. A little hole was blown in the dragon's skin, revealing not blood, but instead a hot, whitish fluid inside her, bubbling and facing upward toward the smoke. The young dragon laid motionless for a little while, groaning softly.

"Dragon? DRAGON!" Dinru watched the dragon fly away into the smoke, having no idea what was going on. "Dragon, don't go! You don't know what's... oh, forget it." She raced back and forth, trying to figure out what to do. She couldn't fly, she didn't have any magic, she really didn't have any skills to speak of except sleeping and befriending cute things. Speaking of cute things, she looked back at the dragon and noticed it was faintly glowing... and... bleeding? She then noticed that the glow matched the one coming from the horn of someone nearby. "What are you doing? You could hurt it!" Dinru yelled at the unicorn.

Arylett jumped in surprise at the yelling, accidentally blasting another magical shot in a random direction in shock. She looked at the darkly coloured pony, one of those who had trusted that little bugger... and blushed intensely. How was she going to explain this...? She'd probably sound like an idiot... now she didn't feel as certain... but... nobody else was doing anything, were they? Confidence, now.

"Well... I um... you see... I think that thing is what made the smoke appear." Great, now she sounded like an idiot.

The smoke shot down towards the small dragon lying injured on the ground beneath it. A small portion broke off from the whole and seemed to funnel into the dragon's wound. The white glow from inside seemed to darken and take on a greenish tinge for just an instant before the wound began to close. There was a sound like someone banging a metal drum and a familiar sickly green light shone from the place where the smoke entered the little dragon. Then, as if in response, the smoke around the bakery began sinking into the ground and sunlight slowly filtered back through onto the bakery.

~

The smoke was pleased. It had not expected to find the small dragon at the bakery- or anywhere, for that matter. The plan could proceed much more quickly now, and he had waited such a long time. He raced slithered through the underground cracks until he reached the limits of the everfree forest before rising out and billowing in among the trees.

~

Chrome, Twilight and Ember reached the bakery just in time to see the smoke receding. Chrome was shocked to see the small dragon he had seen earlier lying on its side, with a group of ponies looking around bewilderingly and blinking in the sunlight.

"What in Equestria happened here?" Chrome asked the group at large.

Twilight ran over to Pinkie Pie, asking "Is everypony okay?"

Dinru looked curiously at the unicorn. She was seething on the inside, but this pony looked intimidated and likely didn't mean any harm. It was kinda petty to be mad at someone just because they hurt a cute thing out of fear. So she just shrugged it off. "I dunno. Kinda looks like a baby, so I doubt it'd be capable of anything that big, though. I can't blame you either way. It might be coming from some other dragon though." She then smiled and said, "Don't worry, I was just worried about the dragon. It seems really nice to me, is all."

As the smoke cleared, all that remained on the roof of the bakery was the little dragon herself. She remained laying still on her back, and what remained of the wound was a small, almost black patch of new skin, almost looking as if it was burned or something. The rest of her skin, while not being as dark as the new skin, was darkened more than it used to be. Numerous moans and whines could be heard from the young dragon, sounding as if she was in some kind of agony. But at least the cloud was gone... maybe she had successfully fought it off?

"Someone tell me what's going on?"
Myst stared at the little dragon.
"What the hay....who did this?"

Her cupcake was delicious! She ate it slowly and carefully, trying not to stuff it down her face. By the time she was done, she dissapointedly realized that most of the people in the bakery had took off, Arylett included. I knew she hated me...

Silently putting the money for both the cupcakes on the counter (it was a really good cupcake, and she wasn't sure if the artistic unicorn had paid) she looked around. In the window she saw a terrible black smoke that was most likely the cause of the panic. She was scared, but decided that staying inside was the best idea at the moment.

Seeing the events that occured outside, from the possible... she didn't know what from Arylett, to the further suspicious actions by the dragon that almost proved that the pink unicorn was right in her suspicions, and then the smoke just leaving for some reason... needless to say, it left Snowflake very confused. She finally left the building, though, and walked out to the confused bunch of ponies and dragons. "...What exactly just happened?" she asked.

Lili jumped yet again when she heard the shrieks. What the heck was happening out there? But then another shout was heard. Someone was arguing outside! Reluctantly, she opened the door, and was almost trampled by Pinkie Pie.

"Ohmigawsh! Did you see that thing? Isn't it cool?" She rambled on even more, but Lili's eyes averted from her to the two ponies arguing.

"Both of you, come inside. It might be dangerous out there," she said, inviting them in. Then, after a sound like the beating of a drum, the smoke cleared. Lili hesitantly took a step outside and looked around. As she stared up at the sky, all she saw was the blue sky and a couple of weather ponies clearing a stray normal cloud.

Pinkie, meanwhile, trotted out to her friend, Twilight.

"Ayup yups! Everything here's peachy! At least, I think so."

"No! No it's not! I mean, we have no idea what just happened and why! It's definatly not okay, Pink!" Lili erupted, eyes narrowed. Sometimes she wondered how the other pink pony could be so complacent.

"Lili?"

The fuschia pony looked over, and gasped. Great. He was here. Lili looked upon her father, and tried to look cheerful.

"Hey Daddy! What're you doing here?"

Bruce gallopped over to his daughter, sniffing her.

"Are you hurt? Did that smoke get to you?"

"No, Dad, I'm - wait - Dad! I'm fine!"

Bruce had almost knocked her over while checking her to see if she was okay. He turned to the rest of the ponies.

"Now can someone explain what the hay happened?"

Ember uncovered one of her eyes when she heard Twilight Sparkle approach and start talking to Chrome about what just happened. "Are you alright?" She heard him ask.

"Y-Yeah, I'm fine... Looks like you're okay, too." She got up on her feet and dusted herself off, eyeing the book warily. Ember watched Twilight lift the book by manipulating the ground beneath it rather than the book itself, noting to herself how clever that was, and she wondered why Chrome hadn't thought of doing that earlier.

"Ember, hop on!" Chrome said, and with a nod Ember climbed up onto the unicorn's back, and the trio headed for Ponyville. Up ahead Ember could see the smoke wrapping itself around the bakery. By the time they arrived, though, the smoke had mysteriously vanished, which seemed to have left all the other ponies at the bakery afraid and confused, desperate to know what had just happened.

"Hnn... Too much excitement for one morning..." Ember sighed. She fell forward to rest on the back of Chrome's neck. Her arms hung limply and one of her paws brushed against Chrome's saddlebag, and she had an idea. "Hey, Chrome... I just realized, I haven't tried opening that book, have I?" She didn't wait for him to answer before she sat up again, and reached slowly into the saddlebag. She was afraid to touch it, but at the same time she really wanted to know what would happen if she did. She grabbed it and gingerly removed it from the bag, setting it on her lap. "Maybe it's just that ponies can't open it..."

Rainbow Dash has just lazing around in the sky when she saw a gathering of ponies near the bakery.
"What's happening down there?"
She dived down to take a look.
"What the hay? Update me. Now."

Things were getting a bit too confusing for her. There were all these ponies showing up all of a sudden... her heart was pounding from the excitement and anxiety. But she also saw that her actions caused the smoke to disappear... so she was right. It WAS the dragon that was the source of the smoke. She looked up at it, more for an excuse not to look at the other ponies than anything, and noticed it seemed... darker and was whining in pain.

Hmm... this, she had no idea if it was significant or not. But it didn't matter, the smoke was gone and she had saved the day! Right? Hopefully... she had never done anything like that before. It seemed that the others didn't understand, particularly the black pony.

"I really think it was this dragon... that caused all that. As soon as I hit it, it all disappeared. I... just because something's cute, doesn't mean you can trust it," Her tone was unusually cold, then she took her eyes away from the dragon and to Snowflake. "Tha... that is what happened. The smoke came, I hit it with magic. That dragon... and then everything stopped."

Rainbow Dash and Myst felt a wave of realization wash over them.

"Let's lock the dragon up,then!"
"Rainbow, you're too violent. Exile for the dragon!"
"....hypocrite."
