For what it's worth, it's about the same as telling someone "your hair is pretty" or "I like your shirt"

Sure, most people have them, but for most people it can be nice to hear.

Is that meaningless? That's more of a subjective thing, up to the person receiving said compliment imo
 
If the pokemon didn't like my compliments, they would let me know. Otherwise, I assume they like it.

Certainly I would argue as much. And complimenting an Abra's telekinesis is less like complimenting hair or clothes, which can at least theoretically be made to be aesthetically pleasing, and more like complimenting someone's opposable thumbs.
