• Welcome to The Cave of Dragonflies forums, where the smallest bugs live alongside the strongest dragons.

    Guests are not able to post messages or even read certain areas of the forums. Now, that's boring, don't you think? Registration, on the other hand, is simple, completely free of charge, and does not require you to give out any personal information at all. As soon as you register, you can take part in some of the happy fun things at the forums such as posting messages, voting in polls, sending private messages to people and being told that this is where we drink tea and eat cod.

    Of course I'm not forcing you to do anything if you don't want to, but seriously, what have you got to lose? Five seconds of your life?

  • Hi Hiikaru!! Ki I haven't felt like being on IRC lately should I just try! :c Also how are you!!
    Hi Ki! I'm poking you because I sent you a VM on January 25th as well and you only answered the PM. Please take a look at it! Thanks. :)

    Oh BTW I need to answer your PM from back then, will take a while though.
    About half an hour ago I dreamed that I found my Ruby version in my drawer. It was right in front of my other games. I was super-excited to PM you about it (because it was just that important), but then I woke up and I didn't have it anymore. :c
    Hello. Just wondering if you forgot about my battle against Eifie.

    Sorry if it sounds rude. If it did, I didn't meant to.
    Hi Ki, what's up, how have you been?

    I took a break from writing the novel, but I'm still "on it". I often think about characters, and scenes... I think I should put more things into the screen and stop thinking so much about them!

    The beauty of editing is that you are your own author and critic. People change from hour to hour even so the critic me is not the same as the author me, and I can see things that I didn't see when I was writing. I'm not sure that a complete rewrite is necessary, but it's certainly less limiting, because you start with a blank paper. Making amendments to something which already exists is actually harder.

    I think that overly flowery language may or may not be boring but I'm biased against it. I have a degree in law and in the field I work in everyone seems to make an extra effort to sound flowery and use "common expressions" and so on. I find it to be simply ridiculous. There is formal language and there's excessively formal language that leads nowhere.

    I have a few questions I'd like to ask you. At the moment, I'm writing the story "from start to end", not really because I wanted to but because the story started as a challenge my therapist set to me. I told her I created characters that were sort of "alter egos" of myself and she told me to drop it and write, so that me and my characters would become distinct entities. The question is in which order do you prefer to write your stories? I know that in NaNo for example it might be bette to adopt a linear approach, but what about when doing it without these self-imposed limits? I remember hearing that JK Rowling already had the ending to Harry Potter planned and written before the books were even published, while others might prefer the linear approach. I also ask this because my story is divided into two parts, the one in which the protagonist is a child and the one in which she's a late teenager, and I find it more satisfying to write scenes that relate to the second part.

    The other question is about the ultimate villain in my story. Ey's supposed to be a really strong vampire with the ability to insert painful hallucinations in the minds of the opponents but I haven't decided the specifics yet. I thought about the villain being an old man, a really cruel teenager, a woman with masculine traits (to contrast with the protagonist). This is a character which I'm a bit lost with. Ey might not even be much necessary at all because there's another villain the protagonist has much more contact with, but I think ey might be a nice addition to the cast. I'd like to hear some suggestions from you. :)

    BTW you answered my VM but I also sent you a PM back then, be sure to check it out if you have the time!
    Shit shit shit

    I forgot about that entirely. It was definitely yours, I'll clarify and get it up asap
    This made my whole day. I've been wallowing in a most horrendous pit of self-pity, thinking my writings and scribblings far too terrible to continue. This post, however, has convinced me to try again. Thank you. :3
    If, hypothetically, one were to buy you a Mienfoo, which sex and ability would you hypothetically want :o
    Colorful things and codes make everything better <3

    I've recently started putting more of my graphics and stuff up on my website... I used to be super paranoid about theft of them, but I've gotten much more relaxed about it, so I figured it'd be a nice place to put them. So I'm not really doing much in the way of coding, but it sure is fun updating and seeing more images on a page haha!

    I've been thinking about doing something in Microsoft Excel, too, as far as homework pages go. I've been learning how to use functions and stuff in Excel, so it's been fun calculating my class grades and stuff in it =D I've also been thinking about making a spreadsheet for my college loans and stuff... it'd be a nice way to keep better track of things; I have such a hard time keeping all of that straight. xD;

    Oh, and that's okay; I respond late to things all the time... xD;
    About starting over: I'm EXTREMELY lazy! I don't think you've met a lazier person! :D So the idea of rewriting everything from scratch doesn't appeal to me at all. This also has to do with the way my mind works: somehow I feel that, if you're going to rewrite, the scene must be structured differently. For me to make it worth rewriting something there has to be some difference, a tiny detail perhaps? Although it's true that you can write the same thing with different words, if you know enough words.

    I usually feel inspired to create my story after watching shows and reading books, because it makes me want to make my characters exist as well as the ones in the shows and books. The main reason I'm writing my novel is that I want it and its characters to exist, not really to tell a story.

    I too like concise language over flowery, but I'm under the impression that many people value a work according to how flowery (and, in scientific case, how hard to read) it is. IMO you only need just the right amount of detail to immerse the reader in the story, not more, not less. I've seen in a forum years ago a collection of writings of the same scene written from the perspective of Tolkien, Akira Toriyama and others (of course it was a parody but you get the idea). The Tolkien one was really painful to read because of how descriptive it was!

    Learning to accept my mistakes is a never-ending process for me. I'm terribly afraid of them, in all areas. I've been an honour student in pretty much every institution I've studied so I learned that I need to be the best at everything and nothing is worth it if I don't always give it my best shot. This idea is severely limiting. But I'm trying to overcome this fear and, I must say, you've been a good influence on me concerning this subject.
    I had a good laugh when you wrote that people are exciting! :D I have a relationship of love and hate with people. Sometimes when I see people in an unusual situation (like old people working at McDonald's, for instance) I feel like talking to the person to find out what happened so that ey (very useful, these neutral pronouns!) ended up there. Other times, I can't get to terms with people. Perhaps this is why my protagonists are all antisocial and my villains love to step on others...

    I'll reply to everything you wrote to me later. I'll say in advance that I really enjoy reading your advice!
    Hey, thanks for your response on my Coughing Cupboard post! I really appreciate it, and you always have such nice advice =)

    I really like the homework page idea! I'm going to try that next semester; that should be a great way to use my HTML knowledge that I've been laying in the dust lately... xD;

    Thanks again =)
