It was a fine day in ASB Central, the sky virtually cloudless and the air warm and still. The great city was unnaturally silent, though, skyscrapers built to house hundreds of offices sitting largely empty and the streets devoid of more than a few travelers. This far out from the city center, towards the southern tip of the place, the emptiness was a bit less apparent, but with only the soft sounds of pokémon moving about to break the silence, it was a bit eerie.

Before you was a small building adjoining a modest paddock in which flying-type pokémon of all sorts wandered or rested. Altaria and pidgeot roosted on long bars that had been set up for that purpose, and a charizard was giving itself a good cleaning, blowing flame along its scaly body to burn off dirt. All the pokémon in the yard wore harnesses, and a couple of human trainers wandered between them, loading mail and packages onto some, grooming or feeding others.

The booth, which was open to the street and housed one bored-looking teenage attendant, had a large sign posted next to the ticket window that read:

"Outer Reaches Transportation

Round-Trip Tickets

Plains and Beach Outposts: $3
Shore and Mountain Outposts: $5
Lonely Outpost: $10

Ask about our package and message delivery services!"

(( Many apologies for the delay. ))

Actually, I think I'll be cheap and just walk to the vicinity of the Plains outpost, since it seems fairly close judging by the price. If I meet any pokémon on the way, I'll quickscan them.

((I don't mind terribly about the delay. There are more important things to do, after all.))

As you shout your orders to Nidoran, she blinks hard and manages to understand what you say. Nodding sleepily, she turns back to her opponent, trying to ignore the pretty-pretty lights.

Closing her eyes, Nidoran attempts to calm down and focus. Lights still dance through her eyelids, but Nidoran manages to prevent their influence for a moment.

Unluckily, the Ralts has an idea. As soon as your Pokémon shuts her eyes, he bends down and sneaks over into the shade of an awning, sneaking through the shadows. Ralts has soon made his way to behind Nidoran, his right fist glowing with a translucent glowing energy. Rapping his knuckles hard against your Nidoran's back, Ralts leaps back before she can realize what has happened.

The attack has managed to crumble your Pokémon's already fragile concentration, and as she whirls around to find the source of the attack, her eyes catch the sparkling, golden, pretty-pretty lights.

Transfixed, she stares at the dazzling lightshow, wobbling from side to side. But somehow, Nidoran musters up the will to remember your command. Tearing her gaze from the beautiful orbs of light, your Pokémon opens her mouth and lets out a higher-than-humanly-possible screech. It barely registers in your range of hearing, but the Ralts can clearly comprehend the noise. Sticking his skinny arms under his helmet, presumably to cover up whatever orafice a Ralts uses to hear, your opponent, wobbling a bit, nevertheless sends out a wave of psychic energy, which forms a glowing, insane-looking face, which leers at your Pokémon, who squeals and immediately stops her attack.

The Supersonic appears to have hit its mark, however, as both Nidoran and her enemy stumble around quite drunkedly, the Ralts notably less so.

I'll tell her to stay still and use Focus Energy again. When she's less confused, I'll have her use Growl.

Going to get kicked off this computer shortly, but let's see if I can get any done.

As you passed, the gulpin let out a loud belch and regurgitated what looked like an empty pop can. Nothing more of note happened before the trees closed in around you, casting you in deep, cool shadow. The city rapidly disappeared from view as you traveled deeper into the trees, birdsong from above and the buzz of insects from all directions providing background noise. Over these, though, you could hear the sound of water running in the distance--the river, presumably.

Following along the dirt path would take you ever deeper into the woods, but the only pokemon that was readily apparent was a paras hiding in a cluster of vibrantly-colored mushrooms, its mandibles working away at empty air. The sound of water grew louder, though the river was not yet in sight; people wanting to unload goods for ASB Central at the dock apparently had to haul them a good ways through the trees before they would reach the city.

"Ready to go?" Josh asked as Coulomb was recalled, his face lighting up as it became clear that the answer was yes. The two of you strolled back towards ASB Central, although Josh seemed to be trying to push the pace up a bit as you went along. Nevertheless, he was paying enough attention to his surroundings that he was able to spot a pokemon lurking high above your heads.

"Cool, never seen one of those before," Josh said, pointing up at a shuppet lurking up below the eaves of a tall building on the edge of the business district. The ghost type was only just visible in the shadows, yellow eyes glowing slightly. According to your pokedex, it was male and level four.

The nurse puts aside her magazine and considers your question for a moment, biting her lower lip. "Well, the Plains Outpost is north of here, but I'm not really sure how long it would take to fly there. It depends on what sort of pokemon you're going to be flying on, really... I'd say a pidgeot would probably take around forty minutes to get there, if it was fairly newly-evolved. I can't say for sure, though."

Prettzel

(( Just FYI, there's a whole zone (forest) lying between you and the Plains; walking there would take quite some time. ))

Your trip to the plains was presented with an early difficulty as you realized that you didn't actually know how to get to them from where you were. It was a nice day, though; you could afford to take a random stab. Setting out along the street you were currently on, you followed it as far as you could, out into the fringe of ASB Central. Judging by the sun, you were headed east.

The trip was largely uneventful, though at one point you did pass an alleyway that radiated a strong, putrid odor. At the very end of the road, though, where the concrete gave way to grass and weeds, you found yourself facing, not endless stretches of empty plains, but rather a large, dense forest.

Nidoran tries to focus her mind towards the battle, and the illusionary balls of light disappear. However, the Ralts takes a step forward to attack, but trips in its own confusion.

Nidoran, happy at this, lets out a soft growl, which slightly discourages Ralts from attacking her. However the Ralts forms a small ball of blue flames, which then begins to float slowly towards Nidoran, in an erratic fashion. Nidoran easily side-steps the attack which makes the Ralts angrier.

Ralts looks fit enough to keep this going, while still swaying a little dizzily. Nidoran look eager to continue looking slightly better than Ralts.

Okay, I'll continue to the Pokemon Centre without bothering about any other Pokemon. Once, I get there, I'll heal Coulomb, Gaia, and Atahensic (my Swablu).

I'll keep going toward the river.

Cool. I'll thank the nurse, head outside and release Scarlet Fever; then I'll climb onto her back and we'll start flying north until the landscape below starts looking a bit more plainsish. If we run into any Pokémon flying by as we go, I'll quickscan them.

Ignoring the Shuppet, the two of you finally reach the city. Within minutes, you've entered teh Pokemon center, and the nurse eagerly heals your Pokemon while doing a little jig. Josh follows with his Pokemon, and, after pocketing the Pokeballs, grins.

"Well, thanks for that. I'll see you around." He says, before turning to leave.

As you round the next bend in the path, you find yourself at the river. This particular section is rather wide, and the flow is gentle. Across the river, on the opposite bank, a teenaged girl is attempting to capture a Surskitt with her Tailow. She barely spares you a glance, before her Tailow strikes the Surskit into a patch of reeds. She chucks a Pokeball into the clump, and wades into the water to grab it before it can dislodge itself from the plants and float downsteam.

On your side of the river, a snoozing Bidoof has curled up on a rock for some relaxation, apparently oblivious to the battle across the stretch of running water. Within the actual river, a few Lotads bob around the shoreline. Other than that, there doesn't appear to be anything within this area. Perhaps you should roll up your pant legs and do a little wading...

"Your welcome! Come back anytime." The nurse says after you thank her. With that, you proceed to leave the center, and find a convienent empty lot of land right across the street. Entering it, you toss the Pokeball containing Scarlet Fever, with inspires a few passerbies to stop and gawk as you mount her.

Within moments, your flying northwards, rising over the city and swerving around large buildings. Hmm...a few people in that one office building are giving you funny looks...Regardless, you soon pass over the city limits, and continue northwards. It should be a while...and, while you fly, you can't help but notice a small flock of Wingulls wheeling above the landscape. Quick scanning them, you find a mix of male and females, all level 4.

Loading the items within my pack, I leave the mart with a quick "Thank you." Afterwards, I'll wander around town and try and see if I can find a community bulliten board or something of the sort.

I'll stop him before he can leave, and ask him where he's going. If he's going to the beach outpost, I'll suggest using the transport service to fly there and we can head there, if he isn't I'll suggest that we keep in touch via Pokedex mail.

If Josh isn't going with me, then I'll go to the transport service myself.

Right before Josh walks away, you call his name to catch his attention. He jumps a little, but slowly turns around and smiles.

"Yeah?" he asks, glancing at his watch.

"Where are you going?" you ask curiously, rummaging in your pocket for your Pokédex.

"Err, I was going to head over to the Pokémart," Josh says, not making eye contact. "Umm, why do you ask?"

"Oh, well, I was wondering if you were going to the Beach Outpost. But, if you're not, could you give me your e-mail address so that we could keep in touch?" you ask, finally extracting your Pokédex from your pocket.

"Oh, umm, sure, why not, right?" Josh says, hastily grabbing your device. Keying in several digits, Josh hands the Pokédex back to you, grabs his backpack, and dashes away without saying goodbye.

Confused and wondering why he didn't ask for your e-mail, you almost go after the boy, but soon you lose sight of him behind a passing black van. Sighing to youself, you turn around and start walking down the sidewalk.

After strolling down the nearly-empty walkways of ASB Central for several minutes, you reach the near-outskirts of the city. There, you soon find the building that is your destination. You see a sign which proclaims the following:

Outer Reaches Transportation

Round-Trip Tickets

Plains and Beach Outposts: $3
Shore and Mountain Outposts: $5
Lonely Outpost: $10 maybe the outpost should get a girlfriend! haha

Kratos, Rider of the Wyrm of Scarlet

You continue flying due north, ignoring the Wingull that have inexplicably found themselves above a forest.

After a while, the trees start to thin slightly. If you squint, you can just make out the small band of light green on the horizon that signifies the Plains.

Scarlet Fever let's out a roar, causing several Pidgey to fly out of the trees below. A quickscan reveals:

Several Pidgey, level 3. One Pidgey, level 9.

Following the path on into the trees, you would soon find what sounds of the city there were falling far behind you, and the air almost chill, the air several degrees lower beneath the cover of the trees than it had been in the open air. Just to the side of the path, which was little more than a scuffed track in the leaf litter, a stunky was rooting through what looked like somebody's brown lunch bag, lying abandoned on the forest floor. A paras watched from a distance, big claws stirring idly in the dirt. According to your pokedex, these were level three and female and level two and male, respectively.

Animorph

The Mart attendant bade you farewell, and you stepped out into the sunlight once more.

As it turned out, finding a community bulletin board wouldn't be hard at all. Working your way in towards the center of the city, you'd find at its heart the looming Holo-Dome, and staked out in front of it, a large kiosk with ample corkboard available for people to post messages and fliers. A quick glance at some of the more prominent ones on top revealed an advertisement for a new restaurant that had just opened in town, a notice about a lost meowth, and a bulletin about job positions being offered to trainers by the Asber Exploration Agency.

There were more people milling around here than you had seen elsewhere in the city so far, though most were just interested in the Holo-Dome itself, it being the city's main attraction. An electronic scrolling sign just below the curved rim of its roof ran a constant news ticker with updates about the battles going on inside. On top of the kiosk a fat pidgey sat sunning itself, looking thoroughly unafraid of you as you approached.

Kratos Aurion

The fringe of trees slid away below you, giving way to open plains. In the distance, water glinted, a broad band stretched out across the horizon. A small smudge between you and the lake probably marked the area's outpost. With your direction, Scarlet Fever angled down towards the grass and came in for a smooth landing, the explosive force of her backwinging blowing the long grass about in disarray.

The appearance of a large, red salamence and rider seemed to have scared most wild pokemon out of the area--and who could blame them? A quick eye would spot a pair of sentret-ears sliding down and out of sight not too far away to your right, though, and the pokedex cut through the barrier of grass between the two of you to inform you that the little pokemon was level two and female.

Kusarigamaitachi

As you begin to walk down the stream, the girl who had captured the surskit returned to shore and began to move upstream, into the blank and tangled woods. Keeping close to the water's edge, you saw a magikarp jump and fall back into the swiftly-moving river with a pathetic plop. A poliwag, startled by your footsteps, slid from its spot on the bank and into the water, big tailfin working to shoot it out towards the middle of the water. These were level eight and male and level four and female, respectively.

The going was becoming harder--no real path to follow here, and the trees pushed right up to the edge of the river, their roots sometimes clutching at empty air where sod had eroded right out from around them. And, presently, your path was decisively blocked--by a toxicroak, leaning up against a tree trunk and looking out over the water in a casual pose. Your pokedex told you that this one was male and level thirty-seven.

Grass King

A bored-looking teenage girl, holed up behind the counter of the transportation office with a few magazines, glanced up at your money with reluctance. Taking it from you, she rummaged in a drawer below the counter before coming up with a ratty yellow ticket. "Take this around back and show it to Greg," she said, flicking it across the counter at you.

"Out back" was, in fact, a kind of paddock full of all manner of flying pokemon, from pidgey on up to fearow and charizard. A couple were batting an old basketball back and forth between them, while most dozed either on the grass or on a line of perches set up for them to rest upon. A teenage boy, presumably Greg, was adjusting a harness on a pidgeot as you entered the yard. Most of the pokemon took an interest in you, and Greg himself looked up.

"Oh, hey. Going somewhere?" he asked, and when you showed him the ticket, he smiled. "Beach, huh. No problem. Just hang on a moment while I get rid of Hermes here." A couple more seconds of fiddling with the pokemon's harness, and he gave the pidgeot a firm slap on the back and stepped back as it took off with a whirr of wings.

"All right, let's see what we've got here," Greg muttered, glancing around at the pokemon arrayed before him. "All right, you can take old Titan there," he decided at last, pointing out a charizard lounging in a far corner of the paddock. The fire type raised its snout without too much interest, but at Greg's bidding hauled itself up and ambled over to see you. "Climb right up, and I'll take that ticket, thanks," Greg said, giving you a hand up onto the charizard's broad back. Like all other pokemon in the yard, it is wearing a harness, and Greg points out where you should hang on. You don't have a lot of time to take in this information before Titan leaps into the air, climbing steeply until the air is biting cold and ASB Central lies far below you. Banking around, Titan takes off south, towards the forest and, presumably, the beach beyond.

Myself, Repost

Evan slouched along the sidewalk, passionately despising the warm weather and sunny day. His sweatshirt was stifling and already starting to stick to him--not, of course, that he'd be taking it off under any circumstances. If anything was going to change in this scenario, it was going to be the weather, not him.

If there was one thing he was grateful for, however, it was that so few people were about. He hated interacting with them in any case, and if there was no one around while he got to know his new pokémon, so much the better. It was this that was on his mind when a particularly foul smell intruded on his musings. Coming to a halt, he peered in direction of the scent, grimacing with disgust. So far as he knew, there was only one thing that would put out a stench that foul in a city like this; and indeed, there they were, two grimer scrabbling the garbage.

For a moment, Evan stood where he was, just watching. Grimer weren't bad; the smell was a bit of a turn-off, but it could be an advantage if used properly. One way or another, this looked like the perfect opportunity to test out his new pokémon--or one of them, at least. Reaching into one of his pants pockets, he pulled out a minimized pokéball and flicked it to the pavement. "Let's go, Slugma."

One burst of light later, the slugma turned back and gave him a lazy look. "Yeah, hello to you, too," Evan said to it, deciding immediately that he didn't like its attitude. "Get over there and use... use, damn, uh..." Rummaging in his pockets again, Evan came up with his pokédex and turned it on the slugma. "Heat wave, yeah. Attack those grimer." He pointed into the alley without much interest, then glanced around to see if there were any other people in the vicinity.

Nidoran shoots towards the Ralts, slamming her body into it. Ralts prepares to counterattack, but stumbles and trips over. Ralts quickly pulls itself up, but it appears that its mind has become clear.

Before Nidoran can attack again, the Ralts ducks into the shadows. It suddenly reappears behind Nidoran, and strikes her with ghostly energy. She recomposes herself, and once again darts towards the Ralts, and slams her body into it again.

Nidoran still seems to be in a decent fighting condition, but the Ralts appears to be holding its arm. Both Pokemon are breathing at a steady rate.

Guess that's understandable; probably won't be anything of Scarlet's caliber until I venture further in anyway. Well, if she's scaring everything away then I'll just recall her and release Kratos and Schrödinger instead, and then we'll head in the general direction of that water.
