I don't think "if it works in the anime it works irl" is very true on most things

Well, no, but in this case I think the logic holds. There's two possible situations: That its reality would be exactly like the anime, or that its reality would not be exactly like the anime. In the former case, it demonstrably can move. In the latter case, there's no reason to presume it having knees couldn't be one of the changes. Either way there's no reason to condemn the poor thing to a life of awkward shuffling.
