The Sex Industry and Prostitution

well... again, you're not in that position. you couldn't say. even if you know yourself, if you've never been in a position where you would need to do n your attitude or whatever might change a little. you might end up doing something you never though you would do.
Random fact - I've stated that my preferred method of dying is either by starvation or snake bite. You could lock me in a cell for 5 days with no food and water, then send someone in to make the offer. I'd do one of four things.

-Cannibalize the person.
-Kill or severely hurt the person out of spite for putting me in there and not bringing me food.
-Take the person hostage in exchange for food.
-Just sleep with the person (to see what it's like) before I die.

Actually, any one of those outcomes could be in tandem with another. ,xP
I agree that survival instincts will usually push people to crazy limits, but I know what I would and wouldn't do; I don't care if i've been in that situation or not.

That is... horrible. Prostitution is (the vast majority of the time) a horrific, terrible job and I feel absolutely nothing but pity for those poor people who honestly have no other way of getting money. There's a special kind of desperation when someone reaches the point where they'll let people pay to violate their body (I say 'violate' because I can't think of a better word; if someone consents to sex it's not rape, but if someone consents but still doesn't want it, I'm of the belief that it can still be as traumatising); and it's not possible for you to say "I still wouldn't do what they're doing" because you have absolutely no idea what it's like.
It's not always about starving people having sex for food money.. This is essencialy a "Sex Industry" thread, meaning that we're talking about prostitution for the sake of having a few extra (almost wrote sextra ><;) dollars.

You can feel sorry for them if they're starving to death, sure.. But there's always another way, they just happened to pick this one.. I have no idea what letting someone violate my body is like? or what starvation is like?

I know what it's like to starve, I don't know what it's like to let someone violate your body. but I do know that it's probably very traumatizing and demeaning, so I wouldn't do it. - I have too much respect for myself and my body.

Sorry, but what's the difference? Prostitution is still Prostitution whether it's done out of desperation or enjoyment.

Yeah, well.. I wouldn't. and seeing how I can't prove it, and that no one else can prove me wrong. I'm not gonna bother talking about it anymore. <3

Um.. there's a huge difference between someone subjecting themself to sex (which they don't want) in order to survive, and someone subjecting themself to sex for the sake of extra money and "enjoyment" (which they're absolutely fine with).

Very, VERY big difference.

I was just pointing out that this thread refers to the ones that do it for extra money/enjoyment, and not so much the ones that do it as a means to survive. - and therefore, I don't see any reason for anyone to feel pity for them.

Mmm. In a perfect world, it would be easy to guarantee protection from pregnancy and STDs, sex would be strictly pleasurable, and prostitution would be like any other job - a service you can offer for money as a living.

However, in practice, it just isn't like that. A lot of STDs are incurable and even potentially lethal, and condoms are not only imperfect but also undesirable for clients, leading to a pressure towards not using them despite the risk of contracting STDs. Prostitution is looked down upon as a desperate and filthy job. If you do get pregnant and don't get an abortion for any of the many reasons there could be for that, the child could have to suffer abuse as well. Most people want sexual fidelity from their partners, making it next to impossible for a prostitute to get into an actual, loving relationship. Sex can easily be painful, though I suppose you can build up a resistance to that. Clients frequently treat prostitutes like crap and abuse them generally. In general, it's a terrible job that I really can't see a person choosing to do unless they're very desperate or very disturbed.

So therefore, as things stand today I don't think prostitution should be legalized, though in principle I don't really think there is anything wrong with paying for sex. If STDs and possible pregnancy were out of the picture, there were regulations to provide prostitutes with good protection and ensure their being treated with the respect reserved for any other job, and the social stigma disappeared - basically, if it became something a bit more towards Companions in Firefly, if less fancy - I'd be more than fine with it.

Sex toys, porn and so on I'm perfectly fine with.

...I know that there is that difference, but that's not what I meant. What I meant is why should either be overlooked? It's still prostitution. Nobody in this thread has specifically stated 'what this thread refers to' other than you or Harle, who started the thread:
What are your opinions on the sex industry (toys, images, video) and prostitution (paying for sex)?
- it doesn't say only people who enjoy it or anything.
Also who cares that you see no reason for anyone to feel pity for them. Don't try and change the discussion because you're getting burned, it's stupid.

I'm not getting burned, you're just making no sense rofl.

See I have no idea why you're saying that. I didn't actually say one should be overlooked, I was saying you shouldn't feel sorry for someone if they're doing something they're perfectly happy doing; Also, I was just pointing out that the industry itself doesn't have starving people having sex for a means to survive in it. If we had that in our country, don't you think the government would crack down on it within a matter of weeks? - It goes against human rights, but I suppose that differs between countries.

To me the term "sex industry" just doesn't outline people who are desperate enough to have sex (against their own will) in order to stay alive. How can you even consider it to be commercial? It's like the radio/TV going "starving people who need your money to survive ready to fulfill all of your sexual fantasies!" - at least half of any civilized country would find that sick and do something about it.

They're the ones not making sense? You just proved in this very same post you have no clue what you're talking about.

Fair enough, but there aren't that many people that do it because they like it, considering the average conditions and risks.

You have absolutely no idea.

It's an industry; they're making money off it, and whether or not their very life depends on making that little amount of money is irrelevant in the definition.

I know what i'm talking about, whether or not it's relevant depends entirely on how much sense I can make from whoever i'm quoting.

Trust me, there's a lot out there that are fine with it and just want the extra money. Maybe half of them don't consider the risks and conditions, because I think you'd have to be bloody crazy to do it other than a means to survive.
You have absolutely no idea.
Whatever you say.

Does everyone else here consider starving people who have to resort to prostitution as a means to survive, a part of the sex industry, as a whole?

If everyone else agrees with you then i'll shut up about it.

Edit:
what exactly is the debate about here, can anyone enlighten me?
To be completely honest, they're confusing the hell out of me. ,xP

It's about: Whether or not people who have to resort to prostitution as a means to survive, are pitted into the same group as people who resort to prostitution for the hell of it, which is viewed as "the sex industry" overall.

The first do it (against their will/better judgement), because they have no money/food, so to speak. The latter do it because I suppose they like the money. One appeals to me as "commercial enterprise" the other does not. Those are my views.

You can be part of an industry without enjoying it, can't you? I don't see how prostitutes who do it out of desperation are not somehow part of the industry; it's still money, they're still prostitutes.

I don't get it. I know he's banned now but he's probably kurking. I don't get why someone who hates it and is doing it as a last resort isn't part of the industry. If I'm a plumber and I absolutely hate it but still do it, I don't stop being part of the industry...

if you don't mind me asking, why was he banned? other than being just infuriatingly obnoxious, was there any reason?

Maybe it's just me, and maybe I'm a dick, but I think the whole "infuriatingly obnoxious" thing was reason enough to ban him.

It was not by any means just you.

What is so bad about prostitution? Why is even illegal? I mean, im not saying i cruise the streets looking for hookers, but why illegalize it?
