We're taught you can use any kind of English spelling as long as you're consistent. If you use American rules it's fine but you have to consistently use them. Most people here use British spelling afaik

I never understood how petrol can be gas, and then every gas is also gas.

Also, annoyingly most of the non-English speaking world learn American English pronunciation and more often than not, words. At least, non-European non-English speaking (tongue twister?) :/

Like all the Engrish you see, if there's an opportunity, usually American English will be there, and in Japan they learn American pronunciation. Which is pretty stupid because British pronunciation would be so much easier for all the Japanese kiddies. D:

As many substances as there are in the universe. Gas is just an overhead term for the physical aggregate. Petrol is gas under certain circumstances, depending on the contents of the petrol (amount of octane etc etc), oxygen is a gas at standard conditions (298 K / 1 atm), etc. etc. Using gas as a word for petrol basically just means you're either administering the fuel as a gas, or it's short for gasoline which is a lol word.

Gasoline is just a shit term anyway.
