All-time top 5 video games

In no particular order:

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64)
Paper Mario (N64)
Chrono Trigger (SNES/PSX/DS)
Suikoden Tierkreis (DS)
Pokemon Diamond (DS)

Honorable mentions:

Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii)
Animal Crossing (NGC)
Mario Kart 64 (N64)
Pokemon Soul Silver (DS)
Dragon Quest VIII (PS2)

and many, many more!

I actually can't do this by game, so I'm going to be a failure and go by series and name my favourite of each.

1. Pokemon main series (Ruby)
2. Ace Attorney series (Justice for All)
3. Tales of series (Symphonia)
4. Final Fantasy series (X)
5. Disgaea series (Hour of Darkness)

I love the Metal Gear Solid, Super Smash Bros., WarioWare, Resident Evil, Super Mario, MarioKart, and (hahaha) SingStar games, too.

Dammit, I've had TWEWY for months and haven't gotten around to playing it. I should get on that.

You should! :D It's brilliant.

I didn't think of doing mine by series... it'd probably look a lot different if I did:

1. Final Fantasy (VII)
2. Pokemon (Sapphire)
3. Ace Attorney (Apollo Justice or T&T)
4. Persona (4)
5. Rayman (2... or 3... gah, can't decide at all)

<3 Rayman needs more love, it really is a good series (and I've never played Raving Rabbids, though it really doesn't look like my thing)

1. INFamous (PS3)
2. Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm (PS3)
3. Pokemon Leaf Green (GBA)
4. Pokemon Heart Gold (DS)
5. COD: Modern Warfare 2 (PS3)

in no order. list is entirely subjective and mostly comes down to total hours clocked. also, because I'm not really much of a gamer these days, this list mostly caters to fond childhood memories.

1. Pokemon Emerald (GBA)
yeah I've got over 300 hours on this. from an objective viewpoint it's probably not the best in series, but it's got lots of happy memories for me and it's the cartridge with the highest % of Pokedex completion of any of my games.

2. Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn (Wii)
I'm currently on my forth replay. this is a pretty long game and has a great route-swapping storyline that I like. it's also got great music and fairly decent animation (at least compared to the previous game). oh, and the gameplay is slicker than most entries in the series.

3. Super Robot Wars: Original Generation 1 (GBA)
including the remake on the PS2, I've played this game about three times. it's highly underrated and has lots of giant robot fun. what sets it apart is that everything in the game is highly customizable - which pilots are assigned to which mechs, stat growths, weapon sets, etc. objectively, the remake is probably better (it has a greater variety of playable mechs, more theme music, vastly better graphics AND voice acting) but lacks an English translation and is also a hassle to run on a modded console.

4. Deus Ex (PS2)
this one has only had one playthrough, but it's so good that it gets on the list. I'm normally pretty crap at FPSes but Deus Ex has a good storyline with a tense, claustrophobic feel. it's not hard, but it does force you to be quite methodical - unlike other games, you can't really run and shoot stuff. you have to plan, be a little stealthy (although not in a boring, contrived way like other games). PC elitists will tell me that their version is better, and they're probably right. my limited experience playing Counterstrike on other peoples' machines tells me that the mouse IS better for FPSes. problem is, my computer is old and crappy and it's guaranteed not to work.

5. Age of Empires II (PC)
includes the later expansion pack. looking back, this game was quite cheesy. regardless, I must've spent months of my childhood playing this. it satisfied my maniacal wargame cravings AND my interest in history (although lol video games as a reliable historical reference, AoE games are actually pretty informative and often faithful to real life!). seeing as I'm going to be applying to read History at uni next year, I should probably give a shout out to this game for fostering my interest!

Honourable Mentions
Pokemon Gold (GBC)
Final Fantasy: Dawn of Souls (GBA)
Fire Emblem (GBA)
Ratchet and Clank 2 (PS2)
Star Wars: Battlefront 2 (PS2)

2} Pokémon Heart Gold {DS}

Okay um guys, the Pokemon series is pretty awesome, but if your top-5 list is full of nothing but them, it may be time to broaden your horizon a bit.

Well, I have too many games I like to consider favorites, so this is just a list of five really good games that come to mind quickly (no particular order). It's probably not my actual top-5 favorite list, because I'm like that, but.

- Half-Life 2 (and episodes)
- Team Fortress 2
- Super Mario World
- Pokemon Silver (Gold would work too, but I got Silver so let's go with that)
- Kirby 64

In no particular order:

Kingdom Hearts II (PS2)
Final Fantasy IX (PS1)
Rayman (PS1)
Banjo-Kazooie (N64)
The Ace Attorney series in general except JFA (DS).

If I could think of all the awesome games I've played at the moment, I'd probably need a top 55 list, so these will do for now :v

mine are probably...

-chrono trigger
-persona 3 FES
-xenogears
-xenosaga episode III: also sprach zarathustra
-astro boy omega factor

1) The Legend of Spyro: The Dawn of the Dragon

You sire, have good taste in RPGs. Chrono Trigger and Xenogears in the same list is approved.

hehe.. i enjoy RPGs because of their emphasis on storytelling, really - i love a good story. so it's very frustrating that a lot of RPGs have either cookie cutter stories (like tales of symphonia) or are just flat out boring (like some final fantasy installments). but when a story is just great, like the two you mentioned, as well as xenosaga and the like, i am deeply enthralled.

i remember the main reason i got so far in xenogears - you know how long it takes before you finally get to disc 2 - was because a "friend" of mine bullied me into playing the fucking game so far along. the way he insisted i play it, i didn't enjoy it so much at first. as i got further in the game, though, i stopped caring that some miscellaneous person and took it for what it was - a thoroughly compelling sci-fi RPG with heavy psychological and philosophical bents to it, with an involved, lifelike cast and filmlike conflicts (though they were very involved and demanded lots of attention, else people would probably just dismiss the plot as convoluted and nonsensical). i really did feel for the characters in xenogears more than the cast of any other game, because the writers put so much thought into fleshing them all out. it's dated pretty badly, from a technical standpoint, but even playing it seven or eight years after it originally came out, i still find the plot and characters so convincing and enthralling, engrish and all.

sorry to gush. i just love the game to bits. i thought it was such a chore until after the castle mishap thing (sorry.. i haven't played the game in like, four years) at the VERY beginning, and then it never stops getting better.

I don't usually play RPGs for the story so much as the characters; that's part of why I like Tales games so much, because they have such intriguing characters that I can't bring myself NOT to care about. Symphonia had a cookie-cutter story, but the characters are what made it good, and they made such a cookie-cutter story more enjoyable than it should have been. Tales of Graces on the other hand (Which was on my list, I believe) not only has characters that are easy to connect with, it's also got an excellently told story, and the best battle system in any rpg ever.

I beg to differ.

Paper Mario: The Thousand year door has the best battle system EVER. It's also number 7 on my top ten.

Or, technically, isn't Pokemon an RPG?

technically, any video game is an RPG. ;)

my favorite battle system in any RPG is grandia's. it's turn-based, but designed so it flows in real time in a more invigorating way than the ATB system. grandia II was simply a great game; i thought of it like you thought of symphonia, BH: the story was a little lame, but the characters were really cool. that, and the game was just fun. i don't think i've had more fun playing a turn-based RPG than i had with grandia II.

oh, if only the dreamcast had quality RPGs in the double digits..

Hmm, well I'd probably avoid saying that unless you've actually played Tales of Graces. Simply watching video doesn't cut it. Aside from one bug in the programming, namely the SUBETE NO KIRISATSU JUUHA GOUSHOUZAN SUBETE NO KIRISATSU JUUHA GOUSHOUZAN SUBETE NO KIRISATSU JUUHA GOUSHOUZAN bug that people abuse for that one title of Asbels, it's perfect.

Yeah, if only. It had like, 5 good RPGs, and four of those were ported to other systems (I don't really count Evolution as two, they were just two parts to one game, which the gamecube port seemed to realize)

Grandia has probably the best turn based battle system. It was excellent in the original, they made it better in the second, and even better in Grandia 3, with the addition of aerial attacks, and much nicer graphics.
