Scar's claws tore through skin and fur, splattering blood on his face and feet. He smirked. The houndoom had reacted well, reducing the damage and likely avoiding blindness, and yet this was all she was capable of doing. His screech had been as effective as he had hoped, and even as he hopped back as quickly as he was able, all she did was throw her head back and howl in pain. The sound was more primal than he had expected, yet it still was not an attack.
Even as the long cry began to fade, small tendrils of purple smoke drifted up from her jaws, and she spewed a cloud of gas into the air. She did so with less force than it was usually used, allowing the cloud to form around her and circle her, the hot cloud slowly drifting up. He leapt backward, although it hardly seemed necessary - she hadn't blown it toward him, and the cloud merely remained around her, drifting up slowly.
He regarded her skeptically. What were her intentions? Yes, it would be unpleasant to attack her, as he'd likely have to inhale the poisonous gas, but hardly impossible. She had the smog surround her rather than Scar, which did indeed force him to enter it should he wish to strike, but houndoom were hardly immune to poison, even gasses released from combustion. If he simply waited, she would either have to inhale the gas or leave the cloud, and he would be free to attack. If he was to assume she was reasonably intelligent and had a mind for battle, why would she do such a thing? Perhaps it was a mere lapse in judgement, but he did not think there would be one so soon.
Then his eyes widened. Of course! There was one great difference between houndoom and absol: fire. He had disregarded the fact as unimportant, but he had been foolish to do so. Indeed, if she was plotting what he believed she might be plotting, it would be unsafe to near her. He'd be harmed far more than she.
In fact, even from this distance, it was unsafe. He disliked retreat, but knew when it was strategic to do so, and would not foolishly remain within her proximity.
He turned and fled toward the lake, running as fast as he was able, though he glanced back every few bounds to check on her. Should she leave the smog cloud behind a safe distance, he'd stop, but otherwise he would continue to run and force her to come to him, nearer to the lake. No, perhaps the presence of water would do little to aid him, but if necessary he had the ability to swim while she would find the experience unpleasant. He did not have a plan with involving the lake as of yet, but it could only be beneficial, even if this flight was unnecessary.
End stats: +2 special attack, -1 defence
(( Er, that's how I could best interpret the smog, 'specially if you want it encircling your body. ))
