• Welcome to The Cave of Dragonflies forums, where the smallest bugs live alongside the strongest dragons.

Guests are not able to post messages or even read certain areas of the forums. Now, that's boring, don't you think? Registration, on the other hand, is simple, completely free of charge, and does not require you to give out any personal information at all. As soon as you register, you can take part in some of the happy fun things at the forums such as posting messages, voting in polls, sending private messages to people and being told that this is where we drink tea and eat cod.

Of course I'm not forcing you to do anything if you don't want to, but seriously, what have you got to lose? Five seconds of your life?

Cloning

I find cloning wrong. You have to respect dead people too, right?

Scientists collect the DNA of one animal/creature. The DNA will probably consist of how that animal/creature is unique. Like, for example, if scientists only collected DNA from one human, and the human race was on the verge of extinction, humans could be recreated, but they would all have the same behavior and attitude. This applies to animals too. No matter what its natural behavior, there is always that something that separates it from the rest, right?

Identical twins have the same DNA but not the same behavior and attitude.

And I don't see how it'd be disrespectful to the dead, it's not like you're scooping out a huge hunk of flesh to get DNA.
Anyway some people donate their bodies to science.

But yeah I still think human cloning is kind of a shitty idea because of overpopulation yadda yadda

Personality has a lot of biological causes. Like having too much testosterone makes you more short-tempered and angry and things. I think there's a lot of research about genetics and personality traits, but I'm not going to pretend to know anything about it.

The way you were raised and were you were raised as a child contributes.

Oh, that's right, I forgot about that kind of stuff, Danni

I still wouldn't think it would be DNA that affected your personality, more of what I've already stated and what Danni said.

I don't know what I'm saying anyways. x3

If you cloned a genius, would the clone also be a genius? I would support it if this was true, since it would decrease the time before everything in the bible is hard-proved false.

Obviously not if they took the kid and stuck it in a room with no human contact. I don't know much about intelligence being hereditary, but there are massive environmental factors like parental encouragement, quality of schooling and so on.

Also, please just shut up about everything in every religious book being utter crap.
"Treat other people as you would want to be treated"? Yeah, the world would suck if people believed stuff like that!

"Once, a sea bird made its appearance in the capital of the Kingdom of Lu. The King of Lu escorted it to the ancestral temple, where he entertained it, performing the Nine Shao music for it to listen to and presenting it with the meat of the Tailao sacrifice to feast on. But the bird only looked dazed and forlorn, refusing to eat a single slice of meat or drink a cup of wine, and in three days it was dead."

...Heehee!

The problem is that actual good advice like that is mere droplets in a sea of nonsense, superstition and hateful bile. The Bible and other such texts also include wonderful gems such as "Make rape victims marry their rapists" and "Masturbation makes you evil" and "The world is flat because GOD SAID SO".

In fact, it wouldn't even be that much of a problem if people didn't take that bullshit seriously. Problem is, people /do/ actually think that masturbation is a sin and rape victims deserve it and some even still believe in a flat Earth.

True, it does. But it's just a light nudge towards a certain personality. A person's nature as a whole is largely shaped by their environment. Just like how identical twins have identical genetics, but different personalities.

Personally, I don't have any deep qualms about cloning, as long as it's done carefully and ethically. Full-body human and animal cloning seems a little unnecessary, but organ/tissue cloning has a lot of potential to solve many medical problems.
