Girls Stuck In Storm Drain Update Facebook Status

Oh, lol, I remember that. We read about that in Software Networking a couple weeks ago. It makes me lol, when thinking about how fucking stupid people really can be.

Well, a 10 and a 12 year old. Not the smartest duo in the world.

Personally, I'm surprised kids that young even get cellphones. I remember back in the day when you had to be responsible and 13 to get a phone.

Really? For me, even that was too young to get a cell phone. My Mom wouldn't let me get my own cell phone until I had my own job and was able to pay my own bill at 16.

There are tons of 9 and 10 year olds getting cell phones now though, it's quite ridiculous when I see them using them in the mall.

I mean, you have a cellphone. Wouldn't you, like, call for help?
I'd think the kind of reception you'd get in a storm drain wouldn't hold a call well, but would be fine for sending text. Though, of course, Facebook still isn't likely the best medium.

EDIT: disclaimer: I took this thought from some Slashdot comment a couple of weeks ago

I'm 23 and still don't have a cell phone. Then again, I don't exactly call anybody on a regular basis (and the few times I do, I'm usually in my house--with its regular old land-line phone--at the time), so it'd just be a giant waste of money to get one.

As for updating Facebook from a storm drain... didn't actually read the article (it was taking eons to load on my dial-up and I don't have much time), but I suppose if someone other than their 10-to-12-year-old friends read their Facebook page, they could use that to call for help... but I'm guessing they wouldn't give their parents/teachers/etc. access to their Facebook page, so it probably wouldn't work.

Kids in elementary school are getting cellphones nowadays. I guess their parents think they can use it to call them if they get lost or soemthing.

Also, a storm drain might not have great reception, but if that were true, sure as hell yu wouldn't have Internet access.

I'm 16 and STILL don't have a phone. Not like I really need one.

Hey, at least they still used Facebook to get help. They could have just used it to tell everyone how cute that guy in math class is while pondering how to get help. Now THAT would have been sad.

Why not? With bad reception, the Internet access would just be really slow. A phone call, on the other hand, can't just slow down; it'd probably work, but the sound wouldn't be any good and the person on the other end wouldn't have a clue what they were saying. (Still assuming that the reception is a storm drain is bad.)

I don't even have a Facebook, or a MySpace, or anything of the sort.

Yep, same here. I really don't know why kids my age are always like "oh, i was on facebook/myspace/twitter the other day for liek 4 HOURS!!!! ZOMG!!". Seriously, it's so...pointless.

I don't vse Facebook either. Twitter covld be vsed for cool pvrposes, but most of the time, it's jvst boring, crappy stvff like "tying my shoes... making a tvna sandwich, lvlz"

My mom got a facebook recently, and I was all "vh wvt now?"

I don't even own a cellphone. I guess that if i get stuck in a storm drain anytime soon i won't be able to tell you guys about it instead of calling the fire dept. Bummer. I'll have to find the way out by myself or stand under a grate and yell until someone somehow hears me. I won't be able to get someone from a random help website to call 911 for me. Gee, i just don't know what i would ever do!

Facebook! the new 911!
Need help? Update your Facebook page!
Onstar! have you updated your facebook status?

It's actually just as annoying to see kids with facebooks. Like, seriously, who would you have to keep in touch with that you haven't seen in forever, or are gonna be leaving oh so many months? They haven't even been around long enough to worry about that (Granted, I haven't either, but I just use it to keep in touch with friends of mine that have already graduated, or went away for college and the like.)

..nine and ten years old with cellphones? I think their parents takes the cellphones as handheld consoles now and give them to their kids.

Admitedly, their age also explains their lack of better judgement, like to not, at least, TRY to phone the 911 first. I'd say you can't expect your people on facebooks/twitter/whatever to always always be hovering around that but then again, there's always that sort of people. So who knows... seeing how the next generation acts, I guess the police will need their facebook and twitter accounts now. 8/

The headline still is awesomely stupid and funny. "Girls stuck in storm drain updates facebook status." It's not 100% the case here but it just -screams- stupidity. Like gossiping and sharing your feelings is more important than.. urgent situations where you're in danger. :I
School needs some "how to use your cellphone" education now.
