Open High School Blues

((Why not?))

Frederick continued down the hall. As a bird, he would probably want a space-filled room; not necessarily for flying, he was just like that. He decided that he would look for the dorms and a partner at the same time; he had no idea where either one was.

Lucius, glancing around, saw a Pidgeot moving down the hallways, alone. He gulped, steeled his nerves, and moved to match pace with him.

"Um..." he began, before shaking his head. "...Do you have a dormmate yet?" he asked, deciding to get directly to the point.

Frederick turned his head. Was this person trying to make small talk? He shrugged inwardly, and replied.

"I've been looking for one, except for the fact that I'm not very good at first impressions." He didn't know whether or not there was a wall ahead, and chances were there wasn't, but either way he didn't care.

"Okay then...well, I'm looking for a partner too..." he said, before pausing. "I'm Lucius, by the way. Just moved here from Hoenn." He said, and glanced around. "...What classes do you have?" he asked, making sure he didn't accidentally collide with someone while walking.

Frederick nodded. "My name's Frederick. I have Japanese, Computer Programming, Science, and Foods." He laughed a bit. "I wonder if we get to blow things up in Science? That is, if chemistry is involved." He recovered his straight face and continued walking. "I'm rather interested in programming, actually, even though it might be hard to type." He wiggled his primaries a bit. "What classes do you have?"

"Oh, I have Psych, Drama, Science and Foods. We have two classes together, I guess." he shrugged. "Psych for the heck of it, Drama because I like to act, Science...well, because it was the only option I liked, with the blowing stuff up thing, and foods...because, well, it's food." he explained. "So...Do you maybe wanna...share a dorm room?" he asked, indicating to the various dorm rooms around them.

"Japanese because it's an interesting language, I guess... I know a bit. I'm in Foods because I have no idea what it's like." Frederick turned his head to the dorm doors, and nodded. "Sure. I've been looking for a partner anyway."

"Right." Dawn swooped down a bit lower, towards the east side of the building. It was nice to know where things were, and this was useful anyway. She wasn't quite sure what this was, but it looked like a rather large section. Just before she hit the ground, she soared up again, causing a gust to breathe on the grass, making it bow down to the might of wind. The Swellow angled her tails and wings, banking to the right, and stopped in midair, waiting for Dragon.

"Alright then! ...So, I guess that we should find a room." He said, before pulling open a door that looked vacant enough. Finding it was a broom closet, he moved onto the next one, a relativly normal dormroom for two. "...This one is as good as any of them will be, don't you think?" he asked, reasoning that every room would simply be exactly the same in terms of size and look.

Frederick nodded his head a bit. "I seriously don't care which one we have. As long as we have one, that's for sure." He stepped in and looked out the window, his gaze resting mainly on the blue sky above. "It might take awhile to get to the next outside door, but I like it." He turned and nodded again.

Dragon pulled around and followed Dawn, using her tail like a rudder to change directions. She pulled up beside Dawn.
"So, want to go check out the classes? I mean, we can fly by the windows..."

Dragon pointed towards a wall near the two's room.
"Let's start there, why not?" She flew slowly towards the brick wall, taking her time to look into every window.

Frederick turned around, stretching his wings a bit.

"You know, I've been in that auditorium place for a long time. I think I'll go outside for a walk or something." Without waiting for an answer from his roommate, he started towards the door. "If you need me, I'll be outside." He entered the hall and soon exited the school.

He took a deep breath. He had never been that good at flying, and it might be good to practice right about now. He unfolded his wings from his sides and looked up. A straight vertical approach was the hardest, so he would probably have to work on the more level acsending. He stepped forwards and then quickened his gait, shoving the air beneath his feathers downwards. He rose a bit, and flapped again. He didn't know how to stay in the air, but that was why he was here. He stayed on a level path about six feet above the ground, keeping himself aloft by pushing down with his wings every so often. He didn't want to lose the feeling of flight. He flapped once more, rising again. The air started to move out from under his wings, so he let it do so and landed gently with a few flaps. He would have to work on staying in the air.

Dawn glided among the windows also, looking in. She could see many rooms, but didn't exactly know what they were for. The Swellow hovered near each window, taking in the sight for a few seconds and remembering it. Then, she moved onto the next, and after a few minutes, she was done with all for that section of the building.

Dragon swooped low down to the first-floor classrooms, looking at the rooms of the classes she wouldn't have that year. She heard a flurry of feathers, and saw a Pidgeot morph flying nearby. It looked like he was having a bit of trouble, and she grinned to herself. Dragon skimmed across the pavement, reaching down to touch the cement with her finger once in a while, before pulling up.

Frederick let a bit of air escape his mouth. He started to dash forwards, rising a few inches above the ground a few seconds later. He pumped his wings and let himself rise. The pockets of air beneath his secondaries were shifting a little, and he didn't quite know how to keep them as they were supposed to be yet. He flapped again, and the wind stopped quivering as it supported him from below. He curved up a bit and, with common sense, knew that one couldn't rise without flapping one's wings; otherwise he would fall to the ground tailfirst. He was about twenty feet beneath the Swellow morph now, and decided that he would learn how to turn (he hadn't figured it out yet). He also didn't know when to pull up during a swoop, so he angled his wings downwards a bit, and let himself drop down. When his talon-like feet were seven feet from the asphalt, he returned his feathers to their normal, level position and touched down in a few seconds. Right now, he was contemplating where it would be safe to teach himself to rudder...

Dawn saw a Pidgeot flying below. She circled once and swooped down, landing softly beside him. "Good day. My name's Dawn. I don't believe I caught yours yet..." She spread her wings, showing the Swellow-like patterns on her clothes. "We're both birds!" Amiably, the avian-person grinned.

Frederick turned around and looked at the Swellow morph. He nervously unfurled his right wing, turning his gaze to it. "Hi. I'm Frederick. Nice to meet you." He looked up at the sky. "I'm a bit embarrassed to say this, but I'm not the best at flying yet...."

"Same here..." Dawn replied. "I can't take off from level ground. I have to start from a place that's higher than the area that I'm going to fly over."

She suddenly slapped her forehead with her right wing. "Argh... speaking of that, I'm going to have trouble getting in the air again... do you know of a place I could take off?"
