Arceus created the types to sorta maintain the balance between each other. From there it probably created Mew (or the two popped into existence together), explaining why the Normal and the Psychic types had such great advantages in gen I (the Psychics barely any weaknesses, hit hard against very common types, Normal learns a lot of different types of attacks and only misses against Ghosts and is not very effective against Rock).

I doubt the types share an ancestor; egg groups would be a better guide, though the fact that some of them overlap is somewhat confounding. Of course, in a universe where creationism is known to be true we can't really assume any principles still hold.

Fair enough. Egg Groups would be a better indicator, you're right. The fact that they overlap may also be a product of evolution, in that Pokémon adapted to be fertile over a broader range, allowing them to create offspring with creatures outside of their own species, increasing the rate that they will reproduce? Though that does seem far-fetched.

Creationism is a thing in Pokémon, but I like to think that Arceus made the Legendaries and the rest just happened.
