Recommend a DS Game

spaekle

emotionless and cold as ice
I've got a car trip ahead of me and some spare money, so I'm thinking of buying a new DS game to keep myself entertained. Problem is, I really have no idea what to buy, so I figured I'd do what the cool kids do and start a crappy suggestion thread. :V

I'm not that picky. I don't like racing games and I don't want a puzzle game if I can get roughly the same thing for free on my cellphone, but that's about it. RPG's and adventure games are good, as are strategy games. If it has a fun story and/or addicting gameplay, I'm happy.

Oh, but I don't want a Pokemon game. I've been playing Pokemon so much lately that I'm wanting something new, and I already own most Pokemon games for the DS anyway.

I have some interest in Disgaea, FF: Echoes of Time, and Fire Emblem. If anyone has any comments on those games (more specifically the ones out for the DS), please share. I've never played a Disgaea/Crystal Chronicles/Fire Emblem game before.

Other than that, just throw out some titles for me to look up! I'd like to get into something new.

TWEWY. TWEWY TWEWY TWEWY.

...In the awesome off chance that you've already played it, get Final Fantasy Tactics A2 which is a bit like fire emblem and Disgaea only more forgiving, and is easier to get into than most SRPGs, in my opinion. And, uh. Yeah, that's about all the good DS games that really stick out in my mind right now, but trust me, TWEWY will complete your life.

EDIT: I KNEW I WAS FORGETTING SOMETHING the postninja is right, Ace Attorney is great too, unfortunately there's four games in it ($120, unless they're cheaper than $30 each) and you'll often find yourself in need of a walkthrough, especially if you're as impatient as I am.

Aye, TWEWY already has completed my life. I have FFTA2 as well, but I got stuck on some antlion thing and haven't played it since. :( Both are awesome games though.

I've played one PW game; I think it was the second one. I liked it, but those games are so hard to find in my area D: I also cheated for like... most of it. But I felt proud of myself when I got it on my own!

brgl dammit there goes my advice

The second TWEWY game (Justice for All) is, in my opinion, the worst; it has fewer cases than the rest and lacks a) the lovelty of the first b) Godot (and the awesomeness) of the third and c) the DS features of the fourth. What it does have is creepy clowns but one-- no, two of the best defendants in the entire series. Uh, but you weren't asking for a review of a game youve already played...

I'd reccommend getting another PW game, or... let me root through my game library... oh! Ever played Dragon Quest Monsters: Rocket Slime? It's a cute, fun (albeit short) platformer with awesome epic tank battles and cool gameplay mechanics. It's great on a trip. =D Don't expect it to last you the entire time though; I beat it in just a couple of days.

I've heard Hotel Dusk: Room 215 is good, but I've seen it played and you're definitely gonna need a strategy guide xD; Uhm... LostMagic was an earlier DS game so it's probably pretty uncommon now; it was a cool SRPG that revolved around commanding armies of monsters and a neat rune-drawing system for casting spells. Very hard but good fun if you're up for it.

Disgaea... I've played it, and found that it takes a lot of level grinding and knowing what you're going to do beforehand. :/ However, the characters were endearing and the dialogue made me laugh.

...oh my god, I just realized I forgot something else. Chrono Trigger! Oh geez. *facepalm* It's a great RPG, I haven't beaten it yet (darn you red and blue mudbeasts) but it's called "timeless" for a reason, y'see?

Fire Emblem is pretty amazing, but expect to restart a chapter once in a while: The enemies can be mofos sometimes. Medium length.

I'd also recommend Final Fantasy III or IV for the DS, those are both pretty amazing.

Advance Wars: Days of Ruin is pretty tight as well, it's Fire Emblem-esque except with tanks.

Heh, good luck finding an "Adventure" game. To my knowledge, the only true adventure games are Shenmue, Beyond Good & Evil, Megaman Legends, and Zelda. And there's only one Zelda game on the DS right now.

But anyways, there's lots I can recommend to you;

Echoes of Time, I would NOT recommend, unless you've got someone to play with during your trip.

Talking SRPGs, if anything, go for Knights in the Nightmare. It's a little difficult to get into, having a relatively steep learning and difficulty curve, but provided you look at all of the tutorials in the game and actually pay attention to them, it shouldn't be that hard. Get this, and you've got a very solid SRPG with a very good, albeit somewhat confusing story. Just not as confusing as Killer 7.

There's also Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Endless Frontier. Unlike the name suggests, there aren't really any Super Robots in it, but the battles are simple, and easy to get into, and the overall game has the feel of a mixture of a SNES RPG, and something made with RPG Maker. Plus, it's got Reiji and Xiaomu from Namco x Capcom, and Kos-Mos and Shion!

If you haven't played any of them before, I'd also recommend Megaman Star Force. It's not quite Battle Network, but they're still very good games, having characters that don't quite stand up to the likes of Netto, Raika, or Enzan, it's still got a solid cast of characters. I dunno if you played the first two, but the third one actually just came out today...

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor is also right up there with my list of DS games to recommend; it's got everything that ever even made MegaTen liked by its fans, and some things new to the series, having a fairly simple battle system, and a solid story with memorable characters, and a good 6 endings. And unlike Persona 3 & 4, your main character has expressions!

Also, they're not very easy to find, but if you do, they're relatively cheap; try to pick up one or two of the three DS Castlevanias. They're all very easy, and can be finished in a matter of days, but they should be able to satisfy your needs for your trip.

And then they're not really RPGs or SRPGs, but more Action type, I'd also recommend Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword, Megaman ZX, or Megaman ZX Advent. Megaman ZX and ZXA are both pretty much what Megaman has been for the last 21 years, but with a mix of Metroid's free-roaming worlds. The worlds just aren't as interesting, but the stories for both are pretty decent. The only thing that might be a turn-off is that the difficulty can occasionally make Megaman Zero look easy.

Ninja Gaiden DS is... Fairly interesting as well; you hold the DS sideways, and control all of Ryu's movements from the "Right" side, the touch screen, and you get a map on the "Left" top screen. The game isn't nearly as difficult as its prequel and sequel, but it has its moments.

There's also Chrono Trigger DS if you haven't played it. While I prefer the other versions, availability and playability is the issue in CT's case, as the PSX and SNES versions are... kinda unplayable on the road, and are difficult to find for reasonable prices, along with whether or not you have interest in it. I'll refrain from saying anything on it, since it's difficult for me to say anything without going out on a tirade on just how amazing it is. I'll say this much; the excuse for most of the events in the game are described as the predestination paradox, although not outright. You need to have some understanding of the concept before you go out and yell at the game saying "Snake, you can't do that! You'll create a time paradox!"

And no, I couldn't pass up a chance to quote Snake Eraser.

Hope I was at least able to help here though, and I hope you have a nice and safe trip!

Gah, I can't believe I forgot these:

Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume, and Blue Dragon Plus. Both of them are SRPGs, but Valkyrie Profile is still the same it always has been at heart; the actual battles themselves are like the other ones where you've got one character assigned to each button with a specific amount of hits. It's also got the same slow rising difficulty curve that tri-Ace is known for in all of their games.

I haven't played Blue Dragon Plus, but several of my friends, including one that loathes JRPGs enjoyed Blue Dragon Plus, as well as the Xbox game, and said it was a very good game.

If you're into more old school Roguelike RPGs, might I also recommend The Dark Spire, Steal Princess, Izuna: Legend of the Unemployed Ninja, or Deep Labyrinth? They're all really good games, but like any roguelike, they can get a little difficult from lack of resources in game (That's what old school roguelike is all about!). Also go for Dragon Quest Monsters if interested.

Lunar Knights is a fun Action RPG if you haven't played that either. And it's not an RPG, but Tokyo Beat Down is, in three short words; awesome, and hilarious. It's an oldschool Beat'em up, so if you've played Streets of Rage, or River City Ransom and enjoyed them, you'll feel right at home. There's also lots of breaking of the 4th wall, however subtle or in your face it may be.

Well since someone already said FE: Shadow Dragon (that game WILL destroy you mid to late in the campaign. Fun, but I suggest taking breaks to avoid going crazy.) and AW: DoR... (Try DS, too.)

Professor Layton and the Curious Village is fun. And I'm thinking you can't get something like it on your cell phone for free, but my parents have only ever allowed me to have crap phones, so I dunno.

Assuming you don't have a DSi, try Riviera: The Promised Land on the GBA if you somehow find a copy (seriously rare game). It's in the same series as Knights in the Nightmare (Dept. Heaven), although they have that FF-like quality of having nothing to do with each other (not even gameplay-wise). A nice little dungeon crawler-type RPG with somewhat unique gameplay, a fairly good story, fun characters, and charming artwork. Vies with Golden Sun and it's sequel for my favorite RPG on the GBA. Count yourself lucky if you find a copy, the print run was short (like just about every Atlus game on the GBA) and I actually found my copy vacationing in California.

Fire Emblem and Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones on GBA aren't bad buys if you can find them.

Mmm... This is true and untrue; the only thing common with the three games that are out now is that they're all in the same universe. We can't say anything else yet, since this might change in the future; Dept. Heaven episode 3 is still being made, and they've already announced episode IX.

Ah, thanks to everyone! I wasn't expecting to get all these games I've never even heard of. :D; I've been looking a lot of them up and now have a little list of ones that seem particularly interesting. Some of them I might even end up getting later on if I find myself bored again.

I've got plenty of time before my trip at the end of next week, so if anyone still has a comment/suggestion I'll hear it out. :V

Avalon Code. Seriously. Basicly you play as a girl or boy who comes into the possesion of The Book of Prophacy. The book contains pages and information on everything in your world, but it only appears before the world ends itself to start anew. Your world is ending prematurely, so it's up to you to find out who's causing it and to stop them. It's a great RPG, I had a lot of fun with it. :3

I also cast a vote for Chrono Trigger because simply put, IT'S FRICKAWESOME.

Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plumet
Oh yes, is this good, or should I go with Lenneth first?

There are a lot of games I know. You said you're interested in FE? Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon is a remake of FE 1 for the DS, and it's a pretty fun game. But in my opinion, you should start the series off with Fire Emblem: Blazing Swords (also known as Fire Emblem 7) for the GBA.

As Link said (wasn't that your name before? I'm not gonna bother writing out the current >.>), Professor Layton and The Curious Village is a GREAT, and challenging, puzzle game you should check out. It'll definte;y be better than something you can buy on your cellphone. And it's not just puzzles, it has a well-rounded story and awesome CGC cut-scenes. You should totally consider it for a car trip.

Chrono Trigger is also a really fun game, IMO.

Lumious Arc; ever heard of it? It's a grid-based strategy, like FFtactics, but there aren't really any classes and no AP or anything. It's not the most fun game, at least not compared to FFTA2, but it does have one thing over Tactics, and that is the story. Unlike Tactics2, which doesn't have a good story whatsoever, the one in Luminous Arc is much more compelling, and the villain is... different. The antagonist is different from most games you play. Overall it's a pretty well done game.

Final Fantasy 4, the remake on the DS. Not much to say here. The story is meh, but it's pretty fun and really challenging.

God, this one's old, but have you ever heard a game called Spectrobes? The basic idea of it is that you go around digging up Gems and fossils (which can be really addicting btw) and use them to create and/or power up beings called Spectrobes, which are the only things that can harm an evil alien that comes to consume the universe. Futuristic, obviously. I liked it, but this game is really old. It's still fun, nevertheless.

If you don't already have it, ANIMAL CROSSIIIIIINNNNG.

I know there are more, but I'm blanking out right now. Hmmm...

I'd second this as Shadow Dragon is seriously hardcore, but FE7 is getting hard to find in stores as well. =/
As Link said (wasn't that your name before? I'm not gonna bother writing out the current >.>)

Go ahead, I just didn't want numbers in my name anymore, but Link itself implies that I'm a Zelda fan (not so much nowadays) so I went with my more usual forum name.

If you want an addictive game that can pass time quickly, try Rhythm Heaven. It's really simple (just tap, flick or slide the style in time with the beat), but still quite challenging if you aren't the best at keeping in time with the beat (like me) :P

I recommend Harvest Moon DS or Rune Factory for time-wasting addictive farming. :D

It is, I'm glad I got my copy years back. But there's always Amazon! >:D

I could always go with SEF.

Harvest Moon: DS and DS Cute are good if you don't mind doing the typical farming chores again and again. It sounds really boring but it is very addicting when you get into it. They can be really glitchy though. And you don't really need a walkthrough. Other Harvest Moon games are good too. I've never played Rune Factory but I've heard it's more of fantasy RPG farming game.

Other than that I wouldn't recommend My Sims because it just sucks. Very dull and nothing like The Sims.
