• Welcome to The Cave of Dragonflies forums, where the smallest bugs live alongside the strongest dragons.

Guests are not able to post messages or even read certain areas of the forums. Now, that's boring, don't you think? Registration, on the other hand, is simple, completely free of charge, and does not require you to give out any personal information at all. As soon as you register, you can take part in some of the happy fun things at the forums such as posting messages, voting in polls, sending private messages to people and being told that this is where we drink tea and eat cod.

Of course I'm not forcing you to do anything if you don't want to, but seriously, what have you got to lose? Five seconds of your life?

2011 London Riots

One thing that annoyed me about this entire debacle was that some people, instead of recognizing the true causes of the riots, tried to blame things such as Social Networking and evil young people. Both are incredibly silly, especially the first. Social Networking's being used to co-ordinate riots was nothing more than a scapegoat; after all, it is a tool, like a car or a knife; when death, damage and destruction are dealt with these tools, it isn't the tools themselves that are blamed, it's the people that use them. In this instance, even they can't be fully blamed.

I won't pretend to know a lot about this issue, but from the news reports and interviews I've seen, there's been a mix of disgusting blame and a great sense of trying to find the core of the problem.

I don't see why you would be imprecise when it's perfectly simple to be precise. If it's not a problem, then why not just say that?

Last I checked, England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland did not represent themselves at the United Nations

To be fair, representation in the UN is not the be all and end all definition of country. Scotland is a country, with a considerable (Tailsy would say inadequate) degree of autonomy. If this were happening in the US, I suspect people would be precise to state level at least.

The thing is that the riots so far are an English problem. They've not spread to Wales or Scotland and I don't think they will. Our governments don't totally suck, after all.

Also! Isn't it Salford who's been saying "lolol let's evict people from council houses"? As if that's going to help! We already have an underclass that doesn't work, isn't educated and doesn't want to fit in with the rest of society so we're going to alienate them even more by making them homeless, which means they can't open bank accounts, which means they can't get jobs, which means they're going to turn to criminal activity...

sigh

I hope someone looks at the underlying causes and, when a report or whatever is published, that the government listens. fuckers.

As seen on Twitter: "If you don't want the underclass rioting, don't create an underclass in the first place."

I wonder if there will be riots in America next, seems like every country has had some unrest recently except us

I think that if there was a riot in my city, I would at least check it out

The United States has unrest, it just manifests itself as a decade of Islamaphobia and random acts of prejudice. I doubt it would take much to cause a riot in any given US city.

Speaking about the London riots; I don't know much about them, but what confuses me is that it's all random. There doesnt seem to be a pattern I mean really, a music warehouse? What did that have anything to do with all this? Then theres the violence, which is sad in any case. I wish there were a civil way for the people to express their anger, but it even confuses me what theyre even rioting about.

I don't think it's really about anything for most of the people involved... they just want to burn shit. but still, they wouldn't want to burn shit unless there were some underlying problems, you know what I mean?

Things are pretty chill in Ireland actually. We're just looking towards England with a mixture of concern, empathy, worry and, for a few people, doubtlessly, a certain sense of schadenfreude.

Did anyone else see the Communities Minister (Eric Pickles?) talking on Sky? My mother summed it up pretty well when she said "Well, he's an ignorant man anyway." He clearly has no business being in his position.

Here's a fun game. Try and imagine how the Daily Mail will spin the events of the last week. Try and imagine just how narrow-minded and ridiculous only the good ol' DM can be.

Then multiply it by a thousand, read this article, and see how close you were.

Oh.... oh dear. I was way the heck off on that one. I mean, a lot of it isn't even about the riots! It's just accusing everyone the author doesn't agree with! That is not how you write news XD

Looks about right. :/

Yeah it is. That basically is news. Every paper/station/whatever has its own agenda.

1. The vid about Scotland has been removed due to copyright claim. At least the internet still makes sense.

2. This is very confusing, all of it, and I can hardly keep up with it.

Cameron actually tried to defend evicting entire families from their council homes because one member of said family was involved in the rioting. Obviously, evicting poor people from their homes will lead to a reduction in crime. What a cock.
