The kingdom of Nerai is a small, medieval kingdom located at the base of the mountains, out in the wilderness. A single river flows through, providing the main source of water for the kingdom, as well as a major trade route. At the center stands a great castle where the king and queen live. It's the economical center of the kingdom, where merchants come from far away to show off their wares, and where many of the nobles within the kingdom come to work and train. Servants for the various aristocrats also inhabit the walls of the castle, each working to make the everyday life of their masters just a little easier. Away from the castle, along dirt paths through the forest, lay the many villages within the boundary of the kingdom. Each village houses only a couple dozen families, as opposed to the couple thousand people living in or near the castle itself, but they each had various different functions. Most were farming villages, but there also were major logging villages in the forest, mining villages by the mountains, as well as a few fishing and boating villages along the river. Most of the people in the villages were serfs, tied to the lands to produce the goods that kept the kingdom running, but each village also had a governing noble family, who had their house run by servants, who were slightly more trusted and better treated by the nobles they worked for than the serfs.
Every year, the kingdom hosts a simple test, known simply as "The Examination." Fifteen year olds from across the whole kingdom, from every village, are given a small test of skills, knowledge, and affinity toward magic. While the rules are straightforward, the actual scoring is much more subtle, as it rewards raw, unrefined talent as opposed to definite methodological skill, and only the most well-trained officials make up the testing committee, traveling from village to village, and within the castle itself, to conduct their tests. All fifteen year old males are required to participate, but females are not barred from choosing to take part as well.
The Examination is possibly the only chance for upward mobility in the kingdom. While most commoners fail, return to their lands, and are left behind to continue with their measly existence, many do reach a competency level 1, and are awarded a position as an apprentice footsoldier, monk, or mage in the King's Army. With level 1 comes to most an elevated status and care, as they are trained in the art of combat, in knowledge and worship, or in magic, provided for during their training, and returned with money, fame, and status within their community. Then there is level 2, the knights, priests, and wizards, which few commoners reach, but most children of nobles are awarded almost immediately, only to be determined which category. Those commoners that do manage to reach level 2, however, become nobles themselves upon completion of their training, and are given land and workers. But with increased privilege comes increased responsibility and risk, and the skills acquired are skills required to survive.
However, there is a third level, known only to a select few. Only those with the very best potential in the combination of all three categories are selected for this level. It is almost regarded as a legend, that almost nobody who is selected for this level ever returns alive, but those that do have been awarded great fame and fortune. There is a large city, surrounded by steep, rocky mountains, and the only ways into the city are either through the air, or through a small, heavily guarded cave located at the base of a mountain. While the city itself is mostly occupied and run by humans, it is the occupants surrounding, intertwined with the humans, that truly define this city... the dragons. Those humans selected for level 3, are given a scroll with very vague instructions on one side, and a map drawn with their own blood on the other side. They know only that they have the choice whether to accept this calling or not, but should they accept, they are to follow the map to a remote cave, based in the wilderness. What they don't know is that, soon, they will be partnered with a dragon, and that how they grow together and handle their relationship with their partner will determine their life or death.
Humans:
You have been chosen for a rather secret, elite section of the King's Guard, called the Order of the Dragon Knights, a guild where members breed and raise dragons, who are then partnered up with newcomers when they come of age. You have no idea what awaits you, as you have only received a scroll with vague instructions and a meeting place, a cave located in the forest, at the base of a group of mountains. You have, of course, only heard of dragons from lore, as destructive, monstrous beasts that endanger the citizens of any villages they live near. You must overcome your own impressions and form a bond with your new partner, in order to survive the trials and training that await them, and the most dangerous and vital missions they would afterward be sent on. You have already found the cave listed on the map, and now you must enter and discover what awaits you.
Dragons:
You have been raised from birth within the hidden Dragon city. Until now, you have been given the freedom to mostly run your own life. You have your own home, a cave in the mountains, filled with whatever treasures, toys, tools, and furniture that you have obtained from the city below. But you also have been growing up already with the other dragons your own age. Food has been mostly provided for you by the elders, although it has been up to you and the other young dragons to determine just how to divvy it, and there is also the option to go hunting in the vast wilderness within the valley beyond the city, or to do chores or other work for the human citizens in return for payment in livestock or treasure. But now, you know the day is approaching when you'll have your first chance to bond with a human, to become partners for life. But it's most important then to find a human that you're compatible with, that you feel is worthy to be your partner. You know you may have multiple chances, but each chance you waste means another chance to grow stronger and become an adult is gone. The other dragons may be your friends, but they're also your competition, and only the strongest pair will rise to the top.
Rules:
#1: This is a semi-lit RPG. I expect each paragraph, both in sign-ups and in each post to be a full, complete, descriptive paragraph. A rule of thumb is 5 sentences, but if you find yourself struggling and counting sentences, this probably isn't the RPG for you.
#2: Death is a very real possibility in this RPG. You may let your character die at any time. However, you must get permission from the other character if you intend to actually kill a character. There may also be blood, injury, and romance, but please, no actual sex scenes.
#3: You may have a maximum of two characters at any given time, one human and one dragon. If one of your characters dies, or if you only began with one character in the first place, you may create a new character, but you may have to wait for me to provide an opening for you to use this new character. You may control any NPC you wish for a single post if needed, but try to keep this within reason... do not abuse NPCs.
#4: Teachers will be special player-controlled characters. If you wish to play a teacher, send me a PM. Each pair of teaching partners should be played by a single player, and teacher characters are only to be played in the presence of other students. Teachers do not count toward the two character limit.
#5: If you have a human and a dragon character (not teachers), they may NOT be partners. Many scenes may involve dialogue between two partners only, and this can be awkward to simulate if one player controls both.
#6: Partnerships will be determined in-game itself. If you wish to discuss partnerships here in the OOC thread, that's fine, but please wait until everyone has joined. During the course of the RPG, it will be the dragons who are to choose their human partners.
