• Welcome to The Cave of Dragonflies forums, where the smallest bugs live alongside the strongest dragons.

Guests are not able to post messages or even read certain areas of the forums. Now, that's boring, don't you think? Registration, on the other hand, is simple, completely free of charge, and does not require you to give out any personal information at all. As soon as you register, you can take part in some of the happy fun things at the forums such as posting messages, voting in polls, sending private messages to people and being told that this is where we drink tea and eat cod.

Of course I'm not forcing you to do anything if you don't want to, but seriously, what have you got to lose? Five seconds of your life?

I have never played a Final Fantasy game.

This must be remedied, now that I finally have some time on my hands! But where do I start?

Fortunately, Popcultural Osmosis has taught me everything I actually *need* to know about the Final Fantasy franchise, but even so - it's a bit like knowing the plot and ending of Moby-Dick without having read it.

I have a strong feeling I'd prefer the older 2D games, but I wouldn't really know, would I?

So. Which game to get (first)?

My personal favorite is Final Fantasy VII, but it's not well-liked on this forum and I'm sure you're going to get a lot of responses saying to avoid it. Or, even worse, they'll tell you to play VIII. Ugh.

VI (released as III in America on the SNES) is probably your best bet. There are lots of ways to get your hands on it.

I think VI and IX were the best, personally. There seem to be separate camps of people who think VI or VII was The Best Final Fantasy, where IX is more of a love-it-or-hate-it game. From what I've seen, anyway.

FFVII isn't a bad game, it's just really overhyped. It might not be that worth playing if you already know what happens though. I made it like halfway through and said 'fuck it' because I was stuck on this stupid robot boss thing and already knew what happened from that point on anyway.

Start with VI, VII, VIII, and IX.

X was decent, but it was too short, but it's cheap and easy to find, so try that one.

Avoid XII at all costs. I can't believe how anyone can play that piece of crap. XIII on the other hand is actually good, putting Hope aside; Hope can go die in a hole for all I care, he stains the other characters wtih his presence, and the solid battle system with his low magic stat and his retarded weapon. He's nowhere near as whiny as Luke in Tales of the Abyss, but he's a hundred times more irritating D:

Him aside, XIII is an excellent game though, check that out.

So; VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, and XIII.

Make sure you give Chocobo's Dungeon 2, and FF Fables; Chocobo's Dungeon a whirl too. Those are some stellar games. Roguelike games with the job change is always nice.

And if you can, play the ORIGINAL FF Tactics. Not the PSP port, War of the Lions. That one has too much slowdown, and lacks the funny engrish from the original ("This was the darkened items won't appear." Hehe), and it's much more aesthetically pleasing to see on a TV screen. Plus, most people would disagree with me, but I find the original Tactics to have the best story in the entirety of the FF franchise. The story's been done a hundred times before, but the presentation and general storytelling is amazing. Plus, it's also got the best music in the series.

Also, not many would agree with me, but try Vagrant Story; it's not actually a Final Fantasy game, but I myself still consider it part of the series, being that it's part of the Ivalice timeline (Not the Alliance. The series' timeline). Plus, it's got an interesting battle system, and the idea of mixing weapon parts together for different effects is really cool. And the story is really good too. Visuals are amazing too, btw

FFIV's also good, especially if you like revolving door parties; the story's okay, but I can't really think of anything that really stands out about it, other than Golbeza being awesome.

AND DISSIDIA. YOU NEED TO PLAY DISSIDIA. RIGHT NOW. IT'S FUCKING AWESOME.

There are way too many opinions on FF, so good luck getting a coherent recommendation.

My favorites are VIII and VII. The problem with VII by now is that anyone who is jumping into the series is likely to know what goes down. Which takes a fair amount of the joy out. Although you mentioned possibly having an affinity towards the 2D games anyway, so maybe a moot point.

Try out IV, VIII, or X. I and II have merit as well.

FFVIII is hilariously bad. Don't bother. It has a plot point called time compression. PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE ARE ~THE SAME THING~ AND MONSTERS ARE ATTACKING FROM THE MOON.

I realize a lot of people like it, but no.

VII is the one that people go on about most, but more importantly it is hilariously bad in a good way. FFVIII seems to take itself seriously; FFVII has really stupid plot points and covers them up with minigames. Awesome minigames. One involves Cloud pretending to be a prostitute, there's a CPR minigame, Cloud does jumping jacks in the snow to not die of hypothermia, Tifa in a slapfight minigame, snowboarding.... I am leaving out at least five ridiculous minigames. It is wonderful.
Also, it doesn't take itself seriously at all. The fanbase takes it seriously! but the game itself doesn't. The plot is thoroughly spoiled but the plot was pointless anyway. It is worth it anyway!

FFVI is dark and awesome but not very hilarious.

FFV is corny and has a great class system. Unfortunately, it is at times painfully corny. ... But at least it has a giant talking tree.

FFIV is like FFVII, except the plot makes more sense and there are fewer minigames. It's pretty awesome.

FFIX is great go play it I think you would like it most

FFX needs a skip scene button.

FFXII is the most pretentious and pretty fun anyway. ... But it is ridiculous. And the villains aren't villainous.

Most people I know actually like VIII for the characters; it does have a stellar set of characters, however much one dislikes Selphie, because on the bright side, at least she's no Hope.

Let's hope there's never a character like Hope ever again. Ugh.

See, I played through the first two hours or so, and the writing was awful. From what I know of the game, it ... doesn't really get that much better. It just has more plot eventually.

I can see him thinking VII was funny. :/ Not VIII or X, no, but VII? Possibly.

The writing was really contrived... But I enjoyed the characters enough myself to keep going. Plus, while the story was pretty bad, it's presentation was pretty good, and I prefer its FMVs over those of any other game in the series; they just look nicer to me. It's also got an excellent soundtrack; I liked it enough to actually buy it. Although one could easily listen to just Liberi Fatali and not stop for hours, some of the other ones, like Silence and Motion, and Maybe I'm a Lion (Plus I'm a sucker for battle themes).

Oh, yeah, it has great music. Probably the best in the series. ... but that doesn't mean you need to actually play through the game, y'know?

*vouches for II since nobody else wants to* :(

ALSO, PSP port for Tactics > original despite the frame rate crap-out during attacks. The script is beautifully written and the already great story becomes a lot more memorable.

I ... liked VIII! but honestly I still haven't finished it because I get bored easily with final fantasy games.

I do recommend chocobo racing, though. xD

It depends. I enjoyed the music more than I already do when I heard it with whatever events were going on ingame. Plus, like I said, I did play for the characters. BUt mostly for the battles; most of the hate for VIII comes from the Junction & Draw systems, but I thought they were really innovative, and gives much more in the way of customization. I really enjoyed toying around with it, and making Squall immune to and, absorb any type of damage.

Plus, Holy War + Aura at low HP = cheap.

Therein lies the problem.

but I do this with every RPG, too. most of my pokemon cartridges are unfinished. I've only fully completed sapphire once, and I've since then overwritten that file. I really, really liked VIII, I just have a short attention span.
