• Welcome to The Cave of Dragonflies forums, where the smallest bugs live alongside the strongest dragons.

Guests are not able to post messages or even read certain areas of the forums. Now, that's boring, don't you think? Registration, on the other hand, is simple, completely free of charge, and does not require you to give out any personal information at all. As soon as you register, you can take part in some of the happy fun things at the forums such as posting messages, voting in polls, sending private messages to people and being told that this is where we drink tea and eat cod.

Of course I'm not forcing you to do anything if you don't want to, but seriously, what have you got to lose? Five seconds of your life?

I have never played a Final Fantasy game.

It might sound like a dick thing to say, but if that's the case with you, then maybe RPGs aren't quite the game for you? D: I had a friend who never finished Wild ARMs 3, or Xenosaga when I lent them to her for that exact same reason, and she's been sitting on Xenogears, Tales of the Abyss, Persona 2 Eternal Punishment and Skies of Arcadia for the last four years, never having gotten past the first few hours (Although in her defense for Abyss; Abyss really drags on for the second half and gets really boring with countless backtracking. Anybody can get bored of that) because of that. She still hasn't quite realized I kinda want those back from her, and that RPGs aren't for her =/

V, VI, or IX, really.

V is fun, though has an incredibly corny plot. It has the job class system though, and is good.

VI has a coherent and good plot, the opposite of VIII. It also has a simple and addictively fun battle skill system.

IX is just great. The story is simple, yet has neat plot twists and humor to it. The skill system is simple and fun.

IX is probably my favorite, so I might be a bit biased, but I say go for that.

OR IF YOU WANT TO BE HARDCORE GO FOR FINAL FANTASY I.

I'll be honest with you, I've only played X-2 and I hated it so bad I wanted to throw my playstation 2 out of the window.

I've never had high hopes for the franchise but the only game I don't dislike is VI, only because Kefka is so awesomely insane.

actually I'm going to be a little edgey and recommend something different.

if it's your first ever FF, try the Dawn of Souls GBA game. it comes with two for the price of one (FFI and II!) and it is absolutely piss easy. some of the later games can be a little confusing if you don't have experience with FF, so start with the basics.

the other advantage is that both games on the cart are pretty short, so if you complete those you'll know quickly whether the series is right for you.

also, chronological order is meaningless in Final Fantasy (the only canonically-linked main series games are X and X-2) but if you want to play them in the order they were released (in Japan, anyway...) then yeah.

also whatever you do, don't get the PSP releases (they're not bundled together wtf, long loading times, less impressive OSTs). looking over Amazon, a new copy of DoS is pretty pricey but used carts are going for more reasonable prices.

now before anyone rips my head off, I'm not saying they're the best games in the series. I just think they're a good introduction to the series. partly because I began with them and I still nostalgiagasm a little over them. :3

Only exception to not getting PSP releases of FF games: Tactics. It's been said before, but Tactics is the only Final Fantasy game that might actually be good. It is also crazy-hard.

My personal favorite is Final Fantasy VII, but it's not well-liked on this forum and I'm sure you're going to get a lot of responses saying to avoid it. Or, even worse, they'll tell you to play VIII. Ugh.

VI (released as III in America on the SNES) is probably your best bet. There are lots of ways to get your hands on it.

This. People can say it's hyped all they want, but I still think VII is the best. I... I thought it had a good plot. ;~;

Though VI would be a good one to start with, I'm going to suggest IX. It's actually not even one of my top three favourites, but... I can see how it would be a nice introduction to the series and there's not much wrong with it whereas nearly all of the other games have some major niggles in some way.

Taking it apart from the series, XII would be good to start with as well but because it took the series in quite a new direction it has a lot of hate put on it, and if you want to play the rest of the series XII isn't much like them.

tl;dr, get VII or IX first. VII if you're prepared to ignore both the hype and the hate and just take it as it is, because I genuinely do think that it's the best FF (and indeed one of the best games I've ever played); IX if you don't mind a more traditional RPG style.

Storywise, maybe, but who's saying the customization and battles suck? But is it hard? I always found Tactics to be piss-easy... Especially when you can easily create a party filled with one or two Ninja, a Calculator, six Summoners, and six more Mimes, then it gets easier than it already was.

Only get the PSP version of Tactics if you can stand massive amounts of slowdown though; the slowdown was terrible for me, so I didn;t like the PSP port, and the updated dialogue wasn't that impressive (Old, formal english does nothing for me, and some other people).

And like I said, do try out Chocobo's Dungeon 2, and Chocobo's Dungeon for the Wii. Dissidia's very good too; it's got some solid gameplay, and a very flexible CPU that you can mess around with for some interesting, or challenging matches if you don't have anybody to play it with.

Any RPG can be made easy (pretty much) when you have the optimal setup. But having played the entire franchise outside VIII (and yes, even XI), I can honestly say Tactics is one of the harder installments. TA(2) are obviously much easier.

EDIT: I forgot FFXIII exists. I haven't played it, not particularly interested in it.

Yeah, but a more comprehensible story does a *lot* for most people. It is really quite hard for me to go back to PS1 script. I do not particularly care for excessive Engrish when I play games and I like characters to have accurate names.

While I enjoy Chocobo's Dungeon and Dissidia very much, they are fanservice games and will probably bore people who are not fans of the series.

Optimal setups aside, I still fail to see what's so difficult about the original Tactics. It was already fairly piss easy :c sooo...

I guess the engrish and whatnot depends on the player. I'm at the point where engrish doesn't even bother me anymore, given how engrished I get when I'm figuring the story in a Tales game without any help. Although it never really bothered me to begin with. I know a number of people who are the same way.

Hmm! Thanks for the advice, guys. I'm beginning to lean towards VI, which looks strangely familiar in a nostalgia-inducing way, or possibly VII just for the sake of having played it.

Or maybe I'll just wait for the thirtieth installment and see what happens... *cough*
