• Welcome to The Cave of Dragonflies forums, where the smallest bugs live alongside the strongest dragons.

Guests are not able to post messages or even read certain areas of the forums. Now, that's boring, don't you think? Registration, on the other hand, is simple, completely free of charge, and does not require you to give out any personal information at all. As soon as you register, you can take part in some of the happy fun things at the forums such as posting messages, voting in polls, sending private messages to people and being told that this is where we drink tea and eat cod.

Of course I'm not forcing you to do anything if you don't want to, but seriously, what have you got to lose? Five seconds of your life?

Weird and Interesting Facts.

Re: Random Facts.

Fish cough.

And it takes about 2,893 licks to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop. :D

Re: Random Facts.

Wait, table salt? Like Morton's? Funny how I've been gargling with salt water for awhile and it hasn't exploded...

That's because the two elements (Sodium and chlorine) have combined and their properties have been changed.

Re: Random Facts.

I've got one! (Thank you QI!)

There is no such city called Bangkok anymore. It hasn't been called that in hundreds of years. Only ignorant tourists still call it Bangkok.

Bet you didn't know that then!

Re: Random Facts.

Despite what people say, the Germans were not responsible for winning the battle of Waterloo. It was the fact that the British would stand long enough for the Germans to arrive than meant they came at all. It was a joint victory.

Laughing/smiling when you're ill actually makes you healthier physically and emotionally.

No, it takes only 300, I tried it even. Oh and the salt thing, yeah I knew one wasn't poisonous, I just forgot what it did that was dangerous.

Re: Random Facts.

In Australia, hospitals reported four broken arms due to cracker pulling incidents.

Urban birds have developed a short, fast 'rap style' of singing, whilst rural ones haven't.

31 Australians have died since 1996 by watering their Christmas tree while their fairy lights were plugged in.

I don't know if they are absolutely true though o_O

Despite the fact that real 'Christmas trees' aren't actually native to Australia and are very rarely chopped down for christmas - nearly all christmas trees are plastic.
Other than that, I guess it could be true - due to all the people who get drunk as skunks at Christmas. xD

Anyway...
China uses 45 billion chopsticks per year. 25 million trees are chopped down to make 'em sticks.

Re: Random Facts.

Horses expend more energy sitting than they do standing.

So does that mean they sleep standing up?

Uh... yeah, they do. They have a special tendon in the back of their ankle (or 'hock,' if you want to be technical), which they lock when they go to sleep. If the tendon is cut, the horse can't sleep standing up and falls over. (I knew a horse who this happened to; she continued to try to sleep standing up and fell over every time. She eventually learned to lean against a wall to sleep.)

They sure do - if you see a horse standing, apparently doing nothing, it's probably asleep. They nap fairly often throughout the day. :3

They could have been drunk before realising it was a plastic tree with fairy lights xD I wish I could sleep standing up.

Re: Random Facts.

Scientists have recently discovered a white dwarf star made entirely out of diamond. It was 1 billion trillion trillion carets.

The oldest astronomical record is a 32,000-year-old piece of bone that shows the phases of the Moon.

It took Voyager 2 twelve years to reach Neptune.

Jupiter has more mass than all the other planets, moons, asteroids, and comets in the Solar System put together, but is only a hundreth of the mass of the smallest star.

Sound waves bounce around inside the Sun that are too low-frequency for humans to hear.

The ancient Chinese thought that solar eclipses happened when a dragon swallowed the Sun, so they made a lot of noise to get it to throw it back up.

On some asteroids the gravity is so weak that you could throw a baseball into orbit around it.

Galileo thought that Saturn had ears/handles.

Rain comes on an average of twice a century in the Atacama Desert, and in some places rain has never been recorded, making it the driest place on Earth.

Re: Random Facts.

Zagreus sits inside your head.
Zagreus lives among the dead.
Zagreus sees you in your bed,
and eats you whilst you're sleeping.

Zagreus was one of the sons of Zeus and was a spirit of phantoms.

I have nightmares about that poem.
