Ground Zero Mosque

I still go by, "let them build it" it's their way of mourning and trying to set things right. I'm not even going to touch the Nazi conversation.
 
I am not saying them personally. Ever since 9/11 people have targeted them with a cruel hatred that was never truly deserved. Not allowing them to build a place of worship is against their rights. True I have no religion myself, but I refuse to hate someone because of their religion. I can say I dislike some of their beliefs, but that doesn't mean I should hate someone as a person. Have many of you ever been to Ground Zero? There is a porn shop and a strip club across the street. And you oppose a Mosque from being built two blocks away? How is that any sort of honor to the memory of those lost?
 
Well, the difference between a porn shop and a mosque is that pornographers didn't crash into the WTC. Just sayin'.

And extremists that don't represent the vast majority of the Islam faith crashed into the WTC, not your every-day Muslims. Just sayin'.

And NYC Muslims did not crash into the WTC, it was a bunch of extremists. Just sayin'.

Also hey did you know there's already a mosque ~4 blocks away from Ground Zero? It was up since before 9/11 happened and I don't see anyone screaming for it to be torn down because it's in "bad taste". Also, it's apparently not a mosque, but a Muslim cultural center. Not sure what the difference is, but I don't particularly care either.

And how far away would the place have to be from Ground Zero before you're comfortable with its location? Three NYC blocks? Four? Five? 10? Entirely different city? Ban 'em from the country? I just want an idea of what you think is reasonable here.

I think a good five or six blocks would be sufficient. Also, it shouldn't have 9/11 rebuilding project written all over it.

Second question: Why "five or six"? Never mind that it's a huge city and it's not exactly easy to find a place to build a cultural center, why must it be "five or six" blocks? Why is two insufficient, but five good?

How does it "have 9/11 rebuilding project written all over it"? And god help you if you say "because Fox News told me Hamas is funding it lolol".
 
Because good sir, it's demolishing a building ruined by shrapnel during 9/11 to build this, which the project itself calls a rebuilding project.

Secondly, 5 or 6 because that's far enough not to have been damaged during 9/11.
 
Ah, but surely the whole world was damaged by 9/11? Including the Muslim world? How much racism and prejudice have innocent Muslims had to endure for the actions of a few extremists? People of all faiths and cultures were lost in the bombing of the Twin Towers, but the wider effect was that many innocent Muslims were persecuted by the now-paranoid nations of the world.

The whole world was damaged by 9/11 and I wouldn't deny anyone the right to build on or near Ground Zero. The Muslim community of New York are guilty of no crime. Stop treating them as if they are.

Two blocks should be far enough too, shouldn't it? Ground zero was the area that was damaged, wasn't it?... So even one block would be far enough? Am I misunderstanding what ground zero is supposed to be? Please correct me if I'm wrong. I figured ground zero referred to the damage... on the ground... so any-blocks-away is not on the damage?

I'm still firmly convinced if you people just read the words "mosque" and "ground zero" in the same sentence it would bother you, and if it were five or six instead of two you'd be saying you want ten or eleven blocks. It's not being built by the same people who did 9/11, and it's not for the same people who did 9/11, so why does it matter? If it were Christian extremists who did it and a church was going up two blocks away from the damage I'm also willing to bet nobody would care.
 
I would care, I would still speak out. IDC if I'm a Christian, I would decry the extremists, but I would recognize that building a church would not be the right sentiment and not do it. Also, I just said that the building site this is in was damaged by shrapnel from the WtC.

I think this should be enough. :P I do support it though, if we oppose this, what happens to freedom of religion? I'm Christian, but I don't really care what other people believe as long as they aren't forcing it on me. So I support it.

Your brother is quite ill-informed. How old is he? I pray sub-ten. Even so, I weep for this country.

"Supporting" and "Not Really Caring" are two different things...
 
My brother is 14, but yes, he is very ill-informed. He pretty much hears all the political stuff from our dad and then twists it. It's quite sad.
 
A rather excellent friend of a friend said this:

"Since the 9/11 hijackers were all men, maybe the area around the WTC site should be a man-free zone. Lesbian commune in lower Manhattan!"
