• Welcome to The Cave of Dragonflies forums, where the smallest bugs live alongside the strongest dragons.

Guests are not able to post messages or even read certain areas of the forums. Now, that's boring, don't you think? Registration, on the other hand, is simple, completely free of charge, and does not require you to give out any personal information at all. As soon as you register, you can take part in some of the happy fun things at the forums such as posting messages, voting in polls, sending private messages to people and being told that this is where we drink tea and eat cod.

Of course I'm not forcing you to do anything if you don't want to, but seriously, what have you got to lose? Five seconds of your life?

Religion and Lack of Religion

Well, on a similar way, Russia. There haven't been that many radical communist states, but if there were more, I'm sure i would have more examples.
While I agree that there was religious persecution in Communist Russia (it waned as time went on obv), I presume you meant the USSR as whole? I'm being pedantic here but when talking about the USSR it's a bad move to call all of it 'Russia' because the USSR was made up of many, many countries and states and those countries and states take very badly to being called Russia.
Just a useful thing to remember in the future :o the USSR was enormous and countries like the Ukraine, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Georgia etc had it just as bad, and oftentimes worse than Russia.

Of course it's depressing to remember that modern-day Russia has an overall worse quality of life than it did when it was part of the USSR but that's another thing.

Alright! I can take the corruption of children's minds, even the making people pay about $314 + travel fees, but don't mess with Potter!

And making the kids feel bad, that' not even CLOSE to being okay. I'm kind of a Christian, but too much is too much.
(Just in case it's not obvious, I'm being sarcastic about Potter over kids.)

How are you kind of a Christian? I mean, as far as I know, you either accept Jesus Christ as your saviour or you don't

Maybe he believes in Jesus, but doesn't agree with the Church's positions on anything? That's how I interpret the statement, at least.

EDIT: Or maybe he isn't a serious Christian?

Being a member of the Church =/= being a Christian. He doesn't have to take religion uber seriously to be one. It's just you cannot half be a Christian

The "Jesus Camp" documentary is one of the most disturbing things I've ever laid my eyes upon. This is like the ultimate brainwashing and I absolutely hate it.

It's fun. My parents are both members of the Catholic church but they have zero religion in their brains, while I know a fair amount of Christians who do not go to church regularly

My grandma's just like that! She hasn't got a scrap of religious belief in her, but she goes to church every weekend. It's a nice way for older people to get out and about and socialise (in fact, she jokes that she 'converted' from Catholicism to Protestantism because the Protestants do better day trips). I could rag on at her about institutional corruption and the arguments against belief, but why should I spoil her fun?

My uncle is a completely different kettle of fish, though. After lapsing for thirty years, he suddenly regained his Catholic faith. He's currently married to a lapsed Muslim. We're all quite bemused by it, since he's far from socially conservative and lives a rather bohemian lifestyle. Oh well, whatever floats peoples boats.

Please don't even remind me of Jesus Camp. The mere existance of that and similar projects is competely and totally wrong, regardless of whether God or another deity exists. All people should have the right to believe what they want, without any sort of indoctrination. The radical things done by Ms. Fisher to and with those children are unnacceptable - you don't have children (possibly unwilling children, I might add) participate in anti-abortion and pro-religious pickets.

Okay, two cents.

First off, the video is disgusting. Second, religion is supposed to be a path of life, where you follow a moral ethic that is taught through stories and parables, and in Christianity's case, a role model in which to follow.

SO. I don't care what your religion is. I don't give a damn whether you attend a church or a mosque or any other place of worship. I don't even care if you worship the God of War. All I care about is that you give your kids a choice. Baptize them, go ahead. But let them choose if they want to go to church. If they want to be confirmed. If they want to take any oath.

And for fuck's sake don't lecture people who don't want to listen. Please.

not necessarily true, plenty religions don't need a book
