ASB Halloween Mafia 2009

They swore it would never happen again. The celebrations were moved outside of ASB Central, the actual location not announced until the day of the event itself. Security aggron circulated through the crowd and teams of psychic pokémon kept watch from the outskirts, constantly scanning the mass of trainers for any sign of those who might be harboring malicious thoughts. Bags were searched and trainers required to remove their costumes while going through security so that no Mafia member could slip in undetected in the guise of a pichu. The most powerful trainers of the league were put on call to crush any trouble that might arise. There was no possible way for anything to go wrong--until, of course, it did.

The festival had been set up near the Beach Outpost on Asber's southern shore, bonfires dotting the sand and strands of orange Christmas lights stretched between tall posts marking out the perimeter of the festivities (a perimeter enforced by a fearsome array of guard-pokémon). The smell of food and the sound of chatter filled the air as trainers milled about on the sand, all decked out in costume and some even accompanied by their dressed-up pokémon. As the night wore on without any apparent murders, the underlying tension that had tinged the festival's opening with apprehension began to relax.

Those who took heart were much too optimistic. The fearow that dropped screaming from the sky, apparently unharmed but with one very deceased trainer on its back, was only the beginning of the trouble. Within minutes, the happy crowd of revelers was transformed into a panicked mob, pelting for the perimeter of the beach, only to find that something had gone terribly wrong with the pokémon designated to guard the gathering. With a strange, feral light in their eyes, they paced just outside the ring of light, and fell upon any who escaped, tearing them apart with unnatural fury. Even their own trainers, trying to calm them down and find out what was wrong, met gruesome fates at the claws of their own companions. People started to get the message after a desperate trainer attempted to escape by air, only to be fatally informed that the aerial sentries were still on duty.

At last a shivering, horrified mass of trainers gathered near the middle of the beach, staring out into the dark as though expecting another attack any second. What had happened? How had someone managed to initiate this attack, and what were their intentions? Closer inspection of the night's first casualty, who was pincussioned with poison stings, had a scrap of paper pinned to him by the same vicious spines that had killed him. Those who recognized the symbol of the ASB Mafia on it felt their blood run cold, and their hearts only sank lower as they read what was scrawled below in an angular hand.

Let's play a game...

The trainers of ASB knew what would come next: day after day of anxiety and nights of pure terror as the Mafia worked their way through the innocents one by one. With nowhere to run and no way to tell friend from foe thanks to the trainers' elaborate costumes, there was only one totally logical and non-extremist solution. Once per day, they would convene and decide, by vote, one amongst their number to kill. In this way they hoped to eliminate the evil members circulating in their midst. Even better, the league decided to offer a prize to those who could survive the ordeal--a rare candy, the most exotic and coveted of trick-or-treat fodder.

The Basics
(This and other large portions of this post and the next were created by Butterfree)

This is a game based on the game Mafia or Werewolf with an ASB theme to it. To quote Wikipedia, it is a clash between the informed minority, the mafia, and the uninformed majority, the citizens or innocents. Each person in the game has a randomly assigned role which may permit the person to do something special during either of the game's two phases, day and night.

This will all become clearer as you read on.

The Mafia

Animorph - The mastermind of last year's Mafia, Animorph returns to torment the trainers of ASB once more. No longer posing as Kusarigamaitachi, he delights in killing in creative or unusual ways, trying to make a statement with each death as much as anything else. Last year, the innocents were powerless to stop his reign of terror--and he intends to enjoy another year of unopposed slaughter this Halloween.

Chiropter - Animorph's second-in-command returns, eager for the chance to toy with the trainers of ASB once more and secretly harboring the hope of replacing his superior should Animorph come to an... unfortunate end. So long as Animorph is alive he won't actively participate in the killings, though.

Kratos Aurion - Deeply embittered by the fact that he always dies first, Kratos has decided to switch to the winning side, and screw all those lynch-happy "innocent" trainers. Shouldering his way up out of the ranks of the mafia-wannabes, Kratos is finally on the team--but still only third-in-command, meaning that he doesn't get to do any actual murdering until his two superiors are killed off.

rock-ground - rock-ground's been demoted this time, and can only fume about the loss of his position and despise the innocents in secret. None of the Mafia knows who he is, nor does he know their true identities, and he doesn't participate in their discussions. Instead, he hangs out on the sidelines, quietly cheering them on. If the mafia manage to kill every innocent member, he also wins. If, however, he is pressed, he's ready to throw his life away to at least take someone else out before being killed and can choose to do so if the other members vote to kill him during the day. Before they can carry out the sentence, he will run up to any other member and blow himself up, killing himself but also taking out the member of his choice. If Jack_the_PumpkinKing checks his IP, he won't realize his true alignment and will consider him innocent.

The Innocents

Jack_the_PumpkinKing - The last elite referee who hasn't joined the side of evil or vanished from Asber, Jack_the_PumpkinKing is the only wielder of the upper eschelon's most potent weapon: the IP search. He is capable of using his referee powers to run an IP check on any member he chooses, which enables him to identify whether or not the target is a mafia member. Unfortunately, because the IP search function is ridiculously slow, he may only use this ability once per night.

Prettzel - A referee apprenticed to Chiropter before the Elite turned to the dark side, Prettzel has learned to extend his referee powers to prevent loss of life by casting Wish on a member of his choice once per night. If that member would be killed through any means that night, they will not die. However, if Prettzel and L'il Dwagie both choose to target the same member using Wish, the clash of their powers will destroy that member instead of saving them.

L'il Dwagie - Trained beneath the vanished referee Keta, L'il Dwagie has learned to extend her referee powers to prevent loss of life by casting Wish on a member of her choice once per night. If that member would be killed through any means during the night, they will not die. However, if L'il Dwagie and Prettzel both choose to target the same member using Wish, the clash of their powers will destroy that member instead of saving them.

Full Metal Cookies - moon-panther's rival. The two are close friends and are always battling one another to grow stronger. If moon-panther is killed and Full Metal Cookies is still alive, she will go mad with grief and use her next night action to hunt down and kill the member she most suspects to be responsible. Full Metal Cookies knows who moon-panther is, but the two cannot communicate.

moon-panther - Full Metal Cookie's rival. The two are close friends and are always battling one another to grow stronger. If Full Metal Cookies is killed and moon-panther is still alive, she will go mad with grief and track down one of the members she suspects to be mafia and kill them out of revenge. moon-panther knows who Full Metal Cookies is, but the two cannot communicate.

Kindling Queen - Kindling Queen is determined not to go down without a fight. Using her referee powers, she can cast destiny bond on herself once per night, such that if she is killed by vote in the following day, she will drag one member of her choice to the grave with her.

Grass King - A long-time member and common contest participant, Grass King is well known and easy to recognize. Using his reputation to his advantage, Grass King can attract the attention of any one of the other ASB members, causing them to ignore their initial target and use their powers against him instead. Grass King is told all attacks that target him, but not whether they came from the member he distracted or someone else entirely. If he distracts Chiropter or Kratos Aurion before Animorph has been killed, he will not die, as only the leader of the mafia is responsible for the group's killings.

Normal Members - Of course, a variety of normal members also populate the ASB forum and are just as mired in the conflict as anyone else. They may not have any special powers to lend to the fight against the mafia, but it is up to them to use their numerical advantage and voting powers to find the traitors in their midst.

Variable Alignment

Dragon or blazheirio889 - Advanced referees eager to prove themselves and rise through the ranks of ASB's finest. At this point, they have not yet specialized in one of the higher referee powers, but retain the full complement of those open to beginners. Their path to greatness is not yet known: will they choose to fight valiantly by the sides of their innocent referee comrades or work against them in secret, intent on a quick promotion with the coming of ASB's new ruling order? During the first night, Dragon and blazheirio889 can choose to activate one of their referee powers and choose either the innocents or the mafia to side with. After that they will function exactly like their chosen role and alignment. If Dragon or blazheirio889 chooses to align with the mafia, he or she is informed of who the mafia members are and they of who he or she is, but not until the end of the first night. When killed, Dragon and blazheirio889 appear to be innocent no matter what their true alignment was.

Randomizer - If Dragon or blazheirio889 selects this power, one night during the course of the game they may choose to use Randomizer. This power will cause the targets of all night actions to be randomized to anything not the user's chosen target. When the trainers wake up, they will see the image of a die graven in the sand and realize that their targets were scrambled, but they will not know who they really targeted. Night actions without a specific target will go through as normal.

Terrain Effect - If Dragon or blazheirio889 selects this power, every night, he or she chooses a player be struck by a random Thunder Wave, as per the Beach Outpost's terrain description, causing the target to become paralyzed. That player's night action, if any, will then not happen. If Dragon or blazheirio889 choose nothing, they will simply not perform a night action.

DQ - If Dragon or blazheirio889 selects this power, one night during the course of the game they may choose to end the night early at whatever point they choose during the Midnight stage. Any night actions that happen after this point (see the order of night actions below; this is not a question of when the night actions are sent in) will be skipped, and instead the dead are simply rounded up and the next day starts.

Target Determination - If Dragon or blazheirio889 selects this power, every night, they pick a player to use Psych Up on. Instead of being targeted by whatever targeted them that night (excluding Jack_the_PumpkinKing’s IP check and Grass King's distraction), they will be targeted by whatever was used on the player they targeted during that night. If Dragon or blazheirio889 choose nothing, they will simply not perform a night action.

Direct Healing - If Dragon or blazheirio889 selects this power, every night they may choose use Moonlight. This protects them from nighttime assaults of any kind - and better yet, it does not clash with the healers' Wishes if they are used on them. However, if they use Moonlight any one night, they can not use it again the next night, and they are of course always vulnerable to execution during the day. If Dragon or blazheirio889 choose nothing, they will simply not perform a night action.

Terrain Effect 2 - If Dragon or blazheirio889 selects this power, every night they may choose a player to be struck by a random Grasswhistle, as per the Beach Outpost terrain description. That player will then sleep through the next day and be unable to participate in discussion and voting. That a player is sleeping through the day will be noted in the morning. If Dragon or blazheirio889 choose nothing, they will simply not perform a night action.

Vanished - If Dragon or blazheirio889 selects this power, they drop out of sight entirely, flying beneath the radar and leaving confused, bereft battlers in this wake. While in this stealth form, they are very difficult to see during the night. If any lethal attack targets them, it has a 50% chance of missing them altogether.

The Alien

MurrMurr - Not much is known about this mysterious referee, save for his fondness for his Gabite, Purr. His referee powers are sufficient to protect him from even the most deadly of Mafia assassinations, but when threatened MurrMurr's dark side begins to show. After an attempt on his life is made, he will become increasingly paranoid and turning his innate protection into a weapon, ready to be released at the first sign of danger. If it is voted that he be killed while in this state, he will instead snap and unleash his gathered strength upon all of ASB, tearing apart villager and Mafia alike in a blaze of energy. In such an instance, he wins, and this is the only way that he can win. If it is voted that he be killed or if he is killed by another means before an attack by the Mafia causes him to transform, he still loses as usual. If the mafia attack him again after his transformation, or if he is killed by some means other than the vote at this time, he again dies as normal. After his transformation, Jack_the_PumpkinKing will identify him as mafia, and he will be posthumously identified as Mafia if he somehow dies in this state.

The Game

This is a game of Mafia like any other, except that the roles are based upon forum members rather than pokémon or HP characters or whatever. Sign-ups will take place in this thread and are open until Friday, October 16th. Currently, I plan to take all members who sign up, adding more mafia members if necessary, but if it gets really crazy I'll cut signups off before Wednesday. Once sign-ups are over, this thread will be locked and a new one shortly created for discussion and the actual progression of the game.

If you have played this form of Mafia in the past, I have stuck all the rules in the next post so that you can conveniently ignore them. If, however, you've never played before, please read them carefully and make sure that you understand them. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask them. Also, I'll do my best not to make this year's game drag on forever and suck as much as it did last time!

The Game

When a game is about to start, the Game Master will use any random generator to assign each role randomly to one player (although if there are more players than roles, the rest can all be normal members or variable-alignment roles can be added), letting it be known in advance which roles will be used. Note that although the roles are named after members of the ASB, you WILL NOT be the role corresponding to your name, most likely. If the RNG wants to give it to you, whatever. Please try not to confuse actual players with the roles; if Animorph chooses to participate, he is not necessarily evil.

After each player has received a role, the game will start and the first night phase, which lasts 48 hours, will begin. The Game Master PM's each participant with their role and the deadline for sending in night actions.

The Night Phase

During this phase of the game, each player with a night action will send the Game Master a PM containing the username of the player they wish to use their night action on (their REAL username, not the username of the role you want to try and eliminate!) or, if it is an action with no specific target, whether they will use it or not, at any point before the deadline.

If a player (other than Animorph if Chiropter is alive) foresees not being able to send in a night action, he or she may PM the Game Master beforehand with an advance choice. The advance choice may use conditionals, but only concerning things that would be public to the player if he were active during that night, e.g. "I will heal X if Y claims to be Kratos in the thread," but not something like, "I will heal X if X is not Mafia," because that is something the player would not know.

When the deadline comes along, the Game Master will randomly generate any night actions he has not received so that a Mafia attack will target any non-Mafia player and all other attacks will target any player excluding the user, and then execute the night actions in the following order (eliminating, of course, any steps pertaining to players not currently in the game):

Evening (These are night actions in which the player must choose something in advance which may affect things that happen afterwards.)
1) First night only: Dragon and blazheirio889 inform the Game Master of their chosen power and alignment. This is their only night action for the first night, but on all successive nights, they will have the night action associated with the power they chose. Dragon and blazheirio889 immediately become endowed with their chosen power and are considered to have their chosen alignment, however.
2) Grass King chooses a player to distract if he has not done so already.
3) Dragon or blazheirio889 in DQ mode choose whether to end the night early and, if they do, when in the night it should be used, by specifying any one of the Midnight steps to end the night immediately after. They may also choose to terminate it at the beginning of the Midnight. For example, they may choose to end the night after step one of the Midnight, which will cause the Game Master to skip right to Dawnbreak after Midnight step one so that the Mafia will have acted, but the healers will not have gotten the chance to do so. They need only PM the Game Master if they do wish to use DQ; the default is not to use it.
4) Dragon or blazheirio889 in Terrain Effect mode choose a player to use Thunder Wave on. If that player has a night action executed after this point, it will be ignored.
5) Dragon or blazheirio889 in Randomizer mode choose whether to use their power or not and need only PM the Game Master if they do wish to do it, as by default they will not. If this is done, all succeeding night actions will be randomized to pick any target excluding the user and the user's actual chosen target.

Midnight (These steps determine who will die in this night.)
1) The Mafia picks a player to kill. If Animorph is distracted by Grass King, or if Animorph is dead and the appropriate acting Mafia is targeted by Grass King’s distraction, the killing will be redirected upon Grass King, but the Mafia will not be informed of this. The player killed is put on the Death Queue.
2) Prettzel and L'il Dwagie each choose the player they wish to heal. If either of them is targeted by Grass King’s distraction, his/her Wish will be redirected upon Grass King, but s/he will not be notified. If one of them is on the Death Queue, s/he will not use his/her healing. If a player on the Death Queue is targeted with Wish, he or she is now removed from the Death Queue. If a player not on the Death Queue is targeted with two Wishes, he or she will be put on the Death Queue. If the target is blazheirio889 or Dragon in Vanished mode, flip a coin and add either to the Death Queue only if it shows tails.
3) If MurrMurr is in his normal form, is on the Death Queue at this point and was targeted to kill, he will now become his enraged form and be removed from the Death Queue.
4) Full Metal Cookies and moon-panther each choose the player they wish to target if the other is currently on the Death Queue or was killed the previous day. They do not know whether the other is on the Death Queue, so this action is ignored if the other is not dead the previous day or on the Death Queue. Full Metal Cookies and moon-panther also cannot retaliate if they themselves are on the Death Queue. If Full Metal Cookies or moon-panther is targeted by Grass King’s distraction, and the other one is dead the previous day or on the Death Queue, their attack will be redirected upon Grass King instead and Full Metal Cookies and moon-panther will not be informed of the change. If Full Metal Cookies or moon-panther successfully targets a normal form MurrMurr, MurrMurr will now become his monster form. If the target is Dragon or blazheirio889 in Vanished mode, flip a coin and add either to the Death Queue only if it shows tails.
5) Dragon and blazheirio889 in Target Determination Mode choose a player to use Psych Up on. Whatever attacks may have targeted that player in the night so far will also target Dragon or blazheirio889, and whatever attacks may have originally targeted them (except for Grass King’s distraction) will be ignored.
6) Dragon or blazheirio889 in Direct Healing mode choose whether to use Moonlight. If they do and are on the Death Queue, they are now taken off it, but may not use Moonlight again the next night.

Twilight (These night actions prepare for the day.)
1) Kindling Queen picks a player to use Destiny Bond on. If Kindling Queen is executed the following day, the player she used Destiny Bond will die as well.
2) Dragon or blazheirio889 in Terrain Effect 2 mode choose a player to use Grasswhistle on. During the following day phase, that player will be asleep and unable to participate in discussion.
3) Jack_the_PumpkinKing chooses a living player that he wishes to use IP Check on. The Game Master PM's him with the current alignment of said player in accordance with the role descriptions, even if that player or Jack_the_PumpkinKing himself is on the Death Queue. If Jack_the_PumpkinKing was targeted with Grass King's distraction this night, Jack_the_PumpkinKing will inspect Grass King instead but will not be notified of the change.

Dawnbreak (Finally, the Game Master PM's some users with necessary information and cleans up the night.)
1) If MurrMurr has become his enraged form, the Game Master should now PM him to notify him of this.
2) The Game Master PM's Grass King with the name of each attack that he was targeted with in the night, without specifying which player used what, even if Grass King is on the Death Queue.
3) All players on the Death Queue will now die, in the order the Death Queue specifies. If all the remaining players are on the Death Queue, the winner will be declared as if the last person on the Death Queue had not died at all.
4) If Dragon or blazheirio889 are alive and have joined the Mafia, they are now PMed with the names of Animorph, Chiropter, and Kratos Aurion and the latter informed who the new recruits are.

After this process has gone through, the Game Master will post a new Mafia thread. In this thread, the Game Master will explain who died in the night, if anyone, and specify what the body that the remaining members see is - is it Animorph, Chiropter, or Kratos Aurion, or is it an ordinary player (any innocent, rock-ground, or MurrMurr)? She will also name a day deadline, 48 hours from when the thread is started.

The Day Phase

During the day phase, all living players will be able to post in the Mafia topic and discuss who should be executed until that deadline comes. During this process, players should nominate the names of other players for execution, indicating this clearly by bolding the name of the player they intend to nominate. The nominated player may protest and defend him or herself. Players may lie about their identity as they please, although they may not copy and paste, screenshot or otherwise try to affirm the content of any PM they received from the Game Master. If a player who has nominated eventually becomes convinced that the player he nominated should not be killed, he or she may change his mind by saying, in bold, "I withdraw my nomination" (and may then, if he or she pleases, proceed to nominate another player). If you agree with a nomination that has already been posted, however, it is not necessary to renominate the same person unless you wish to reiterate it in case the other person withdraws theirs before you get the chance to repost it.

If rock-ground wants to, he may post at any point during the day post, "I will use Explosion on [Player name]" in bold in the thread. Only rock-ground may do this, and any player who is not rock-ground and posts this will be immediately disqualified from the game. As soon as rock-ground has posted this, he is officially dead, as well as the player he killed, and neither of them may post in the thread or communicate with living players at all from this point. When the Game Master sees this he will post in the thread to update about this and effectively restart the day by extending the nomination deadline. Any player may, of course, lie that he is rock-ground or threaten to kill someone, but he or she may not post "I use Explosion on [Player name]."

When the nomination deadline comes along, the Game Master will post a poll with the names of the nominees, and each player can pick one (and ONLY one) of the nominees. You cannot change your vote. In the case of a tie, only the nominees involved in the tie will be allowed to be picked, and the tiebreaker will repeat as often as necessary until a clear winner is decided.

When the person with the most votes has been determined, the Game Master will post, announce the person who has been executed, and show their alignment as with those murdered in the night. If the player who is executed was Kindling Queen, the player she used Destiny Bond on the previous night will now also die. Their alignments are of course also shown.

The Game Master will then announce the next night phase and the deadline for submitting night actions and close the Day Discussion thread, and the cycle repeats itself until a winner is found. The game ends whenever:

- there are only Mafia left alive (rock-ground included), in which case the Mafia wins.
- there are only Innocents (and possibly rock-ground) left alive, in which case the Innocents win (rock-ground loses, however).
- MurrMurr is the only player left alive, in which case everyone loses.
- MurrMurr, while in his monster form, is voted to be executed, in which case he wins.

When a player is dead and not the last one to die, he may ask the Game Master about who holds what role. It is, however, strictly forbidden for dead players to communicate with living players in any way, and for living players to communicate about the game elsewhere than in the game thread unless their roles are specifically denoted as being allowed to speak (does not apply to this game variant). However, living players may PM the Game Master with a message to be posted anonymously. If this PM is received during a day phase, it will be posted immediately; if it is received during a night phase, it will be posted the following in-game day.

First of all: love the new role descriptions. :D

Sign-ups will take place in this thread and are open until Wednesday, October 7th. Currently, I plan to take all members who sign up, adding more mafia members if necessary, but if it gets really crazy I'll cut signups off before Wednesday.

That's a rather strict deadline, don't you think? Also, in your description of FMC/moony's midnight phase:

If the target is Walker or Light Mightyena in Vanished mode, flip a coin and add either to the Death Queue only if it shows tails.
That confused me for a second.

Aaaanyway, I'm currently weighing my love of the game against the fact that I can guarantee the Mafia will kill me on the first night (the role description, it speaks the truth) and so don't know whether or not I'm definitely playing yet; really just wanted to clarify the deadline.

That's a rather strict deadline, don't you think?
So I guess you get an idea of how long ago I started working on this. -_-;

Sign-ups close this Friday, and I fixed that other thing, too.

ZORA ALSO DEMANDS TO BE SIGNED UP.
...Provided you remember that I have an ASB account, and I can prove that I do even if I rarely use it! [/nervous]

Hey cool I gets a role this time

Sign me up! (hopefully this time I won't be the only one on my side to die)
